My Daughter's Cat "Rascal" is gone

This was the greatest cat ever, my daughter rescued Rascal when she was at college in San Francisco, he was abanded in Oakland. I was BBQing and he got out. We found out 4 days later that Rascal was killed most likely by a coyote. A neighbor a few blocks away found Rascal's collar and a trail of blood leading to his back yard, there he found lots of black fur and Rascals leg. I'm very depressed this cat was like a best friend

Condolences to your family.

Not many outdoor cats in these parts. All of my neighbors who owned a cat and let them outside are now without. Same story for small dogs.

We would let Rascal out in the day time when we were home, he never strayed. We would call him and he would always come running. It was my fault that he got out that dreadful night, not only am I very said, but extremely guilty. Thanks for caring.

If their is any consolation, at least we have closure and we don't have to wonder if Rascal
is out there lost, stolen or ?

Coyote hunting should be legal...(edit) Lucky for me there is sheep grazing in these parts. Coyotes don't last long.

They were here first.

It's the hunting of wolves that has allowed the population of coyotes to explode. So- do we stop hunting wolves or kill the coyotes?

We lost a favorite cat to either a coyote or an owl, back when we were living in the foothills north of Glendale. She disappeared and looking for her, for weeks, was bad. So knowing for sure that Rascal is dead is sort of a blessing, even though it doesn't seem like one.

Her name was Nikki (named after Nikki Lauda, this was in the 80s).

Edit: my wife reminds me that we also lost Bilbo the cat to coyotes, in the same area.

Kill both when they aren't where they belong. Portland voters outlawed the hunting of Cougars with dogs in Oregon. Now cougars being spotted in places near children. It's only a matter of time...

But what the heck? The Cougars were here first, right?

Hunting of coyotes is legal everywhere isn't it ??? My general policy is I shoot at both of them if I run into them when I'm hunting...( they both make great coats).

On a up note, Idaho just re-opened hunting season for wolves

Sorry to hear this.

Rascal looks like our 'Mr Zoey'

See if you can find another 'little friend' from the shelter when you are ready.

They can, yes.

Like most animals, they're generally afraid of humans, but if one is close enough to human inhabited areas to be used to them and sees a baby or small child outside, they might very well decide to go after it.

Habitat encroachment does things like that.

Exactly...in Urban areas, they lose their fear of man. Some fools actually feed them. A crawling baby playing on a lawn...yes, I could see coyotes going for such "food"...they take lambs of the same weight.

shouldn't we live in areas without cayote? Or should we allow to shoot/kill them? I see cayotes at my work several times and wonder if they ever attack human. Saying such things I can see I become animal protection's enemy.

Sorry to hear that. Black cats are the coolest I think. We had one outdoor black cat that lived to be 18, She could get in the barn at night though.
