Jeff or Dave , please assist me in fnding a place to re-master two old Beta tapes that have incredible stuff on Mulholland. Sound is still there, but the picture is full of snow.

I received the mulholland maniacs dvd that you sent and i can't thank you enough . If you have any other material about mulholland, I would love to have copies of them as well but I really do wish to pay you for them as you are taking the time to do this and you had to buy the material also. As an ex-canyon racer from a different area, I am drawn to the legend of mulholland . I think it is great that you are documenting the events that happened there. On another note: I was driving thru the Racecourse last week on the way home from the Laurel Canyon Market and saw an old truck parked in the Sweeper. The truck was full of pieces of old metal and nearby were some Latinos dragging more metal up the hill with heavy chains from over the edge of Mulholland. The metal looked like car components. During these rough times, they are probably making a little extra money salvaging scrap metal. It also helps to clean up the environment. Will they find the Jeep, Porsche, VW, and other cars that still lie undisturbed below?

Every year Jeff puts on a terrific Halloween show for the neighborhood with complicated animated horrifics. Many different displays line his property and are impressive, especially since he did it all by himself. It's quite the attraction in Castaic I hear.

Every year about 2 weeks before Halloween I pull the toe pincher coffin out of storage and go cruising with it in the back of the Magnum. Dome light on of course and a little placard that says mortuary in the qtr window. I put Mike Myers in the passenger seat as my copilot and Chucky peeking out the back window. Its sick but you can never have too much fun!


and on Halloween night with 30,000 cubic feet a minute of industrial fog and pneumatic powered props how can you go wrong?



Five years ago I had an incident with the Santa Clarita Sheriff when I had the coffin in the bed of my truck and was seen making a U-turn in front of "Eternal Valley". I thought instead of explaining things and since I am in no hurry to go anywhere that night why not have some fun. Oh I had a lot of fun and the Sheriffs have not forgotten that night. The incident lasted about two and half hours.

Drivers of the month

Michael Eisenberg

Michael Eisenberg has been in the racing industry since 1985 and looks forward to the Coronado Speed Festival every year as a chance to get out and race with old friends. “It’s my favorite event of the year and my last hoorah before the holidays,” said Eisenberg. Eisenberg currently lives in Northridge, CA where he owns Maeco Motorsport, a shop that specializes in fixing race cars. Along with participating in the Coronado Speed Festival each year, Eisenberg is also an active member of HMSA (Historic Motor Sports Association), VARA (Vintage Auto Racing Association), Cobra Owners Club of America, The Shelby American Automobile Club and the Regional Los Angeles Shelby Auto Club. Eisenberg enjoys vintage racing over modern racing because he likes to view it as a “gentlemen’s sport” and enjoys reliving the history of the cars.

Eisenberg started his racing career in 1985 with Cal Club Solo II Autocross in 1985 and won the Class SP Championship in 1987. He then raced with the Cobra Owners Club of America at Willow Springs and started VARA racing in 1990. When Eisenberg comes down to Coronado for the annual race, he brings all of his race cars including:
1963 Ford Falcon TransAm race car with 485hp that weighs 2800 lbs. Originally raced by John Walker in Oklahoma and Texas
1967 Cougar TransAm race car with 450hp that weighs 2900 lbs. Originally raced by Mark Waco at the Riverside TransAm ’68 and was the California Club A Sedan Champion in 1967
1968 Camero Z28 TransAm race car with 525hp that weighs 3,250 lbs. Originally raced in the Midwest and on the East coast by Dwayne Winkle
1966 Shelby GT350 with 475hp that weighs 2,950 lbs
1992 Nascar Thunderbird with 725hp that weighs 3,600 lbs. Originally raced by Ted Musgraves at Watkins Glen.
Those are just his race cars! He also owns a 1964 Sunbeam Tiger, a 2004 Brecht BMW Z4, and the first car he ever drove which his family bought brand new, his 1965 Ford Mustang. Eisenberg has quite a collection of cars and loves bringing them to the event each year. At the 2007 Speed Fest, Eisenberg actually won the Founder’s Cup Award, which is the highest award for Best Performance and Presentation. Not only does he enjoy the racing aspect, but also the whole weekend in general. “Appearing in front of military personnel is always great fun," said Eisenberg. "I love the San Diego weather and it’s nice to race close to home. This particular club is more of a party atmosphere where you get to see all of your friends and have a good time.”


When he is not busy working on his cars or at his shop, Eisenberg also enjoys racing sailboats and cruising up the West coast of the U.S. and Canada in his Troller Yacht.

Brian Ferrin

Even though Brian Ferrin is a busy financial consultant in Sonoma, CA, he never misses the opportunity to come down and race in the annual Coronado Speed Festival. Ferrin started racing back in 2001 and is a member of both the Northern California Shelby Club and the Historic Stock Car Racing Group. What Ferrin loves most about vintage racing is the fact that it is well-rounded compared to points racing or professional racing. According to Ferrin, “Vintage racing offers a better blend of comradery on the track.” When Ferrin comes to San Diego each year, he brings his three race cars:
1970 Mustang TransAm with 490hp weighing 3,200 lbs.

1996 Chevy Monte Carlo Nascar with 740hp weighing 3,400lbs.

1992 Ford Thunderbird Nascar with 660hp and also weighing 3,400lbs.

Originally, his TransAm was driven by George Follmer in 1971 winning three 2nd place awards and then driven by Marshall Robbins from 1972 to 1973. The car was then retired up until 2003 when Ferrin discovered it and put it back on the track. His Monte Carlo was previously driven by Sterling Marlin and his Thunderbird was once driven by Jimmy Hensley. Ferrin started his racing career in July 2001 in Portland, Oregon at an event that he now attends on a regular basis and in 2006 he won the Rolex Award at the Monterey Historics.

Ferrin looks forward to the Coronado Speed Fest every year not only for the excitement of racing but also for the off-track activities that go on. “The Navy and the Military go out of their way to host us,” said Ferrin. “The Admiral’s party and our times spent on the USS Reagan really stand out.” When Ferrin is not busy racing on the track, he enjoys restoring and maintaining his old cars, cruising in his 1965 Mustang convertible and going snow and water skiing.

While waiting for the Mechanical Fuel Injection Pump to be repaired, some other preparations are required to drive the Carrera on Mulholland again.
Here's how the rotors looked this morning. Untouched for 20 years and full of Black Widows, they need re-awakening.


After some rigorous sanding with 320 grit, the years of rust came off nicely.


Metal Cleaner works great on corroded steel. It eliminates rust on metal surfaces that has been prepped correctly.

The Carrera sat inside of my Carport for many years during the 70's, 80's, and early 90's. The car was covered but the wheels were exposed to the weather.
Many foggy nights on Mulholland corroded the beautiful chrome like polish on the wheels. You can see what the moisture did to the finish in the photo.
The Carrera is now safely in a Garage in the center of my house.


Here is how the wheels looked before I started to repair them.


Here is how they look after a little work on the lower portion of the wheel. This is one of the front 9x15 inch wheels.
Start with 400 grit to remove the pitting, and follow up with 600 to prepare for polishing.
I havn't started to polish yet, this is just with sanding. "Mother's Mag and Aluminum Polish" should bring it back to original luster.
Unbelievable, the finish might be saveable after all. I wasn't sure that it would work.
In 1976, it was difficult to find someone to polish these magnesium wheels, the rears are 11 inches deep and hard to work on.
