I’m a member, or whatever they call us. There is very little local news and a whole lot of

Lots of advertisements too.

Our Neighborhood uses NABR network for internal discussions. The only problems is the users. PEBCAC...

Never heard of it, but we know all the neighbours pretty well, we all communicate well and I organize a block party every year. Burgers, dogs and beer is a good way to get the neighbours to get to know each other, who needs an app...

Out here we use Facebook subgroups. There is one for rural crime watch and another for community purposes.

We went through a spell of high crime and the crime watch group was useful. Now it’s moderated by some cray cray lady (the original lady was crazy enough) who must approve posts so by the time any posts of 5hit going down are posted, the perps are long gone. Instead, she posts random information about big city crimes and scams To keep the group relevant. I expect cookie recipes and voodoo magic to prevent rural crime will be posted any day now...

We get the mail invite trying to look like it was written by a neighbor locally. Seems like a great way for a company to mine way more personal data about me than I want them to know. No thanks.

I use it but I registered with an alias, and used the old hermits address across the street. I found out most my neighbors are batschitt crazy.

It’s the new local newspaper around here. You can lurk and never reply and no harm done I guess. To each his own.
Ps we live in a flood prone area...

I get occasional email updates after signing up to see what it is all about. OMFG!

I had no idea there were so many paranoid busybodies worrying about every little thing, and yet they leave their purse in the car while parked on the street overnight and are shocked that it was broken into.

My wife still pays attention to this as she knows all the neighborhood dogs by name. I can't go there.

I like it, especially the crime and safety updates. There is a lot of property crime in Phoenix and lots of neighbors post security and doorbell camera still photos of perps checking for unlocked car doors, casing houses, etc. I also like getting a heads up about road closures or police activity in the neighborhood. And around here we get a lot of very cool photos of wildlife in people's yards - mountain lions, bobcats, rattlesnakes, coyotes, javalina and on and on. And they've been helpful with referrals for repair services. I don't read the gossip BS.

My neighborhood is mostly lost and found dogs that get out. Every once in a while someone asks where to go for a local service like chimeny sweep etc.

I wish I could have registered with an alias. My neighbors are crazy, nosy busybodies for the most part, and as much fun as it would be to heckle them I won't do it with my real name!

I thought it might be useful, but mostly found out my neighbors are terrified and huddling in their homes, fearful someone might come to their door.

There was a long thread about 'kids in red shirts going door to door.' And they were suspicious and up to no good and casing houses, & etc. And I said: 'yes, they came to my door, and they work for Frontier and had a subscription deal, and I signed up and it was installed, and the price was great.'

And then the thread just went on about how they were certainly burglars and thugs posing as salespeople.

Seemed as if the facts weren't as interesting as the paranoia.

That's about the time I quit reading Next Door.

Besides Coronavirus posts now, there was also this:

Poop bags being left
There is someone leaving their filled poop bags along xx St sidewalks with 3 at the corner of xx and 37th. They were green bags and today an orange bag (update: orange one was picked up little later).

I am hoping this was about dog poop and not...

I got an invite from the neighborhood where one of my vacation houses is (fairy small town just bordering a small city). It is a lot like some have posted here...except on a very small scale. Worst part is that so many folks from other places have moved there because "it is such a wonderful place" and want to change everyone/everything. It does have some recommendations on restaurants and other stuff that is handy...as most services do not have internet presence. Lots of dumb questions from transplanted city folks (it is a somewhat rural area with lots of wildlife, etc.). You can select a small area/neighborhood or q larger one. You can also decide to only get "alerts" on certain topics you are interested in. I get one or two a day. Nothing about coronavirus or poop bags.

However:

ND was very useful during Hurricane Harvey as to what area roads were flooded and impassable, areas to avoid, what the Brazos River was doing, etc.

I use from time to time. Yesterday I saw someone in the hood needed help installing the ring. The woman is 80 years old. I went to install the thing for her. I just skip over the other stuff.

I was just on Nextdoor and a lady told me that she hated the President because he "reversed the laws to allow the murder of innocent giraffes and elephants by hunters"...I asked if she meant in Africa or our neighborhood...and told her I thought that he could not reverse laws in Africa. Furthermore...hunting laws were usually state or local...and the President could only pass or veto laws sent him by Congress.

Good place to learn about break-ins, road closures, lost dogs, cougar spottings and free stained sofas and mattresses (not that I am in the market for them today). Right now there is a raging debate on the county possibly banning private fireworks. It’s a battle of personal Freedom against veterans suffering from PTSD being traumatized and starting wildfires in usually tinder dry forests filled with houses (think Paradise CA). Of course there will be no winners but lots of hot tempers until the county decides.

My dog was attacked a week ago while walking it on leash, so I put out an APB to the community to be aware of the particular owner walking an aggressive unleashed dog. Got lots of thanks and similar stories.

It’s also a good resource to keep a community connected during an emergency like we just had with flooding, mudslides and road closures.
