The image below is NOT a photo! It is a portion of a full simulation program by Tom_Pabst@pabstracing.com of Riverside International Raceway. Tom is recreating RIR in simulation
as accurately as possible.

We need YOUR assistance. If any of you have any still photos, color or black and white from
ANY angle of the track or even old video/movie footage Tom would like to see them. He is using them to accurately rebuild RIR as it was at the end of the RIR era.

Once finished we will all be able to 'drive' and 'race' on the newly constructed simulation of RIR.

There are a few RIR tracks that can be driven on via your X-BOX or other programs but I call attest from 'driving' on several different versions at Tom's shop that none have remotely come close to the original.

So with the lack of a correct version of the old RIR Tom has taken it upon himself to re-create the RIR that we all remember and love.

Note that he has included the correct corner worker stations, the old snackbar inside turn 6, even the correct placement of the Union 76 ball(s) and telephone poles with speakers attached. Once finished it will be a identical to RIR as is possible.

Send anything of interest direct to Tom at the e-mail address listed above. Code it RIR or Riverside.
All info is appreciated.

Thank you,
Ron Cortez

Well, if he's gonna "recreate" RIR, then he needs to bury tires in the apexes of each turn 2/3 of their height into the ground and parallel to the radius of the turn and paint them alternately red and white. The only drivers who cheated those turns were NASCAR because they would rip the bodywork off most anything else.

Rir

Yes, we've spoken at length about those 1/2 buried tires. Actually, many if not all were removed in the later years. Too bad certainly kept people honest about staying on the track!

Loaded up Toms email with some really good ones.

I think the tires went away after CanAm died out. Could you imagine a runoff in one of those or the older cigars and Elva's

The Nascar stockers would just keep going. You cant stop a train. Loved those Daytonas and Superbirds with the high wings.

Bet a dollar a couple of the Mulholland Guys are in that crowd? Any takers?

Probably a couple more Mulholland guys here. That could be Dave B's Cockroach
and somebodies parents Custom Cruiser out for a day at the track. "Mom I swear I didnt take the wagon out"

Rir

Some other stuff sent to Tom,

Found a diagram showing the 60's and 70's configurations of RIR along with the event camera locations.

Of course we must have the big boys in the big plastic cars too. Reminds me of Jackie Stewart selling AFX slot cars in the 1970's on TV.

917 on the course

It was all good until they closed Riverside. Ontario was the wakeup call. Should have seen it coming.

Cool stuff. Would this possibly be a plug-in to Grand Prix Legends? I have a few umm... hundred photos. Actually, probably closer to a 1000. Somewhere I have an in-car sequence I shot from the right seat of a 512BB at a FOC event.

Is he going to make cars as well? If so, may I suggest a Renault LeCar or Alliance. We could have a virtual Mulholland IROC! Maybe if I ask real nice he can build in a cheat to put a nitrous bottle behind the rear door panel of a LeCar and wire the solenoid to the hi-beam switch on the column. Not that anybody did that sort of thing you understand.

Cheers,
Kurt O.

Nah, Curt, who would do such a thing?? BTW, anyone going to the Historics at Laguna? I am trying to relive my youth, but Dave is taking my car up on Thursday so I am stuck riding in a Civic. Not that it's a bad thing with modern comforts and all.

Rir

IF you think it was addicting the first time. You should run
RIR on that thing. Don't figure on going anywhere for about 5 hours.

Dang, RIR was a fun track to drive.

Too Tall: You Will Be Able To Run All Of The Modern And Older Race Cars From Other Programs. Tom Can Tell You Exactly Which Cars Will Be Usable. However, I Don't Recall Anyone Having Created An Alliance Sym Race Car. Lol.

Tom Has The Ability To Change Engines In Different Cars Chassis Plus Revs Limits, Etc. It's Amazing. No One Makes A Sym Daytona Prototype, But Tom Has Built One That A Certain Front Running Driver In D.p. Series Uses On A Regular Bases. He Tests On The Sym Before He Attends His Next Daytona Prototype Race! We're Talking Waaay Beyond Your Regular X-box Game Here.

It's about as disparate as jumping from an Appliance cup car to a DP at RIR..

originally posted by jeff hail : Could be Dave B's cockaroach sitting there.

I had to do a double take and thought it could, but wrong year. Rick drove (what is now my cockaroach) the black 6 and I drove another very similar black 6 with e cams to Riverside for one of the Imsa Races. We did park between 1 and 2 on the infield with some other 914's

The most memorable part of it was that it only took us an hour from los angeles to get to the track! (yeah the red mist was in full force)

I sent them yesterday to Tom but his spam filter is set to high- rejecting emails.

A couple of familiar faces at RIR?

Ron,

My e-mail to Tom also bounced. If needed I could post photos here and then he could snag them that way. I asked him if there was anything inparticular he needed because I have so much it's just not realistic to send everything. And for those of you interested in RIR there is this; (Warning, depressing images!)

http://www.tamsoldracecarsite.net/RiversideToday.html#Today

Actually, the whole site is pretty cool.

http://www.tamsoldracecarsite.net/

The layout is pretty chaotic, but it's kind of fun that way. There are lots of gems on the site and you have to work at finding them. Kind of like a swap meet.

Ciao babies!

I hope that these photos may be useful to Tom.
Photos taken by John Hall, 1980.

Looking at cars coming towards turn 6 from the turn 6 bleachers.

Cars exiting turn 6 taken from turn 6 bleachers.

Turn 7 in backround, back straight in foreground.

Cars coming around turn 7a. Turn 6 bleachers visible in backround.

OK, here are a few I had laying around from 1978, 1980 and 1983.

Looking from 7 north to 6, Can-am 1978. Mike Allen on the left, John Morton on the right.

Turn 6 looking south to the Esses from the TV camera window in the fence. Warwick Brown in the VDS Lola.

South end of pit road looking southwest, 1980. A concession stand on the far side of the front straight and the south end of the front straight grandstands. Bobby Rahal's Prophet.

Reverse angle looking north along pit road. The starters stand is just above Rahal's curly locks (see, it is an old picture!) and the three flagpoles that were at start/finish.

Looking west from the pits. The main grandstand on the far side of the front straight. Cale Yarborough and Al Unser Sr. talking to Mario Andretti.

And here's a .... uh ..... detail shot... uh ... of the turn 6 grandstands. Important to get those ... um ..... details right.

Looking east along the NASCAR straight towards entrance to turn 8. the Camaro is having a bad day. IMSA 1983.

Another .... um ...... "detail shot". You can never have too much detail in a computer sim.

Ciao Babies,

Kurt O.

Banning & TooTall: Yes, these are what Tom requested. Wide angle shots from different angles. Bannings photos of Turn 6 and especially Turn 7, 7a are what he was looking for.
Also, TooTall's pit shot of the F.Straight grandstands was very much needed as well.

Even the shot of Les Lindsey's Camaro allows a shot of how much grass there was
between the outside of turn 8 and the g.rail.

Thanks, I'll see why the msgs are bouncing back from Tom. Will let you guys know.
Again, thanks.
RC
