No, I have no idea where Derek was....

I also have no idea who I caught up to.

Nope. I was long gone at that point. I took off with Magnus, the super Evo, and a couple 'Vettes right away.

In a field of around 120 cars, unless you left right away, everything was in the back.

I wasn't in the back, Sidney... More in the middle.

I was also parked a bit away from the front and a nice traffic jam formed when we all tried to leave at the same time.

The 959 is so yesterday....

Wayne wanted to show off the water spots on the 3.6 Boxster project.

That's part of the trouble with running with such a big group, Sidney. It's actually hard to run with your friends. It felt like I ran alone for most of the day.

I tried to leave with Magnus/Derek/the Vettes/orange 350Z from the Stunt overlook, but got caught behind the very pretty Alfa Spyder. It was driven well, but not nearly as fast as those guys. The Alfa waved me by, but by then the guys in front were gone. I ran down Piuma alone, along PCH, back up Kanan-Dume (where I saw Magnus stopped for a cup of coffee?), and was near the bottom of Encinal before I caught up to a black 996 Turbo and then the other group of fast guys (Dave B., Chris G., Chris B., Radu, that modded Turbo, the very fast Miata, and 450knot) caught up to me. The blast up Mul Hwy in that pack was ridicuously fun. It's nice to follow Porcupine, as he makes driving that GTi look so effortless.

They're like LeMans starts. Only you're gridded 45th. And not everyone in front of you is as fast as your buddies. And passing is nigh impossible.

I just did this and I feel very odd and humbled in a way...

Go to the beginning of this thread. Start reading. Then, think about Banning showing up on New Year's with the RSR this year.

Be thankful for being a part of reviving something that was almost forgotten... not just Banning and his car and his book, but everyone that had a story to tell. Everyone that made Mulholland a part of LA history.

The greatest thing to come out of all of this would be that the history of Mulholland... it's importance to LA and LA car culture, will be carried on just a bit longer.

And you were the instigator and I am thankful. Not just for getting me motivated to restore the old girl but also for creating a "Mulholland Memorial" for everyone to enjoy for years to come.

Mulholland will not be forgotten!

I applaude you!

That's not a nice comment Dave, even though you were joking. Wayne is nice to allow us (give us) these threads. He should be respected and appreciated.

Hey, if we want to make the memory of racing on Mulholland last a little longer, we should go sponsor one of those benches at the Barbara Fine overlook and get a little plaque made up for the MIRRC.

(Chris, I think you're misunderstanding slodave's dry humor.)

Banning or any of the other old(er) Mul guys: does the owner of this car sound familiar? (See fourth and last bullets point in the ad, to which I've posted a link below.)

Porsche : 911:eBay Motors (item 300366594815 end time Nov-19-09 14:20:26 PST)

I am (was) an infamous Mulholland Drive canyon racer (early 1980's) who after racing the local canyons for several years sought to build the ultimate canyon rocket . Although I did build this car for racing local canyons , I never did race it when completed and gave up illegal street / canyon racing completely but still loved fast street cars . The car also has never been on the track . The car would make a fun track car if so desired by adding a roll bar and a few safety devices .

My name is Phil and I can be reached at 323-xxx-xxxx
edit: Upon closer inspection of the pictures in the ebay ad, I know that car! Well, I don't know the car any more than what's in the ad, but the car/owner/house is two doors down from my parents in Laurel Canyon.

This is Phil M's car. He is the Mul Racer on the cover of the Herald Examiner article about Mulholland racing doing an expose on the Mulholland Carrera from around '81. He is also in The Mulholland Experience book.

His slant nose is a very fast car. Phil puts lots of money into it awhile back. But his garage is full and he is going to keep his red Testarossa instead.

He has a beautiful house in Mount Olympus off of Laurel Canyon. Jane and I go to his spectacular parties that he has bi-annually.

A very interesting idea Alereck, if it were possible.

Perhaps we misunderstand some humor sometimes. We all have our own personal idea of what is funny or not funny.

That's a true statement I believe, we are all different after all.

Wow. So much history that I grew up right next to! Next time I'm at my parents (this weekend?) maybe I'll have to walk over and introduce myself. Perhaps I'll have to request a test drive.

I'd be happy to introduce you to Phil if you want Alereck. He's really a cool guy.

btw I really enjoyed being on your tail and hearing your turbo kick in, awesome! Your 930 is very nice.

Lots of fun.
