corrections
I've really enjoyed reading this thread. I went by Dave's(TREcup) today to drop off the complimentary Porsche racing manual I promised him. I expressed my consideration for his feeings if I correct a few facts that have been stated. So please don't be offended Dave.
The Carrera body was modified by Arnie Verbiesen and his talented friend Don, but only the slant roof. IT IS NOT A CHOP ROOF!!! I bought the bare frame and hired Arnie and Don to put factory steel flares on and clip the front and back to accept square bumpers. I did this also to eliminate the side battery boxes in front. John Mason made the aluminum rollcage, chassis stiffiners, oil tank and shock tower braces. All of the RSR suspension, gas tank, Bozzani built motor and transmission, solid bushings, seats, gauges, muffler, and other parts came right off my wide body RSR that had way too much tire for the street. So wide it actually slowed the car down. These parts were transferred to Arnie's previously owned Chassis, thus making a much better car for me in terms of looks and performance. I bought the fuchs wheels from Arnie since my BBS wheels were way too wide at 11 and 15 inches. A friend of mine that worked at Bob's Automotive Paint in Santa Monica painted the car in an empty warehouse one morning in factory pak two-stage silver. Man did it look good when I picked it up that afternoon. So as previously stated by TREcup, I did not start buying RSR bits and pieces to get it to point it is today. It has not changed since 1976 when I first registered it for street use. One more correction for Dave, Yes Dave the Carrera definitely is a ghost in storage in my house but I never attended a POC or PCA event with my Carrera as you stated. It is intended for Mulholland ONLY! It was made for this road and shall only drive on this road. They belong together. Also, that's how a 30 plus year old car has only 4,434 miles on it. I did want to race on the racetrack to see what it would be like so I built that 1967 A sedan Camaro. I went to 2 SCCA driving shools and participated in two races to get my competion licence. Before I painted it Porsche India Red it was blue with gold wheels. The photos are below. I loved Riverside International Raceway as a track, with nice ups and downs through the course. Dave you are right on saying that I ended up deciding that the track was not for me and I will say why. On a hot day at RIR, inside a closed car, with fireproof Nomex long underwear under a Nomex suit, with a helmet sock under your full-face helmet and long Nomex gloves it is sooooooo hot. I almost passed out in turn nine and bought the farm. That is why I quit the track, and Willow Springs isn't any cooler either. You can have the heat. It's not for me. I'm not picking on Dave, he's a great guy. I have a few more corrections from a few other good folks, just to be fair. ![]() It's been a nice warm day for a race and I'm trashed from the heat. I towed the A Sedan from Mulholland to RIR with the blue El Camino that I used to race Mul with. ![]() I'm in the third car coming up the esses approaching turn 6, look familiar? ![]() Entering turn 6 you can see the right front wheel lift. Fun. ![]() Same thing, different lap. ![]() Apex of turn 6. ![]() Entering the back straightaway. ![]() Gotta get rid of that pesky 914-6 on my tail. ![]() Hey Dave, wasn't that you talking about off roading in the area out of bounds to the right? Or was that Bart? Does it look familiar? More corrections to follow. |

One more small correction for TREcup, Rex DID beat John Hall with his fast bug, but John was not driving his Camaro, he was in his Pinto. His Camaro was too fast to be beaten by a bug, even with Rex at the wheel. I called John for this info and he told me that afterwards he and Rex spent the evening talking cars at four'n twenty on Laurel Cyn. Blvd.

that camaro looks real bad a$$ ! very cool with the wide steelies and the slicks (caldwell recaps- or new blue streaks?)
the only places i spun at riverside was 1) coming out of turn one (when a cv locked up on the left rear of my buddy's short geared 2.2 S targa) smacked the wall and ended up smearing the left side of the bodywork along the cinder block 2) a few times on the transition from 7a- 7b short course, and off in the esses various times. Never on the straight, so it may have been bart Thanks for the corrections- the track stuff and you was hearsay from way back when

A comment was posted by alwaysflat6s about how there are many fast looking cars that don't perform the way they look and I agree.
Be rest assured that any RSR prepped for Mulholland in racing tires would be a formidible opponent. If you've got the balls it will redefine speed for you as Dave will attest. |

Thanks Dave, yes they were Bluestreaks on the Camaro but rules limited them to 8 inches wide.

