Saw the "King of the Hill" at the New Years day drive and asked about it on the forum and was pointed to this thread. Just finished reading the whole thread, all I can say is WOW!!!

Thank you to all who have added to this historical narrative.

Many times it brought back periods in my youth, Crusing Van Nuys Blvd, Bobs Toluca Lake, Drag racing on Forrest Lawn Drive, (long before Oakwood). Barris Kustoms, there use to be a guy that air brushed sweat shirts there.

It would be great if the city repaved Mulholland from Laurel to Coldwater as it is in serious disrepair, but it seems that they are broke.

Perhaps there will be a gathering again sometime soon at the truckstop....

The guy in the youtube video in the POC race slamming his downshifts without matching RPM.....he would be amazed at how much better his braking and corner entry can be done correctly!

Los Angeles motorists should avoid traveling westbound Wednesday on Mulholland Drive between Laurel Canyon Boulevard and Coldwater Canyon Avenue, officials said.

A portion of the heavily traveled artery was washed out by the rainstorms that buffeted the region in recent days, according to the city's Department of Transportation.

Mul is apparently washed out in the middle of the race course. Sad.

When did that happen? I came through Mul last Saturday to find two yellow-slickered people directing traffic between Carl's and the Sweeper. The east-bound lane had some debris (though not worth directing traffic over). C'mon, it's just a dogleg chicane!

That's the spot. All the ground underneath the road washed out, and the west bound side it about to, or already has, fallen in.

Wow. That's fatal. Maybe that's why she was motioning me to slow down. I thought to myself, how fast can I be going in a Honda Civic with two sleeping kids in the back? (Don't answer; my wife might one day read this.)

Something like that might never get fixed. Another portion got washed out in a little shortcut I used to take from Mulholland (what's the road right next to Laurel Cyn and Mul?) over to Nichols. That stretch is just K-railed off, now. You can walk it, but no vehicular traffic. That was 7 or 8 years ago.

I see them rebuilding it for a number of reasons, but the biggest being the amount of traffic that comes through there. Where will the giant tour busses go???

Once again, the weather has destroyed all our fun. Here's a list of closures and damages after the recent storms.

-- Rambla Pacifico Road is closed between Las Flores Road and Azurelee Drive in Malibu.
-- Glendora Mountain Road from Big Dalton Canyon Road to East Fork Road is closed due to icy conditions, according to the county Department of Public Works.

-- Glendora Ridge Road from Glendora Mountain Road to Mt. Baldy Road is closed due to snow.

-- Mt. Emma Road from Cheseboro Road to 87th Street East.

-- Mt. Wilson-Red Box Road from Video Road to Angeles Crest Highway.

-- Big Tujunga Canyon Road from the Los Angeles city line to Angeles Forest Highway.

-- Angeles Forest Highway from Angeles Crest Highway to Big Tujunga Canyon Road; a 20-foot section was destroyed during the January storms, and the road is expected to be closed until March.

-- Angeles Forest Highway from Big Tujunga Canyon Road to Aliso Canyon Road.

-- Upper Big Tujunga Canyon Road from Angeles Forest Highway to Angeles Crest Highway.

-- Stonyvale Road, from 1,200 feet west of Vogel Flats Road to 4,000 feet west of Vogel Flats Road, near the Big Tujunga Ranger Station.

-- Angeles Crest Highway is closed to the public from La Cañada Flintridge to Islip Saddle and is expected to remain closed until late March.

Nope. I drove by it as they were working on it, but before they closed it. Right before the sweeper as you go west.

Traffic became more hellish than usual yesterday afternoon when two canyon routes suffered after Mulholland Drive was shut down due to a washed out road. This morning, Cora Jackson Fossett at the city's Department of Public Works explains what happened in an e-mail:
Due to recent storms, a washout or erosion gully has developed on the northern or downslope side of Mulholland. The washout is 35 ft wide, 10 ft deep. The washout has eroded fill material consisting of silty sand used when the road was constructed. Currently, the road is reduced to one east-bound lane and Public Works has K-rails, barricades and signage to warn motorists of the hazards. Due to the importance of Mulholland Drive to the area's traffic flow, we have requested to repair the road on an emergency or expedited basis.
The hole can be found "seven-tenths of a mile" east of Coldwater Canyon, said Jackson Fossett.
City officials are seeking "expedited funding" to make emergency repairs.

Thanks to all!!

I saw Bannings car at the New Years Day drive, and asked about it in the Forum and was directed to this thread.
WOW is all I can say!
I have read every post, what a historical chronicle of the golden age
Thanks to Banning and to all who added to the thread.

Having grown up in the area, but was a straight line racer in my youth there were lots of references I am familiar with.
TL Bobs,"River Road" drag racing on Forrest Lawn Drive long before Oakwood Apts, was my cup of tea, Van Nuys Blvd, Barris Kustoms.

When Mulholland gets repaired I hope that there will be another gathering at the "Truckstop"

Thanks again!!

Are you referring to Supercar Sunday at the Westfield Promenade on Topanga and Erwin? This is the one organized by Dustin of VCR fame and the LA Auto Gallery. As far as I know it is going strong.Supercar Sunday | Welcome
Anyway, tell us the story.

Anyone know why Laurel Canyon (southbound, just south of Mul) is closed?
