I never saw it happen for that reason, but they used what looked like a cricket paddle with swiss cheese holes drilled in it.

Same here. Must have been standard issue in those days. They called it a "spat" board at my school. The holes were supposed to make it hurt more; all I know is the pattern on my ass stayed for a couple of days.

This is awesome! I printed it out. My 5th grade daughter does a current events report each week. I showed her this and she laughed. I suspect it will be a 5th grade classic.
