Uh, no - he retired as a Commander, I retried as a Captain.
Let's stick to the OPs original query and discussion. Best.

Corporations are NEVER your friend. You are a DRONE who occupies a space that performs a function, that they can fill tomorrow if need be with another body who may or may not be as competent as you are. It does not matter to them, the space is filled. You are expendable.
The question is for what purpose do you get up in the morning, put your work suit on and head out the door? Every one of you would come up with a different variation as an answer. After listening to you folks etall for YEARS, none of it would have the clarity to distill the synthesis of purpose down into a simple sentence or two. Almost everyone would have a kernel of truth to it but none of you as evidenced in this Thread could boil it down. The answer is that you go to work for your self. You are trading time and labour for a paycheck that feeds you. You do not live in the Garden of Eden, you have to labour to make your daily bread. You owe the company nothing and they owe you nothing (Corps do not love you). Given that you can pick and chose what you want to do with them. YOU HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF FIRST AND FOREMOST, and you have to be smart about it to...CYA. Always CYA... Your happiness and well being is incumbent upon you. While a number of people are smart enough to know that they should take care of their body you also have to take care of your emotional well being (it is as important if not more so). Sometimes you need some help or advice in solving a problem or dilemma. Family and friends have traditionally been relied upon to serve in that function, but they have subjective feelings because they are emotionally attached to you for better or worse. In that a professional who does not have that subjective baggage can act as the mirror on the wall and be your guide. The object of the game is to gain clarity so that you can purposefully navigate the shoals of life. If you do not have clarity you waste a lot of time floundering around trying to figure out what the fk is going on here, and are prone to making a lot of mistakes as your perceptions maybe faulty and time is slipping by. Hundreds of millions of people have died in wars that were started by people who have had faulty perceptions. Hundreds of millions will die in the future. The state of human clarity is pretty dismal. Every thing involves some kind of stress, some jobs more some less...and compensation has nothing to do with it. You need successful coping mechanisms which the family unit instills in people for better or worse . The more clarity the more you are able to roll with the punches. You have an understanding of the ground your are engaged upon and whom with. Then you can move with the purpose that serves your needs the best. Capiche That will be $200.

+ another for exercise being a great reliever of stress, even in small/moderate levels.
Also its not really rocket surgery: If your job sucks (for you) find one that doesn't. Life is too short as they say

I've heard an addiction is often used as a coping mechanism ......
Of course I'm kidding. Why make a bad thing worse. |

Then your little Hamster wheel must be constantly spinning. We might call this the fatigue principle for handling stress. You need coping mechanism to handle various stress loads. A person can handle enormous stress if they know how to handle the load.

Going through life drunk or stoned is no way to live your life son. Or doped up on meds either one might add.

As others have said, GTFO. I was working at a place a few years ago that left me coming home stressed to the max and boiling with anger most days. It was to the point that rage was following me home. Finally said screw it and bailed to a job that I wasn’t thrilled about but knew I’d be able to do with minimal thought at a place I’d be happier.
2 years later I’ve gotten promoted twice, and am making more money than I ever have, and have a boss that gives no f**ks in the best way possible. What’s more important? A job you hate and are going to give yourself an annuerysm over, or having a good home life and living long enough to enjoy retirement? What field are you in OP? We may have some contacts on the board to help you find something else. |

Other than that it was all good for 30 years. As for vacations, every vacation for 30 years was a business trip - at least part of it was. ![]()

Not exactly.
My corporation is my best friend. Of course for 30 years I was the sole stock holder and best-paid, most admired, and most cherished employee. ![]() I'll keep my $200 thank you. That will be $500 for correcting your mistake.

There are also a lot of silly things that add to stress in big companies where people are always trying to one-up each other. The CEO at one of my employers reportedly only slept 3 hours a night. Suddenly all of the other execs, including my boss, decided they should only sleep 3 hours a night. You never saw so many cranky sleep-deprived ass-draggers around that place.
Same thing for weekend work, where some of my co-workers would show up every Saturday, do nothing for 5 hours, then go home, just to put in the appearance. Then I'd hear about it Monday, after I came back from a weekend at the track. You can opt out of such this silliness and save yourself a lot of stress. |

Excellent idea!
I did a 1000 mile drive yesterday with the family and dog, gives you plenty of thinking time and when I looked in the rear view mirror everything at home looked a long way behind me.

My suggestion: Snap out of it! If you hate your job, then get a new one and stop complaining. |
