When I was younger I thought that if a beer didn't have a puzzle in the cap it wasn't worth drinking.

Anyone remember Busch, Grain Belt, Carling Black Label, Blatz...?
We upper mid-western kids couldn't be picky back then...mid to late '50's.
If taken to the pre-frozen state, they all were fine for us silly boys wanting to be men - 14 - 15+ years old.
A great part of it all was the intrigue around getting drunk knowing it was verboten.

I discovered I liked beer for beer taste when I had my first San Miguel Dark - slight caramel/coffee flavor.
It was my springboard to beers.

In Minnesota in the '70s it was Hamm's, Grain Belt, PBR, Schlitz, Schmit, and Lienenkugel's. Actually, Lienies was more of a WI. thing and not bad cheap beer.

When you and all of your friends are 17 y.o. alcoholics in training w/ $4 an hour jobs, price per gallon is the main consideration.

Speaking of skunk....was cleaning the front yard and two Skunks decided to give it up in my front yard......nasty, Nitrile gloves and a shovel with my SCBA to scoop them bodies up......yarrrrgghhh

This list could get very long.

See there was a time when I was seriously into beer. I made my own beer. I still have a whole shelf of books on beer making and the brewing industry. I also sampled ALOT of beer...I wrote reviews and kept them in a little note book with all the labels. At last estimate, I'd had around 500 different beers.

Cheap beers don't offend me much: They are what they are. What does offend me are high priced micro-brews or imports which are often very unbalanced in flavor, victims of low quality control in packaging (skunking) or any number of other flaws.

I will regale you with some of the more interesting entries in my notebook:

1. McEwan's Scotch Ale- Zeno's winter 1992. This beer must be an acquired taste. It was sickly syrupy sweet. Uggghhhh! Bad, bad, beer...similar to chugging a QUART OF AUNT JEMIMA....no, that would be better! No hops flavor, just sickly, disgusting, malty sweet, ****ty flavor. WAY OFF BALANCE.



2. Oranjeboom Holland Beer- Zeno's Summer 1992. Bad, Bad, EVIL beer. Cardboard...no, mildewed cardboard flavor throughout. Definitely spoiled.



But for the absolute worst.....

3. Samuel Smith's Winter Welcome Ale- Zeno's Winter 1992. Bad, Bad, BAD, BAD, BAD, BAD, BAD!!! Gruesome! Unsavory! Really repulsive! Looks like Listerine...smells like Listerine, comes in a big bottle like Listerine and finally. IT TASTES LIKE LISTERINE!!!!

Being this is a seasonal beer, I hope they've changed the recipe since 1992.

Of course....that's just my opinion and I tend to be a colorful writer.

Lucky Lager, many a high school night this was consumed in mass quantities
McEwans, (above) drank this stuff for months in Scotland, rather liked it along with Tennants
The disgusting ass filtered pilsner you can get at McDonalds in the Netherlands.

I've sample most of the beers listed in this thread. But one stands out as the worst I've ever had. Wiedemanns. Watered down with almost no flavor.



Used to get a case of returnable bottles for about $7. It tasted awful, but I was on a student's budget and the price couldn't be beat. I drank a lot of this swill.

They also had a "bock" that had a bit more flavor, but it gave you beer farts.

Schafer - is the - one to have - when you're having more than one....

In college Carling Black Label Light was cheaper than Coca Cola, like 99 cents a six pack.

For Kegs, we used to get Bush Beer. That stuff was retched, but it was only $20-25 per keg. So even back in the Mid 80's, we were "Bush Buddies". Of course, the double entendre meant something different then. Now you'd be lucky to even find a bush...

Now that's funny! Unfortunately, I have been there.

There's nothing quite like a camping trip with a warm Schmitt the morning after...perferrably plucked from the dirt next to where you passed out the night before.

The worst beer I've ever had was cold but horribly stored "Murrey" beer. I think they baked the bottles in one of the storerooms at our site for about 2 years (think 120-130F). We bought the beer at cost (supposedly cost) and it was something like $2.50 each! Uggh.

The bottles in 1989 used to say something like: Fine brewing for 125 years since...established in 1862...we used to complain that we'd missed the good beer by 2 years.

OTOH, since the spirits were also sold at cost, we only had to pay $1 for a mixed drink and all mixed drinks were doubles! Vodka tonics anyone?

Blatz was by far the worst tasting..

Cheap was Piels 16oz bottles. Like $4.00 a case, no deposit..

Utica Club, Matts... I still drink Genny Cream Ale.

I remember cutting lawns when I was a kid. My favorite customer was an old guy from down south. He would insist I have Colt 45, and we would sit around and talk for a half hour. On a hot day even that stuff tastes good...

I was drinking this beer on christmas day. My uncle is russian and gets it for us. Everyone thought this beer was awesome. Man I just couldn't stand. One hell of a strong beer though...
