Post Custom built Ferrari

This seemed quite interesting. I didn't know that Ferrari would build a one-off car for anyone.
Impressive!

One of a Kind: Ferrari Builds Customer Dream Car
The car enthusiast who says that, as a child, he didn't want to be a car designer when he grew up would be rare indeed. Doodles drawn in kindergarten might have resembled boxes with wheels, but we imagined them to be the sleek and powerful sports cars we saw at auto shows, in magazines and on television.

As far as childhood car designing ambitions go, Edward Walson might be like many enthusiasts. Unlike most, however, he fulfilled his personal car design dreams. Walson became a member of Ferrari's most exclusive clientele when he commissioned its Special Projects program to build the one-of-a-kind P540 Superfast Aperta that was unveiled at this year's Cavallino Classic in Palm Beach, Fla. It is Walson's 10th Ferrari.

Ultra-exclusive brands typically cater to customer requests for special paint and interior work and sometimes-mild modifications. But only Ferrari takes that concept to its conclusion – designing and building a "one-off," a single car for one customer, who even gets to name the car.

Independent coachbuilders have in the past built custom-bodied cars for Ferrari customers. The 1963 Ferrari that inspired Walson's P540 Superfast Aperta was one such car. Cars built by Ferrari Special Projects, however, are official new Ferrari models, fully homologated to the customer's home country motor vehicle regulations.

The P540 Superfast Aperta is the second car built by Ferrari Special Projects; the mid-engine Project SP1, based on the F430 and designed by Fioravanti for a customer in Japan, was the first in 2008. Pininfarina designed Walson's car based on the 599 GTB Fiorano. Inspiration came from a one-off 1963 Ferrari that Walson saw in "Toby Dammit," a film directed by Federico Fellini as part of the 1968 trilogy, "Spirits of the Dead."

That car, built by Carrozzeria Fantuzzi originally on a 330 LMB chassis, was known in the Fellini film as the "golden Ferrari" for its distinctive gold color. Walson derived his custom-built Ferrari's name as follows: "5" is for the approximate 500 cc displacement of each of the V12's cylinders; "40" for the 40th anniversary of the film (when Walson first saw it); "Superfast" is an homage to the limited-production Ferrari GT's from the 1960s -- and "Aperta" is Italian for "open."

Walson's P540 Superfast Aperta clearly evokes the original Fantuzzi car, in its overall theme and specifically in three key elements — the side vents behind the front and rear wheels, the integrated, body-color rollbar and, naturally, the distinctive gold color. The rear view recalls other classic Ferrari models, as well, including the 1963 250 GT Lusso and the 1964 275 GTB.

Thanks to intensive use of computer aided design (CAD) and extensive use of carbon fiber, Walson's car weighs just 50 pounds more than a 599 GTB. For the interior, Walson specified a wood finish on the steering wheel and console resembling that used in 1960s Ferraris. The 1,000-watt JBL Pro Audio system is housed in a vintage Becker head unit, complete with customized iPod slot.

"I had always dreamed of designing sports cars," Walson explains, "and when I saw this film, the decision came of its own accord: one day I would have ‘my' Ferrari."

And now, he does.

Here are photos of the original.

The body was later removed from the LMB chassis and the original LMB body refitted. The Fantuzzi body was then fitted to a 330 GT 2+2 chassis and painted red. Apparently it is now in the US.

Cheers,
Kurt O.

I feel like the entire world should be jealous!!!!

Had a gig in Santa Monica tonight.
Coming home... 405 North... Mulholland is my preference to the 101 across the Valley.
Late at night... and without incrimination...
Beautiful LA/Valley skyline far below, with only the deafening bellows of my open flat-six screaming "MORE!"
Windows down, sunroof open to an ironically dark sky, heat exchangers a comfort to the cold wonders.
Go wide.
Throw it out.
Heel-toe a thousand times.
Go straight.
Brights on.
Senses pulsing, yet...
Calm.
Relaxed.

Above the city.

Free.

It's something you have to experience to understand. Those who say Mulholland is dead... Mulholland is so passe... so wrong. It is not quantifiable by even pavement, or how many turns there are, or how "safe" it is.
The freedom is tangible.
It's still there.
For a while tonight, I felt alive!

