I agree with you on this section from coldwater to Beverly glen is more fun to drive than the "racecourse." Although I enjoy driving the opposite direction meaning from Beverley glen to coldwater. By the way, any update from the originators of this thread? As someone who's read the entire thread over several years it's gotten very quiet on here. |

So here it is or close enough! I guess I am not keeping up with these new car models! Apparently about a 180K car! I went back and watched the video on a way better screen than my home lap top! I also should clean my screen, but I now do not see that it was raining. I saw no drops on the windshield, and I would say the perception on accidently hitting the wipers is what happened. I think I would end up breaking that lever off if it interrupted my run, because I really don't ever use them (turn signals?)! And yes, I now even see the trash cans! That car does brake pretty good, probably saved the guys A$$! So why does such an expensive car handle so badly! I think I can answer my own question, because they attempt to put all kinds of comfort into them! And these power steering units I personally don't like the lack of actual feedback! And probably has that computer handling drivers assist stuff, that should have been turned off or unplugged! The car name is stupid ""e92"" whatever! And this run is now especially bad, if it was dry, and some of you called it! I was in never never land thinking pretty great for a Fox Mustang, but now pretty lousy for a 180K car ""in the dry""! But the video is pretty close to how it was, and being this is a modern run, we have a new hero section, since the character of the old course has been tamed by road development! I remember at I think Carls, where run off from the hills had caused a lot of dirt wash on that turn and many many more nuisances, but the narrowness feeling of the road was what stood out the most! Now they have more run off shoulders and stuff done for modern safety! If you want to drive a road that I would say has the old character of old Mulholland, the closest would probably be the old road (backside) into Mt. Baldy! It has absolutely no modernization! It is way longer, almost rally stage length and style, but is extremely narrower, but it is a good purest road, but just don't go head on into someone else will be my caution! And while up there, you should add in Old Glendora with it's big sweeper turns! Since baldy has a direct route, no one does tourist sightseeing on these two mountain routes much anymore! ![]() As to the true Mulholland crowd (I was not a local and was just a very occasional visitor back then)-- the real Crowd, I doubt if the topic is all talked out! I really have enjoyed this thread, and hope I am not being viewed as a hi-jacker, because they caused my interest in this area of the car hobby, my Mentors! You're blaming the car itself for the handling. It's not the car, it's the driver.
He sucks. He doesn't know how to drive smoothly. He's in it at full throttle way too much... probably on purpose, trying to emulate one of his "drift heroes." Many people think full throttle and stomping the brakes is the best way to drive quickly. Put an experienced driver in that car who knows how to roll on the throttle so he isn't breaking the tires loose all the time and find the optimum speed for each section so he isn't overcooking it going into every turn and this would be a much different video. And he'd be faster through there, also.

I was focused on the driver, till i found out it was an expensive BMW

Heck something like that with it's price tag, should make anyone look good! ![]() So I am blaming the car! So in review I first bought into the conditions and the car, then I was blaming a Fox mustang solely, then i learned it was a BMW and was blaming the driver, until I found out it was an expensive one, so I am now back to blaming the car! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by TCracingCA; 12-22-2015 at 05:44 PM.. |

