some of the media is saying that publishing is not making money and they are looking for this device to change that(reason why Steve Jobs was able to get them on board, the porsche analogy is a good 1.....1 of the things I like about Apple is the Aluminum Chassis and the OS, this kind of High quality is hard to find, I've paid a lot more & got a lot less. I believe Apple's "trick" was caused actually by accident and then grew into a monster, ( not letting information out on there products), as you can see the minute they come out with a product it gets copied which leads to a lot of speculation which may not be met. Fanaticism comes from wanting to share what you know

Gonna pass on the maxipad this round.
Just like the iphones and ipods, version 3.0 are gonna be something to talk about.

I too thought that this was a fail.

no flash -- so what it sucks up my cpu and makes my fans go into hype drive, good bye
no usb ... interesting, however, this is not a first for apple. iMacs did away with stone age floppies.
no camera -- bummer, would have liked to have real voip features.
no storage ... this is gonna suck worse than it does on the iphone.
Apple 4 chip -- expecting it to be better than qualcomms snapdragon and possibly an atom
hand holds -- hmmm, tough to roll up with like a good book maybe.
no desktop OS -- 50/50 on this one. If you build it, they will come. So, bummer Adobe is not on board this round.
no stylus and recognition -- looks like the Newton and Palm have made this a reality. Handwritting recognition would have got my $500 for this. I want to talk notes like I normally do. I don't want to type everything!

I do see this being a carpc type of thing
Just gotta figure out how I'm going to mount a 10" screen though

So when is this apple (intel chip) vs all other intel chip pc war gonna end?
I never hear or read people beothching about the Vaio being expensive?

Get over it folks!

Some people don't want to try to figure out how to setup a bios,
nor figure out if the psu is gonna match, nor if my ram is gonna match,
nor read a manual to figure out where this plug fits onto the mobo,
nor have to google why there isn't a straight answer for "black screen of death with cursor" (re-install does not count!),
nor do people want to worry where they put their product key so they don't have to worry about if the dam hive is gonna load so that you can pull the key through some software called keyfinder that is not even made by Microsoft,
nor want to worry if their spybot, adbot, virus, phishing blockers were updated 5 minutes ago,
nor want to think about how much cpu is being sucked up by those programs that make you feel like you are wearing 3 condoms,
nor many other things ....

However, there are people that do like to tinker and have fun going through catalogs looking for the right part. Many Apple folks do at times wish they could swap out their cpu for a faster one, but we do know that you eventually have to upgrade the mobo and ram to get the same responsiveness as a new setup would provide.

So, let's face it, there are 2 kinds of folks.
1.) those who want to drive it like there is no tomorrow
2.) those who want to fix it like there is no end

Both of who, get just as much fun out of what they are doing!

And just couldn't help.
Driving my SC is like using XP. I always have to keep my eye on the oil gauge and in SP my eyes on those nasties.

I have a Kindle. I love it, mainly because of its size, and how long the battery lasts. I travel all the time, and read a lot.

I will pass on this as I have on ever Apple product with the iPod being the exception. I have a couple of old nano's, that I use Media Monkey to manage the music on, I hate iTunes.

Oh well, I guess I'm not trendy.

what is really interesting is that the rumor mill on zdnet is discussing the very high end, star chip designers that worked on this thing...

they conclude the goal was to hardwire "unbreakable" DRM into the system on a chip CPU...

No way this can replace a notebook.
With no multi-tasking, it leaves much to be desired. For example:

1. Not very supportive of the current instant messaging apps, since they typically require two apps to be up and running at the same time.

2. My college professor friend wants a reader where he can cut and paste something from an e-book into a word processor for a paper he's working on. It probabably can be one but - you have to cut and paste the words, CLOSE the book app, OPEN the word processor, and then paste the block of text. Not as efficient at ALT-TAB, especially when it is necessary to move multiple blocks of text time and again.

3. From the business point of view, you need to have many apps open at once - like email, a spreadsheet, putty, and other portals into different apps.

Hate to say it, but Apple really missed it on this one -- they should have listened to the complaints about the iPhone - especially the multi-app issue.

Who wants a big, glorified iTouch? Maybe fun for little Johnny, but even he will get frustrated when it isn' easy for him to plagarize his papers....

For a little more $$, you are better off getting a MacBook Pro (I have one), or a regular PC laptop.

The iPad - something that Apple things EVERYONE wants, but nobody really needs. <-- not a good way to sell product, IMHO.

Was discussing this with a coworker just now and when I told him no Flash support and no multitasking he told me I was "making it up, no way they would be that stupid".

I think that will be a common reaction during test drives.

The cut-n-paste-between-apps task your prof wants to do does not require multi-tasking. It just requires applications to open and close very quickly, and to save their state when they close.

However, other things would require multi-tasking - for instance, reading an e-book while listening to music. I think multi-tasking would be very desirable to have. This is pretty damned obvious, Apple definitely knows it.

And I find it very odd and illogical that iPad wouldn't have multi-tasking. The iPhone OS is capable of multi-tasking, as the hacked iPhones prove. The A4 chip has more than enough horsepower for it - its is probably 2X as powerful as the TI chip in the Palm Pre that multi-tasks very well.

So, the OS and the CPU are able to multi-task, people will want multi-tasking, and Apple knows they want it . . . I suspect that the iPad will have multi-tasking - maybe not at first, but before too long.

I watched the video conference on Apple's website & as far as I know Steve Jobs didn't say it wouldn't multitask, it would be just like him to burn the short sellers, he has been pissed at! Just saying, Dunno LOL ...

Dude, my co-workers' macs crash ridiculously often. They aren't that good. Seriously.

I started on a Apple IIC and also had a PowerMac. Got a Dell and never looked back.
