Which 911 to sell (1st world problem)

Sell both, buy a sorted 996, enjoy the experience, and pat yourself on the back for making a great financial decision while still benefiting from having a fun ride in the garage.

...but if you keep one, I would choose the 993. I think the 993 is more user friendly as a date night car, a road trip car, and for growing horns getting on it while weaving through a curvy road. The old 911 is charming but...old.

A friend of mine suggested I keep both 911s but swap out my daily for something with 4WD/AWD which many say I’ll want in Colorado anyway. Ive thought of that (a small SUV perhaps) but the thought of driving something everyday without a manual trans doesn’t sit well. I hate automatics.

It seems more of you lean towards selling the 993 vs the 3.2 911.

Yeah, but who cares? Why sell the car you drive and keep the one you don't? What's the point? Might as well sell both and get something you'll actually drive.

If you only drive the '84 every 6 weeks,
you haven't really owned the '84 in many years.

It impacts your life zero or even negatively.
Odds are, you will never miss it.

Get rid of it, and your quality of life improves.
Less clutter, less headache.

I do enjoy the ‘84, it’s a nice car, and better looking. Selling the 993 would net me an extra $15K vs the ‘84. The ‘84 is also cheaper to maintain. There’s pros and cons for keeping either one. Deschodt and finstone make very goods about simplifying as well. One of them needs to go but probably not both. I know I’d miss having an old air cooled Porsche.

I have no dog in this fight, but the fact that you never drive the Carrera doesn’t bode well. Particularly considering your comments about ease of driving and comfort. If you CHOOSE to drive one car and have to force yourself to drive the other for maintenance pusposes, I think you should ignore what has been posted here and go with your heart. If money is the motivation then I have a feeling that selling both and buying a later model Porsche might be a great option. You’d yield a car with greater comfort, practicality, and fun, but for way less money than the 993. I love air cooled 911s but wouldn’t describe the average Carrera as comfortable or easy to drive.

My first thought when I read the post was the ‘84 for sure. But then I realized if I didn’t have a modern Porsche I’d hardly drive one at all. So I still think the ‘84 because I think it will age better but go ahead and do the A/C and other things that make it enjoyable to drive in all situations.

When I think about comfort and ease of driving, I think about my wife. She loved all of my newer water cooled Porsches, frequently using my various 9X6 and 9X7 cars over the years to run kids around and get groceries. She also drove my air cooled cars.....once. G50 Carrera, SC with a Rennshift, 911T with a fresh 901, all great cars that were pretty easy to drive by the standards of old 911s, all cars that she felt were hard to drive. She enjoyed RIDING in each, but driving.....not so much.

Keep the 84 for weekend fun, sell the 993, replace it with a well sorted 996 C4 or C4
S for a daily driver to get your AWD or if you don't want to DD a Porsche, get a WRX or STI as a fun DD.

sell both and get a 996/997 Turbo. You get the performance in spades. You get the comfort - makes you forget all about the aircooled nonsense - still get the Metzger engine... just saying

Sell both. Take the $75K you'd net and spend $45K on a super nice 996 Turbo with a manual transmission and recent clutch. That 996TT will rock your world.

...Then, put $25K in the bank and use the extra $5K to take your wife on an extravagant romantic weekend someplace.

You’ll spend closer to 55 for a super nice 996 - unless you don’t care about miles. They are great fun though. Especially with a chip.

Nah...BAT is the definitive market valuation tool right now. They sell a couple 996 turbos a week and usually nice cars for top $$ w tons of bidders.

Here is a nice 56k mile 6-speed that gaveled @ $43k this month:

So $45k, or less, buys a nice 996 turbo. Deduct $10k if you want a tiptronic. Well maintained w around 100k miles is the sweet spot, IMO, because they run for hundreds of thousands of miles like a Toyota truck. Those are in the $30s in beautiful condition.

$50k buys a nice 997tt 6-speed coupe w 80k miles.

On that first BAT, what the hell is “Draped Leather”?

Those look like comfort leather or whatever it’s called. I really like the sports seats in my ‘03 as much as the ones I had in my ‘92.

It’s the comfort leather option. I personally think they look like crap but I guess you don’t see them when you’re in the car anyway.

Funny, if you didnt point it out I wouldnt have picked it out either. From a guy thats wanted a 993 for years the 996tt argument is interesting.
