The plate and or the car could be taken from me, so to avoid that headache, the reflective plate will be used.

Is that true? Anyone know for sure? Does it really "come up" that a plate is reflective or of older variety? And what are the real ramifications to running an older/nonstandard plate?

it might be too fine a point of philadelphia law, but could you run the vintage plate on top of the new plate. i know, extra weight, but technically you would have the new plate on the car.

Here's how I see it... You get pulled over for "street racing", it won't matter what plate is on the car, as you get your car crushed.

A leisure Sunday drive with a cop behind you.... I doubt he'll 'just' run your plate, but, since it's obvious you have a cage and a plastic rear window, they might...

You can always run the reflective plates for the time being and if you get comfortable, transfer the stickers to the blue plates.

I spent an hour and an half "discussing" this with the DMV rep. since I really wanted my old plate on the car, the correct plate.

That reflective plate sucks the big one, big time.

I don't want visibility on the road, but exactly the opposite, just like in the past.

A reflective plate comes up as "(R)" when a cop checks your plate.
Each plate registration tag has a serial number attatched to it and they have that info as well.

It is illegal to change the color of your plate! Darn it! And we need to limit all the crapp that the Officer will be looking for. OMG!
There's no point in throwing another chain into the machine, you can't fight City Hall.

What? Car crushing? Transferring stickers? A "LEISURE" Sunday drive?
I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry.

How about a Klingon cloaking device? I think I saw one on Ebay recently. ;)

An afterthought...
My BANNING plate is still in blue since I always kept it active on one car or another. That plate could be used if a non-reflective plate is needed or desired.
However the MLHLND plate really belongs on the car.
Any opinions?

shift linkage

While driving the car in the past few days, I noticed that second didn't want to engage fully. Probably from too many slam shifts into second that lengthened the linkage.

A small adjustment seemed neccessary to remedy the problem. If it were not adjusted properly, it could lead to a broken second gear tooth.

After loosening the cinch clamp, the shifter rod was easily shortened.
Now she shifts just like a virgin again. Very positive into second and all the other gears. It feels just right.

New brakes

New brakes were installed today. First all the rotors had to be re-drilled to ensure clean holes.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1232338366.jpg

Some corrosion was easily visible inside the vented rotors and needed to be cleaned up.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1232338389.jpg

After drilling out and blowing out with compressed air it looked like this.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1232338411.jpg

The rear brakes were done first.

The deck lid looks great, but the Whale Tail is going to be put back on.

Brakes

After re-drilling the vented rotors, it was time to replace the brake pads.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1232339027.jpg

Here are the new rear brake pads next to the old ones still in their calipers.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1232339047.jpg

You can see that there is little wear on the old pads. Just a lot of time.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1232339066.jpg

The front brake pads were done next.

Lug nuts should be lubricated with Moly Grease every once in a while to keep them operating smoothly and to prevent rust forming.

New Goodyear racing tires tomorrow...

Banning,
I have lurked around this thread from the beginning. Great to see your car back to where see belongs. Just one question, why the whale tail? I think it looks great as is and I think the tail distracts from the lines. I know everyone has an opinion on this, just wanted to get your thoughts.
Anyway, thanks for the thread and best of luck!

Thanks very much Mike. I'm sure that Derek would echo my appreciation of your thanks, and also to everyone else who has enjoyed this thread.

This thread brought me and the Carrera back from the dead. Ironically, the Spectre can run the hills of Mulholland once again. I cannot express my gratitude enough.

The Whale Tail vrs. stock deck lid has perplexed me for 33 years, so I understand your question entirely.
The clean lines of the deck lid justify the beautiful lines of the 911, and it looks smooth, clean, and complete.

The huge out-standing over the lines Whale Tail almost looks characature like but does make the car look more...like it's going to take off.
Plus that particular Tail was popular at the time of construction.

So I don't know, some times I feel like tossing a coin and saying, "Heads or 'Tails'?". ;)

Whale Tale = Rear Downforce :)

Rear Downforce = Less Likelihood of "Bad Things"

I second Heel n Toe,
While the car does look kinda cool with the standard tail.
The car ran with the tail back in the day and that makes it period correct.
just my 2$ (inflation ;>)

Here's the last Dynolicious run from this afternoon:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1232414647.jpg

HP came in at 224, 0-60 in 6.75.

Not bad for a Targa!

Brake pad run in period

Here are some photos from today.

The new brake pads had to be properly run-in per the instructions on the box. 10 stops were made from 40 to 10mph with a quarter mile inbetween each braking.

They work well after the break in. Thanks again TRE for all your help.

Cool! How about a Thursday meet?

R390 01-19-2009 08:43 PM

The old Mulholland raceway you guys are talking about needs to be repaved and taken care of its just getting in worse condition as time passes.

My question to the Mulholland raceway veterans , have you been chased by residents or the local rent-a-cop in some dodge Neon ? or had things throwing at you from residents ?

Not bad at all, considering that the factory said 207hp.

Do you have a chip in it or any other mods?