Ifot posted some nice comments about the Carrera. Thank you. However I must disagree that Mulholland Racing is being quickly forgotten about. What about the two Ferraris that crashed on or near Mul, they got lots of publicity. If you want to see the new breed, go to www.mulhollandraceway.org Here is a bunch of guys that race on Mulholland Hwy and shun our area. Probably much safer nowadays. Please lets not forget the good old days and ones to come. It's never too late until you're dead.

Re: Update Time!
quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Originally posted by Mr9146 Dave, et. al I talked to Arnie this afternoon and told him you were spinning yarns about the Mulholland days. He laughed, but he did give me a few details that I thought I'd throw out there. 1) The chopped, square-bumper 911 shown in the picture that started this thread began its life as A REAL 73 RSR!! It came from a local race team and Arnie brought it back to life and made it into what you see in the picture. It had a FACTORY-built 2.8RSR motor with high butterfly injection...back then. Looking back he's a bit sorry, but back then nobody gave a crap. 2) The guy who owned it back then still owns the car. Arnie tried to buy it back from him in the last year or so, but the guy has a death grip on it and won't let it go. However, it is being stored properly - on jack stands in a garage, covered, and parked next to a Ferrari TR. Just thought you'd like to know... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Someone's on drugs, Arnie would never say it was a real RSR, it is composed of several cars none of which is a factory RSR. It would be cool if it were a real one. It did not come from a local race team and Arnie had the car completely different from what you see in the picture. I put the 2.8 RSR motor in it and most of the modifications, not Arnie. He had it in a different color and everything else except for the sloped roof I'm the guy that still owns it and Arnie never contacted me or asked to buy it back. However, I do have a death grip on it. It is garaged and parked next to a Testarossa. |

My own correction, Jerry Fairchild modified the Mechanical Fuel Injection pump for the Carrera not Danny Mclaughlin of AIR. Sorry for the oversight.

When I first contacted you last year via email to find out who your website belonged to. I had a feeling it was you but not 100% sure. As I mentioned to you for years there was some confusion with a lot of guys as to your last name. Some thought it was Baxter not Banning. Other's only knew the name Chris B. Many of the Mulholland guys didn't eagerly give out names because of the cops or used pseudonym's which was smart. My friend Doug reminded me of a lore story about you. Doug stated "remember that silver Porsche with the tail on it. The guy who owned it was Chris Baxter and he lived on Mulholland near Beverly. Rumor had it the car was registered in his moms name so if it got impounded she could go get it without a hassle" I just laughed knowing the truth but figured this is how legends get started and gain speed. I sunk Doug's boat when I sent him a link to the Mulholland thread here. He got very excited when he saw the old pictures and cars. He recognized your car immediately. Doug was so jazzed that he drove up to Grandstands just for old times sake. He called me after his 13 plus years absence from Mulholland and said "we need to start going back up there. What happened?" Why do we not go up there anymore?" My response was- life happened and the Mulholland times we knew are no longer. Mulholland isnt dead its just different now. Dougs answer was "neither are we".

Anyone know who the Mulholland Raceway Org website belongs to? I have this feeling it is someone from the 90's crowd who started it. When the site first went up there were some good stories, cool graphics, first hand accounts, Valley lore etc that touched really close to Mulholland home.
I visited it a few years ago and went thru the guestbook which at the time was a few hundred posts. There was a lot of name dropping and yester-year stuff. I stopped visiting when the password prompt riddle went in.

Jeff, thanks for reaffirming that I was successful in not letting my name become public knowledge back then. It seemed a good idea at the time.
There is some interesting truth to your friend Doug's story. Beverly is almost a stones throw away from my hilltop to the east and I used to race around in my mom's 1973 911t(mechanical) so that if I ever got caught the cops wouldn't harm it and it would be easy to get out of impound. Lucky for me, that never happened. I never had a car impounded. I still have the old 911 and it was upgraded to S years ago. What can I say, I just love 911s. Thank you Dr. Porsche. |
