How does that work? How can an aircraft pick up faint underwater sounds??

What if the banging noises are coming from the Titanic?

I thought this article was very poignant......

"The five people aboard the missing Titanic submersible are likely going through “significant mood swings” and “sheer panic” as their oxygen runs out — but if they don’t stay calm, they could waste more of it, according to a former US Navy psychologist."

https://nypost.com/2023/06/21/titanic-sub-crew-likely-experiencing-mood-swings-ex-navy-psychologist-says/

I could have figured that one out.

I have to wonder if some form of medication is onboard to help address such a situation.

Looking at pics of the vehicle, noticed it has all sorts of exposed wires and hoses (?) on the exterior. Does that seem like a bad idea? Get too close to wreckage, catch one of those loops or bundles of wire/hose, get stuck or lose a function?

I know zip about this stuff, just wondering.

Can you post a photo of the vehicle please? Maybe that was a prototype. I can't see any good reason to have exposed stuff on the outside.

I heard a guy today say that besides the Titanic wreckage the ocean floor is littered with fishing nets. That it could very likely that if near the ocean floor it got snagged by a net and that would pretty much seal their fate.

I was listening to the radio today and one guy mentioned that if they were unable to move, the current runs about 6 to 8 kn per hour. After three days they would've been carried 500 miles. Does that sound right?

I also read that there was a guy that does documentaries and after seeing or visiting the sub, he said no thank you.

Edit. Lots of people with opinions and thoughts out there. I guess we won't know until we find them. If we do.

For a minute, let’s say this was a demasted sailboat drifting around on surface with 5 migrants aboard. Would the same amount of resources be allocated for the search?

Asking for a friend…

Edit

For context, on July 2, 1995 as a 20 year old skipper of a 37’ Commercial Salmon Troller 5 miles off Tofino (west coast of Vancouver Island), I had to call in a Mayday. My boat was taking on water suddenly due to a hatch cover that had been removed without my knowledge.

1 coastguard life boat, 2 zodiacs, were dispatched from Tofino as well as a helicopter from Neah Bay. The engine hydraulic’d as the first zodiac arrived and we were able to get the boat pumped out with their Honda pumps (and I plugged the scuppers with rain coats).

The chopper got sent home. We were towed back to Tofino and saved the boat.

I have no idea what that escapade cost but it saved my ass.

How do we (as a society) decide who we save and who we let drown?

It just occurred to me that CO2 is probably an issue too. Even if it has a scrubber I wonder how well or if it can handle the load when O2 levels fall.

A different way to think about it found on another site...

Does anyone else not have much sympathy for billionaire thrill seekers?
The missing Titanic submersible seems to be garnering so much media attention and sympathy and I can't help but feel like it seems like it was an obvious death trap to a place people should not be going and money is being spent to rescue these (mostly) millionaires and billionaires that even though they could repay it in a second they never will even if they get rescued. Yeah, it seems like a terrible way to die, but much less deserving people die in worse ways than that every day and almost no one cares. So, I put it to people whose opinions I respect more than most, am I lacking empathy I should still be able to muster up for these rich presumably *******s?

And a reply:
I shed tears for the people and babies who drowned in the Mediterranean, and a week later, I see extreme rescue efforts for billionaires who took a voluntary trip down to gawk at the final resting place of poor souls who couldn’t buy their way onto a Titanic lifeboat.

Another:
It’s hard to feel bad for people who have the money to do stunts like this because they’re fine ruining lives with low wages, high prices from greed (not really inflation), hedge funds buying up property to drive up housing costs, etc., etc. My empathy died for billionaires (really anyone worth more than a few million) a while ago. They don’t think of the rest of us as real people in their selfish games.

And another...
I just hate that tax dollars via government coast guard operations are being spent to try to rescue (at like 0.0001% chance or success) billionaires and a corrupt and reckless CEO who knowingly and deliberately wanted to risk their lives for vanity tourism when citizens or those governments are struggling to make ends meet. Remember when that kid fell off the cruise ship drunk a few weeks ago? Did world governments stop and spend millions to attempt a rescue? **** no, because he wasn’t rich like these *******s are.

^^what a complete moron. His post wreaks of one who achieves little and begrudges those more successful. He knows nothing about them, if they’re good people or not, but assumes not. Despite their wealth it’s likely they foot more of societies bill in one year than he might in a lifetime.

Whoever wrote that needs to get out of mommies basement, get a job and contribute.

URY914, I think that’s what makes the “gallows humor” so quick and easy in this instance. We hope for good news but these guys should have known the risks.

And we all get a chuckle from the “Darwin Award” stories. This one may be applicable.
