Ventura looked awesome. I regretted not going until late last year, about an hour before it closed on sunday. This year I was in Mexico city.
Now you are having a hot rod meet. You do all the fun stuff when I am away. Harveyville, Kansas until sunday.

I still have not seen Radu's car in person.

Went up to Truckstop at 815 tonight. Wasn't sure if anyone was coming so what the hell. Ended up just me. Not a car in sight all the way to Beverly Glen. One car going the opposite direction all the way to Encino Hills. Got to Ventura Blvd and it looked like the Policeman's Ball. Helicopter in the distance with night sun. Two tone sedans all over Ventura Blvd. Anyone know what was going on?

Hey Jim! Good to see you back on the thread.

Everyone... Myself and Radu are planning a German Invasion of Bob's Big Boy tomorrow (Friday) night at their weekly classic car shindig. We're going to try to get there around 2:00 to 3:00 in the afternoon to catch some prime (or ANY for that matter) parking spots. Please join us if you are available and you feel like altering the perceptions of some American muscle hot rodders.

Dave, is your car up and running? Banning, where is that RSR?! Of course, my appearance will be dependent upon my splitting work early, but it shouldn't be a big deal.

Be ready to be shunned by the V8 disciples! (always the antagonist)

Jeff, the book “French Kiss of Death” (awful title!) describes how they just chopped up the GT40 to be used as a camera car for the Le Mans movie. Apparently it was quite awful to drive. They never made a “spyder” version, at least as a race car. I’m sure there must be a GT40 replica cut as a spyder somewhere though.

For both historical purposes as well as enthusiast/car building purposes, I wonder if it would be possible for this information to converted to pdf files and posted/distributed. You’d have to be comfortable with that; it seems like this stuff was not “top secret” and I can’t imagine it would be any type of copy right violation. I own two old 911s, and have been fascinated by the factory effort with these cars for over 20 years. Please consider this.

Again. Sorry, it’s taken quite a while to read this whole thread. Where did this quote come from? It’s a great quote.

I’d like to my thanks to all involved for sharing their anecdotes of a special time. To me, it seems quite amazing, the story of Mul. Drive. At a time when drag racing and hot rods (in the more conventional sense) were king, there was an underground community of dedicated and rebellious road racers tackling “their track.” You guys helped to preserve a culture of turning in both directions, of driving Datsun 510s, Ford Capris, and other cool cars at a time when most kids wanted to go stoplight to stoplight. When people are building cars and adding crash protection to drive a particular road, it’s apparent there is a dedication, a fire, and a love for the place and the task at hand.

Probably a good idea to print that out and take it with you to show the Rodders
that Big Boy has approved the Porsche's.

If anyone gives you a hard time ask them "if they ever noticed Big Boy has breasts"? Guaranteed to sway attention and get a laugh.

I really don't think there's a whole lot of authority of what kinds of cars are there. Last time I was there I saw a 914 and an Ariel Atom.

Only 1 that I can recall. Blue hood, white body with two blue stripes down the rear.

A LITTLE QUICK SEARCH REVEALS THERE WERE MORE THAN ONE GT 40 CONVERTABLE. A RED #1 CAR WON THE 12 HOURS OF SEBRING WITH KEN MILES AND LLOYD RUBY AS DRIVERS. THIS AFTER GURNEY RAN OUT OF FUEL AND WAS DQ'D FOR PUSHING HIS RACE CAR ACROSS THE FINISH LINE.

ALSO FOUND A PHOTO OF A #10 CAR THAT RACED FOR A WHILE IN EUROPE BEFORE HAVING IT'S TOP REPLACED RE-MAKING IT A COUPE AGAIN. THIS PHOTO IS OF A SCALE MODEL OF THE SEBRING WINNING CAR.

I stand corrected, although the #1 is clearly not a spyder

From the aforementioned book, regarding the camera car:

... a Ford GT40 that had been put out to pasture by John Wyer was purchased by Solar (Productions, McQueen's film company) and modified in England to accommodate several cameras.

The top of the coupe was sliced off and it was converted to open-cockpit configuration. The car was then handed over to Gaylin Schultz, a Hollywood film technician who specialized in fabricating special effects paraphernalia.

A camera mount was affixed behind the cockpit in the center of the rear deck, onto which a rotating35-mm Arriflex could be bolted. Fitted with special gyroscopic adapters and powered by tanks of compressed air secured in the cockpit, the mount allowed camera operator Alex Barbey, sitting in a left side passenger seat and wearing a helmet and fireproof suit, to pan smoothly and follow a fast-moving 917 or 512 through a full 180-degree approach-and-pass sequence. With a set of controls and a small shaded television screen mounted on the dashboard Barbey could see what he was filming as he operated the camera.

A second mount could be positioned on top of the left door to allow Barbey to shoot with a swivel-mounted 35-mm Mitchell camera with Panavision lenses.

Operating complex cameras such as these was a difficult job under normal circumstances. Strapped into a race car doing 150 mph, at times in the rain, complicated the chore considerably.

The radical modifications made to the GT40, and the weight resulting from adding camera and other equipment needed to operate them, detracted considerably from it's (sic) handling. In fact, it made it downright diabolical in high-speed curves.

Having driven the 908 camera car in the race (actual footage shot by Solar during Le Mans), Jonathan Williams was nominated to handle the GT40, but after a week or so at the wheel, and several hair-raising moments, he opted to let Dutch driver Rob Slotemaker tame the unwieldy beast.
That's pretty cool about the Sebring car, a Ford GT "Targa".