Yes everything I usually write usually has some humor and sarcasm!
Quote:
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Etc. etc. I think I have perfected the fine art of smile icon placement! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() But the no brain high risk and with total disregard for anyone's safety runs where a back in the day thing, when at least I was a teenager or in my 20's, but I had already actually started my professional level ambitions toward a driving career back then. And because I thought I read someone write that this was a preserved video, my mind went straight to back in the day, is what I thought I had viewed a couple of times watching this expensive modern BMW run! In my first post, I did write that we would all like to have thought we were great drivers back at those ages, but probably weren't. If you look at Page 339 of my mega thread additions here, you will see that I was trying to head for entry into IMSA (took the course, bought me a car, etc.), when I was just 19 and was driving 300+hp Porsches and 500+hp Corvettes at that age. As an adult, I go fast with a whole lot more thought of safety now, than the younger version of me; and that younger version of me would kick my butt now in the modern, since I have aged and have a better perspective of death now! I see your profile comments (heal and toe and run smooth and fast) so I would bet that you are a very precise and calculating, focused great driver! I am extremely smooth, and apex placement for me is one of my things, even ramping on the freeways during my commute to and from work! I am a notorious late apexer though, especially on any road that is unfamiliar to me, because if I can wind back up the speed using a good portion of a turn, I do! I am usually back on the gas far earlier than most people would even imagine. But then on the opposite, I am an extremely late braker on into a lot of turns also!, and getting clear into the apex line under braking is a dicey way of doing it! and in an unfamiliar car, I would never do that! PS in the SCCA cones and out in Canyons like Mulholland, etc.. Guys with mega dollar cars like this BMW, or the Ferrari's usually get there A$$ whooped and by stuff that costs a fraction!!!!!! Some of those little Datsun 510's or Mercury V6/V8's Capris, Mini Coopers, etc. used to waste high dollar rides, back in the day! So in review! I took good training for an IMSA license given and taken at Bondurant's fine school back in the day at Sears Point Raceway, and then because of Canyon Racing, I took that fine training and converted it into what is proper for Canyon Racing-- which is looking for that nuisance advantage, that little bit more of speed, the maximization of rpms out onto a straight, cutting a line toward a turn to extend a braking zone, the carrying of momentum thru a turn holding within the best meat of your power band, throwing or not throwing shifts to stay within the power band and weighing that practicality, decipher of sections of road opening out or closing down and shifting your apex points, or throwing away a petty line or even speed into one turn, for the benefit of the next three turns coming for an overall advantage, studying your G-analyst results and overlaying run graphs over previous run graphs, etc.. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. And I am lucky that I haven't died yet!!!!! And I hope everyone realizes that I am just trying to keep this great thread lively!!! But I will say that I could take that guy in that car and work with him and you would see a wonderful new video! Because I think the guy has potential, he at least isn't afraid of the road! I see a lot of high end car Owners that won't ever take their hot cars over 100mph, and I see numerous others that probably don't know what putting it into the cam sounds like! If they heard their Porsches or car snarl a little, they probably would think someone is going to hurt the darn thing! So how many have actually banzai'd a road like this???? Probably just primarily the crowd here, that has come on to share!!!!! Because God forbid that we talk about speed and illegal road manners on the proper forums, and that is probably why this thread ended up in the Off Topic Section, would be my guess! But that is a wise move, by the Moderators!, and the thread has been a million plus hit success! Ps that is not me in that BMW!!!!! Just in case we have suspicious people in this forum! Well Frank, Happy New Year
Cool video. Like the sign says frckn cool. Hoping you are enjoying the new GH4 and gimbal mount, great snapshot of your hardwood floors! Wishing you the best with those crushed discs and stenosis. Nope not due to mogul skiing, its simply old age. Happens to the best of us. But its still a British car?

Mr. Chis Banning
Do you have any timeline for your book being finished and released?
I have your other book, and John Hall's, but have been waiting anxiously for your deeper dive into the Mulholland racing antics. I'll be purchasing 2 copies, one for me and another for a friend who first took me up to the racetrack back in 1978. |

Well, I have to travel for work to Agoura Hills next week. Guess I'll have time to take the rental beater on Mulholland to see what it's like. Then I may be able to relate to this a bit better.

The new book is about half completed. I have many distractions and unfinished projects that have been keeping me from working on the two new books that are planned but I will get to it as soon as I can. I am ready to announce what the first new book will be like. It will be larger in size with a new cover photo that is already planned. All text will be professionally edited with no interference from a co-author. It will be a completely new book with a new title. I have the website for the new book's title and the title for the second book as well. I will announce the titles once they are registered with The Library of Congress. The Table of Contents is interesting and I will post after this post. Last edited by Banning; 03-22-2016 at 09:26 AM.. |

The third book will be even larger in format.
It will showcase all the groups and famous Racers of Mulholland Drive. Each group will have it's own roster of members, photos of their cars, and their stories from their respective eras. It will be arranged chronologically from oldest to youngest. I thought about calling it The Mulholland Chronicles but I have a better title that is more suited to this story. This book should take less time since I already have over 30 interviews already completed. It will the most complete listing of all those who together, made Mulholland the famous road it is today. No one should be left out. |
