Never been an issue for me in CA. Willing to pay the price if needed... I have received a parking ticket for no front plate (when I left the car on the street overnight once), but not a moving violation.

I got a ticket going through a road check for no front plate..$45 fine. I had no plate on a Saleen and had a hard time getting it inspected, all of this was in Va. North Carolina doesn't care.

I don't have a front plate on the 911, never have. One fix it ticket, which I paid, otherwise no fuss in 8 years, half in CA and half in OR. I think it depends on your city.

Also the time it takes to go from green to red magically can shorten too! Several towns in NC tried that one, didn't go over well! Problem solved by making it so that whoever puts up the stoplight camera's only gets 10% of the revenue. They're losing money that way, and magically they went away...

That being said, I have both plates on my Titan and on my wife's T5 Wagon. Neither vehicle has tinted windows. Why? Because these two infractions are probably the two most used vehicle codes for enforcement stops in California. Its called a pretext stop. The police don't care about your front plate or your tinted windows. It is simply a legal reason to stop you so that a further investigation can be initiated. When I go out, I like to have a drink or two. While driving home from Newport Beach at 2 am, I don't want to give anyone, any justifiable reason to contact me. Which is the same reason that I set the cruise control on 65. FYI, .08 bac looks the same on your driving record as .16 bac. And you would be AMAZED if you knew how little alcohol puts the average sized man right at .08. (BTW, I don't have front plates on my sports cars because I could care less about getting stopped while hauling AZZ)

Over here (in Belgium) we are obligated to have two but they only issue the rear one. You have to get the one in the front yourself, it is not an official plate. On the 911, I have a stickerplate. They sell'em like that over here, perfectly legal.

My wife's new Infinity G-35x came with a bracket to mount to the front bumper for a tag. Since Oklahoma does not require a front tag I put the bracket in the attic. My 911 has tinted windows and no front tag. I have driven it in 20 or 25 states from California to North Carolina. I just last month I drove it to the Chicago area. I have not ever been bothered in any state. No stops, no tickets.

The reality is if a cop wants to pull you over, he's going to pull you over anyway. They can always find (or fabricate) some "justification" for it whether someone has a front plate or not, tinted windows or not, etc. Yes a lawyer probably can work more with a probable cause of "uhh, the guy looked suspicious" versus "I was stopping them for a burned out taillight/tinted windows/no plate/whatever" that's more tangible, but the reality is if they want to stop you, they're going to stop you regardless and a lawyer might or might not be able to argue that it was an unreasonable stop (never mind the 50 pounds of pot and the trunk full of Uzis and the dead body they find during after they stop you). they're going to bother pulling you over it's because you've done something to draw attention to yourself in the first place so it really doesn't matter. There's no point in letting yourself be scared into handing "the man" an easy way to throw more tickets your way either via red light/speed cameras or via laser. Don't drive like an a-hole, use a V1, pay attention to your surroundings and you should be fine. Not too many cops are going to pay you much attention for something trivial like a burned out taillight or a missing front plate unless you're doing something else anyway - or unless they're VERY bored.

I bought my Audi from a dealer who attached the front plate with two sheet metal screws through the bumper... The easy fix was to buy a new front bumper cover plate painted to match car for $75. The car has been running sans front plate for years now with zero hassles - if I get a fix it ticket I have the plate and original cover that I can swap in for verification of fix. | ||

In Los Angeles, they drive around at night and if your car is on the street with no front plate, the meter maids give you a ticket. I received 4 in one week from the same person at 2 and 3am in the morning.

I got pulled in Orygun for no front plate. Cop told me it was ~$200 fine. (no ticket - don't know if they can enforce that one for out-of Staters) -- I expect that it's so expensive there because they value safety so.

I've been pulled over in Oregon twice for "courtesy stops" (State Patrol both times) Once for no front plate (VW Rabbit), the second for a burned out headlight - this was in the middle of the afternoon, and yes, he did indeed take the opportunity to check out my belongings very carefully.

A busted headlight or no front plate certainly does not constitute PC for a vehicle search. I hope you didn't consent. I would have politely told him to pound sand.
