that our union isn't as strong as it once was...duh
bet you did not know that Texas , when it was admitted to the Union, reserved the right to break up in to several smaller counties and leave the USA

Carter was merely incompetent. He honored the Bill of Rights and didn't spend money with reckless abandon like Johnson and Bush. I'll happily forgive mere incompetence.

Oh c'mon! What do you THINK he's gonna say?

"Ladies and gentlemen, the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES!"

"Yada, yada, yada yada yada yada yada yada...this great country of ours, yada, yada, yada, yada, yada, good night and God bless,"

Sound familiar? You expect him to fall on his sword or something?

And you forgot the "King of Incompetent" Ronald Reagan.

Plus, more Reagan admin people (147 I think) were indicted, charged, convicted, or confessed to crimes than any other administration. However, the scorecard is still out on the current Prez.

Whew! Tough crowd.

ps. The fact that you include the word "charged" in your statement, and we are talking about Washington, DC here, makes your statement pretty meaningless. Perhaps you give us a list of just say 70 or 80 of the convicted ones???

Actually, China and Saudi Arabia already own us. China is buying $1 billion per day in US Treasury bills. And you don't think the Saudis are burying all those oil dollars in the sand, do you?

China and Saudi Arabia are our best allies. Tread lightly, all you China bashers. LOL.

Yes, Nick, I am very much aware of that. I am reminded everytime I look out of my window and see the Texas flag flying at the same height as the American one. Only state permitted to do that as far as I am aware.

My point was, who would miss all the VT / NH lefties and their .0035% of GDP if they did leave??? Outside the entiltlement beauracracy that is.

Cheers!

Carter wasn't incompetent at all. He actually was one of our smarter, better educated Presidents. I had the occasion to sit next to one of his cabinet members at a dinner (non-political) long ago. A Nobel Laureate who told me Carter was very smart.

But he was very unlucky--he was President when OPEC decided to turn off the oil spigot to the U.S. And when the Iranians kidnapped the U.S. Embassy.

Reagan was dumb, but lucky: the Arabs turned the oil flow back on, and the Iranians released the hostages. He was also the benefactor of Wolker's Fed policies to stop inflation caused by rising oil prices in the embargo. But he was another tax cut and spender, like Bush Jr, who left a recession to his succesor,
Bush, Sr. , and big budget deficits. Conservative? LOL.

Carter was a nuclear physicist. No doubt a brilliant man. Sadly, intelligence and leadership are not necessarily linked.

By the way, despite being a nuclear physicist, Carter never pronounced the word "nuclear" correctly. Amusing.

Has any SOTU speech really been that groundbreaking? It's a big dog and pony show, no matter the president and no matter the subject. Wasn't Nixon the first one to actually go to the Hill and make the speech before Congress? I think before then the POTUS just wrote it up and sent it over to the Hill. Before tv, it was just a mundane Constitutional formality. Now it's a big political much ado about nothing. I can't stand to watch any of them, just because of the ridiculous interruptions for applause at the end of every other sentence, though I suspect this one might have fewer such interruptions.

If I were in his shoes, I would have a hard time mustering the courage to take the stage.

But I'm not, and he has a secret weapon. Whatever he says, all Republicans will agree.

In the Bizarro world, that is true.

But in the real world, of course, the exact opposite is true. Bush has to be the president most disliked by the members of his party (both the general public/voters and elected officials) in a long, long time.

That is proven by his incredibly low favorable ratings, and by the distance that most Republicans running for office put between them.

On a smaller scale, I've sure read a lot of posts here by Republicans who say they disagree with Bush on lots of major issues (like spending, budget, immigration, etc. etc. etc.)

Well, the list is quite extensive...and a few of them have been co-opted by the current admin.

Did you ever research the Reagan admin and the dealings that surrounded it? Fascinating stuff. Way better than what happened during Nixon.