Meh, looks like a Maserati humped a Vette and this came out of the Vette's rear...
One of a kind? I sure hope so...
I hope it drives better than it looks...

Derek, you truly have the Mulholland Spirt.
Your comments about feeling free, driving details, and how Mulholland is very much Alive shows your romantic respect and admiration for the famous roadway.
My hat's off to you!

Too bad you werent around in the glory days. I think that you would have fit right in like a tight driving glove and would have been a King of Grandstands like Johnny Mul, Dave B., Kurt O., Chuck Turner, and certain other old regulars were.

Please don't ever lose your respect and warm regards for the Drive and please help to spread your love of Mulholland to other drivers who appreciate tight turns and short straightaways. When I'm gone, (and old man Gary is too), you may be the next "Keeper of the Lore".

ps: I must have heard you in the early morning because I had a dream about a white 911 on Mulholland screaming thru the turns.
Subliminal suggestion...perhaps.

Post Old photos of 99

These are two photos from the old days that are hanging in Fire Station 99 today.

Java and Mul is visible just behind the cab of the Engine, in the distance.

Derek,

You "get it". Most people, then and now, didn't or don't.

Post Mulholland road condition

We have talked about the poor condition of the road surface of Mulholland Drive several times.

Heavy road traffic from construction, weak berms, natural springs, and other causes have taken it's toll on the road's integrity.

This part of Mulholland is plauged by difficulty. Located just east of Antelo, which is just east of Roscomare is an area we used to call "The Bumps" due to all the bumps that have always been present there. (also called Graffiti due to the running wall next to Mul that usually had paint spray on it). It has been repaired several times before at about 15 year intervals.

It is an area of hydrolic pressure where a natural spring exits at the road surface.
This causes the road to buckle even months after the repair is completed.

It is one of the worst areas of Mulholland Drive in terms of conditions.

These photos were taken yesterday.

Another place where many springs are located is in the Racecourse.
We always thought that someone was watering down Mul to discourage the racing, but it was a natural spring located uphill in the Sweeper.
Many other springs lie just below Mul in the same area. I have seen tunnels below Carls with streams coming out of them.
Really interesting! (for a Geologist)

Huh. I always thought the water on the road was from sprinkler run-off. Interesting.

Post World's most expensive Car

This is interesting.

A rare Bugatti recently sold for nearly $40,000,000 -- making history as
The World`s Most Expensive Car.

This 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic will cross the country from Connecticut to California, where it will star in the new Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard.

Haha who would have thought the most expensive car would come to oxnard...

You wouldn't happen to know when it will arrive and be on display?

Here is some info on the Mullin Automotive Museum...

The Mullin Automotive Museum celebrated its grand opening with a black tie event for media and distinguished guests. Of course, museum founder Peter Mullin will tell you that his new museum isn’t just about cars. The 50,000 square foot facility, located in Oxnard, CA, was built as a homage to the art deco period, and plenty of historic artwork and furniture can be found throughout the building.

The cars, however, are the main attraction. More than 100 French automobiles with names like Bugatti, Delahaye, Delage, Hispano-Suiza, Talbot-Lago and Voison can be found in the museum. Immaculate restorations are featured alongside original cars from the legendary Schlumpf Reserve Collection. A collection of race cars takes residence on the second floor in a display that mimics the Le Mans pre-WWII.

Specifically for the grand opening, Bugatti also loaned the museum a collection of prototypes that led to the development of the Veyron 16.4. including the 1998 EB118 Concept, the 1999 EB218 Concept and the 1999 18.3 Chiron Concept. A beautiful EB110 SS and a brand new Grand Sport were also outside to greet guests.

Perhaps our favorite car on display, though, was an incredible 1937 Delahaye Type 145 V12 Coupe. It seems like such a beautiful car would be confined to carrying around dignitaries and celebrities, but in reality the gorgeous coupe raced at Le Mans and the German Grand Prix. Since purchasing the car in 2002, Peter Mullin has taken the car to the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Pebble Beach Concours, and it has won Best in Class at both events.
