Terrific photography. Late last night was surprised to see the classic Endless Summer ('66) on some cable channel. Made me think how far today's photographers and surfers have come, amazing talent and brave!!

Groovy Scott!

You can thank Tweez for the thread....and I agree....(next to the DOG & MUSIC thread of course) it's the best thread on PPOT!

Yes surf photography has indeed come a loooong way. It's incredible what can be - and what is being done now.

Regarding "The Endless Summer" - that classic will always be....well a classic. Bruce Brown had his own way of creating a movie which above all translated into entertainment. That is what set that movie apart from most others - the writing and creativity in production. Of course the overall theme was a very unique one - groundbreaking in many ways....

There's another movie he made about motorcycle riding you may enjoy called "On Any Sunday". Here's one of my fav. segments:

BTW....the soundtrack is by the same group from "The Endless Summer" - The Sandals. And you'll recognize the narration by Bruce Brown....

I hope you'll get a chance to watch it one day. Thanks for your post!!!

Change The Subject is another of John Lynch's films with lush images.
On Any Sunday was so timely for me as I raced motocross on CZs & rode trails with my Dad on a Greeves. An Endless Summer poster graces my home office.

Talk about freedom rides.....ha!

The reason that photo appeals to you - is it is appealing to your inner soul - which recognizes the concept of being a free spirit. Not everyone has the spirit, which is a common denominator amongst true soul surfers.

I remember it well "Secret Spot" and "Mafia House"

Larry: Cool - you were obviously around in the "good old days"! Before those friggin' beach tolls! Back when you could drive on the beach at night.

Here's a pic of the Mafia House (west side) - not sure if you can still recognize it - it's part of a huge condo now - in fact it's surrounded by 2 condos so no longer stands out like it used to.....

Were you one of the Daytona guys? Pat Altes, the Crouch brothers, Ronnie Ranie, etc.?

^^^ On Any Sunday. Surely remember that film but never realized Bruce Brown narration in both... well goes for his production. No one cooler than McQueen. Vintage Baja scenes. Neat. (Back in that era I had quite a few dirt bikes including a Rickman with a Zundap 125.) Anyhow, drifting away and 'thank you' for the great stuff here. S.

Edit: Abroad - John Lynch. +1

I was the student projectionist one year at our high school for old man Bud Brown. He congratulated me on the least number of film splices ever ..hah.

That pic that Baz put up of the two nekid girls carrying the long board looks to me like the clothes-optional beach @ Santa Barbara. Fun days ..

Another nice shot of your son Geary! You must appreciate the classic films as much as anyone with your background.

Larry - I know quite a few of the Winter Park crew.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Phew, my hands were sweating watching that John. Wow.

Super nice run! What a great hill, and no cars going either way, wonder if it was closed to vehicles. I hope so with them taking the whole road at will. Neat watching the aero effect at work.

Cheers Richard

I find their choice of lines/speed interesting .. full speed and virtually straight. Our little group did this for many years on Haleakala, but we carved full turns and kept speed in check. Even so, we'd sometimes eat it big time. I destroyed my ACL twice and had to retire until they came up with the Mountain Board rear disc brake system. From that point on, none of us ever wiped out. We also moved to night riding only. Cars can be seen from miles away.

Couldn't place the road. Thought it was Decker or Encinal but looks like is was back in the Angles front range.

Video says "GMR" so I assume that is Glendora Mountain Road.

Guys do this up on Mulholland by the Rock Store. On the one hand they do have some skills, but I have to say that their crossing of the double yellow (unless the road is closed) is rather stupid. You can go faster on a bicycle and stay in your lane, and get pretty much the same sense of exhilaration with much more safety (things like brakes!). The guys on Mulholland do have the sense to go on week day afternoons like Fridays when there are fewer cars and bikes but there are still many blind turns. I am not sure if they cross the 2 x yellow everywhere, though.

You may go faster, but you won't get the same "exhilaration". It's also the point not to have more safety. Who needs brakes?

If you are flying down Mulholland and some idiot crosses into your lane, you need more control. If you can't corner without sliding into the other lane then you need brakes to bleed off a little speed.

They did talk about "air brakes", but I see it as only a matter of time before they end up plastered to the front of a car because they lost control.

I don't see why the bike isn't exciting enough.

It's called "adrenaline junkie". They have to crank down on the trucks on those boards or else they will get speed wobble and will ditch. BTDT. Because the trucks are so tight, it's hard to turn. It also looks like they had spotters on several sections of the road.
