Yeah my wife used to always reassure workers/delivery people/strangers that the dog was safe.

Used to piss me off.

She also does this stupid thing when making an appointment with workers, "well Tuesday from 9-1 I have this meeting then at 3 I need to get the kids and will be gone till 4 etc...."

That one makes me nuts and she never seems to understand why.

My doorbell rings about 3-5 times a week and I never answer it. If it's a delivery, they just leave it there. If I need to sign for it, I'm expecting it. If it's proselytizers or peddlers, I don't want to talk with them. I wonder if my not answering the door would tempt someone to try to break in. That would be a big mistake, since I'm always at my desk near the door and have a SIG P220 as one of my grab guns.

I have a long standing policy of simply shooting anyone I see in our neighborhood that I don't recognize. There are enough large dogs and free running cats loose that there is never anything left by morning. Granted, I'll occasionaly get the odd cousin, or in-law, or some one else legit that I have not been introduced to, but the neighbors all seem to feel that is an acceptable price for their own added security.

My next door neighbor was burglarized just after he moved in a year ago. Then he got a big dog, a gun, and an alarm system.

A couple weeks ago he was burglarized again, on a Saturday. His alarm system had been down for two weeks and he took his dog to the kennel while he went out of town for the night. A coincidence? I don't think so! Fortunately they didn't find the gun.

The real crappy thing is I may have seen the burglar's car My first instinct when I see a strange car wasn't: "hey, my neighbor's being robbed!" Well it is now!

We have two dogs, a lab and lab mut. I don't think they'd hurt anyone, but I'm not so sure about the mut. I'm thinking a doberman might make a good addition.

I have a sticker on the back door that has an image of a revolver looking up the barrell and it says, "Do you believe in life after death? Trespass here and find out!" It's a little misleading as I don't actually own any revolvers. They would be looking up a semi-auto or a 12 gauge.

I also open the door for strangers holding back my lab/pit mix and acting like I'm having a tough time doing so. That usually keeps any sales calls very short.

She will also sit behind me in the foyer quietly on command but in view so that's good when needed too.

Everyone should have a recue dog for home defense. They are good for the soul and pay back to you way more than they could ever ask.

He eats his lunch at home every day (at random times between calls).

He has called me when I was out of town because I had lights on timers that came on.

My neighbor on the other side is a retired widow.

We have another cop and a firefighter on my street.

We don't have a lot of problems on my street.

what about a home security system? how about a camera that snaps a photo, when you push the door bell?

you get the wrong dog, and your troubles triple.

i am surrounded by stay at home, retired people. you cant burp without someone peeking out thru the mini blinds. i also live in a culdesac. good homes to rob, have multiple exits.

You will be quite a handful as you get older and your memory fades. Of course maybe your aim will as well...

My policy is to shoot the ones that I *don't* see. Those are the ones you need to worry about.

With W moving down here we have had an influx of the people assigned to protect him.

9 so far have moved into the community, 3 in my subdivision.

So far I'm covered front back and on one side.

Steel Security doors for anything that goes outside. Very painful thorn bushes or cacti thoroughly planted under all 1st floor windows. Perhaps some decorative-looking window bars on the 1st floor.

A moat of fire would also be super cool.

Dogs are a nice deterrent, but not a guarantee. If they want to get in, they will. I have 2 big dogs - 95lbs and 75lbs and it didn't stop the little f-ers that broke into my house. They tried the "distract them with food" technique and it didn't work. I wish it had... they then resorted to beating my dogs with copper pipes. Dogs are now fine, although they flip out whenever a stranger comes on the property. Worst part of it is, my neighbor watched the whole thing - from her front yard! I'm typically not one to stereo-type, but she's an older Chinese lady that has the "don't get involved" mentality. I still try to be nice to her, but it's awfully hard sometimes.

They caught the perps, a "gang" of under 18 yr olds. So they got a nice slap on the wrist, some community service and that's it. They had hit over 70 houses in the area, and had stolen tons of guns, including a few automatics. They had also stolen over 50 cars. One of the kids is now over 18 and I'm still very tempted to collect what insurance didn't cover, from his hide.

BTDT. Two small towns I lived in never really wanted me there. F**k your little American towns.

Although I can't stand the city I live in, I would meld in well in a 100 others nearby. If I leave the blanket of security and familiarity of where I was born and raised, I'm either shunned or living with dirtbags.

Or both. Nothing like being shunned by a dirtbag.

however..2 rules for me..
don't mess with my wife..and leave the dogs be..
