When they passed Constitutional Carry in AZ, the only reasons the cops (DPS, really) opposed it is because their permit fee revenue dried up, and lots of cops were CCW instructors as a side gig. I know one sheriff's deputy who made a very nice side income by holding classes at his house on weekends. No more. I still have a permit, but really only for reciprocity in other states and because it exempts me from NICS checks when I buy guns from FFLs.

Here's another way to look at it.
Every gun owner should somewhat regularly go to a range to learn/practice operating it safely. If they do not have the permission to "carry" then laws vary but it usually must be "secured" away from your use and others - which to be safe means locked in a trunk. SUV's, pickups, minivans, Jeeps, 80%+ of cars now don't have a trunk. So is it ok to have on the seat next to you in a lockbox-probably not. What about on the way to your car if you live in public housing What about if you take public transport in a backpack. So the existing laws put all existing gun owners (without carry permission) at risk of firearm violations anytime they want to use it unless they have a range on property (very few). So to be safe this forces gun owners to get that extra permission to carry if they can, pay more $, go through more hoops, gun registration. Thats if they can. It is not a right so often not given in the areas where needed most (urban) and we all want gun owners to be safe and proficient so I see that as the intent |

I know several guys that got the concealed carry permit back when they were needed. Many of them still get the permit. One of them is a motorcycle rider and and he always carries a piece. He has been stopped many times, and hands the cop his driver's license and his permit card. That of course always brings up the question, are you armed sir from the cop. He always is, and admits it. It usually means no ticket, and the cop and he discussing best carry pieces and holsters.

Meaning no requirement to keep it in the trunk or anywhere else. Can be laying there on the seat fully loaded in full view.

When I was 18 and going to shoot my M27 in my Jeep CJ5 it rode on the passenger seat. Pickup trucks with gunracks in the back window were a common sight ... many times with a visible spoon. Haven't seen one like that in a long time.... decades. Mine go behind the seat or in the toolbox.

Glad to hear other states are more permissive. I was trying to say that in Mass when I got certified I was told that without a carry permit it needed to be "secured" in the car which means locked and out of your reach (trunk is safest) so that pushes everyone to go for the max carry permission possible just to be safe. But since carry is not a right in Mass not every police dept. gives it. Yes. You need to ask permission from the local police dept, get fingerprinted, pic taken, pay fee etc.
I've been told some deny and you can appeal. Some departments just delay and make you go to court for it. If you are more rural you often don't get a hard time at all. |

it's absolutely a good idea.
But a "right" does not normally require training. No training is required for "free speech," etc.... That's the point of a right is that it's a right, not a right after you've had training. Most training is primarily focused on the legal aspects, not safety or marksmanship/use.

Based on your reply which I believe is accurate , I fall into the " I believe in training " category .

Its a great idea but, shall not be infringed was not a conditional statement to law abiding citizens. You of all people understand what happens when the govt gets involved in making it nearly impossible to own or use a firearm. The agenda is not safety, it is disarming the public.
As far as the man who died in TX. Sad but unfortunately, he was a Darwin award winner. There has to be a point where we don't eliminate freedoms in the name of our own good. Frankly I'd like to see people have required training, pass a test, and be issued a license to smoke a cigarette or ride a bicycle. Heck, ever see how many people are injured or killed by a fall in the shower?
