First of all a Billion would own you and you wouldn't own it. It would be a full tme job just managing it.

As for the nicities..

I would maintain a home & residence in a NO Income tax state, that was favorable to spoons.
I would spend the dinero on a home in the Moncetio, CA area (4000 sq ft) . Next to Oprha would be nice with an ocean view.

I would have a Crown Vic with driver & bodyguard?
I would fix my 911S and possibly buy a 58 Speedster.

No Boats, No Aeroplanes, No exotic island getaways.....no ski Chalets. If I wanted to go there I would rent.

One can only eat so many steak and lobster dinners everyday.

In the end material things don't really matter.

I would utilize the entire billion to fund groups who combat organizations that foster religious base hate and oppression. That alone would do the most good for the most people.

Wrong!

$50m house in London
$50m house in Sydney
$50m house in New York
$50m house in Toyko
$50m house in Paris
$50m house in Milan
$50m house in Geneva (on the lake!)

...so that's $350m.

A set of cars for each city will take you to $20m or so, just for the basics.

A jet is $100m, a mega yacht another $250m (granted, paid in installments over the course of the vessel's build). A decent wine collection for your 7 houses will be another $20m.

So now we're up to $730m without even blinking an eye or trying very hard at all.

Add top end stereo gear and artwork for each house and you're up to $830m without doing anything to extravagent like jewllery etc.

Add another $100m for a vast collection of rare cars and you're up to $930m. The remaining $70m will cover running expenses for the cars, yacht, plane and staff.

It's very easy to spend a billion, if you know how.

I'd go into the money lending business. I'd only lend small amounts of money and only to guys with hot chicks. The loans would be secured against the hot chicks who have to stay with me and help with the 'other business' until the loan was paid off. The 'other business' would be my rapidly expanding porn empire which would then generate more money to further extend the lending business. The surplus would be used to fund the brewery and distillery. Once the brewery and distillery were up and running then I'd set up the ammunition factory.
Or maybe I'd just buy a church with a dodgey roof and get sammy to join...

aerkuld, you got that all wrong
pimping and loansharking is all very tricky and time intensive stuff
read : constantly dealing with punks owing you money and trying to stiff you on debt they owe you, as well as dealing with b1tches and h0's that will try to test you and your pimp hand...

You'll risk being ripped off, scammed, or full on robbery by a low life... that is , if the cops don't throw your ass in jail for some kind of vice violation..

with 1 billion bucks... you have no time for that, you'de be to busy counting your money.

1 million would go a long, long way where I live.

I couldn't stop working, but I could pay off the house and live pretty damn comfortably working part-time... doing something I'd enjoy. Probably do real estate and work selectively.

Spider Robinson had a good theory in one of his books...

Everyone is gonna need a doctor. Find a good student who wants to be one but has financial barriers. They can do community work when you don't need 'em for anything. Same with lawyer(s), engineers, architects, etc. When you are out of professions/trades that you need services from, then a general scholarship fund for people who have no other scholarship/grant/etc options, and then on a merit base only. This would take $25 mil or so probably, the general fund could be made self sustaining.

I would build the house that I have drawn up, and then build a large shop with an attached mans room... Then I would purchase and restore the following:

Black 356 convertible w/maroon interior and polished Fuchs.
Silver 550 w/ red interior Black Fuchs.
Silver 914-6 six with black fuchs.
Silver 1968 911 Soft window targa with black/silver fuchs.
Black 88 Carrera Targa
Black 86 928S
Daily driver would be a Black monster 914-6 twin turbo with g50 conversion.
Second daily driver would be a silver Cayman S with maroon interior....

Then I would try out Tabbys steak and lobster diet....

Damn...better go buy a lottery ticket. My fantasies no longer involve cars, but a home pool hall, filled with various sizes & types of tables would be nice. Bar box, 9', for pool, a heated billiards table with slate kept at a constant temp, a snooker table, etc. Oh...with a sound system I control...no TV. Then I'd hire a top level instructor for private lessons.

Yep...to each his own "if I were a rich man" fantasy. But then, in many ways, I consider myself already rich...

I'd shoot for a widely diversified, and as secure as possible, portfolio with a target yield, after taxes, of around 3%.

Then I would do the best I could with that $30M annual yield, including taking risks in tech, energy and medical start-ups, to make the world a bit of a better place via 1) employing people so they can also financial enrich themselves and their families; 2) development of new processes, products and technologies that would help people; and 3) making a personal profit on these risks so I could continue the process.

Boring.

Unless by "taking risks in tech, energy and startups" you mean "start up taking risks with high tech hookers and blow mixed with energy drinks".

Then it's cool!

I'd take 10% of the $30M as my personal salary. There's room in there for some "fun" stuff.
