Heads up guys, a big wave paddle in event called the Pe'ahi Challenge went down a while back.

Somehow I missed it from Az, but just came across a replay on the local surf channel. It had some really solid swell and amazing rides going down. Air dropping in big waves. I'm sure ther are some highlights to be found on line. Go find it if you like watching big wave surfing. Happy New Years Cheers Richard |

In the early '70s, we used to drive down to Peahi (after our morning session @ Hookipa) just to sit and watch. We'd try to guess the wave size by how long the wave took to break. A couple friends paddled out one day (a feat in itself), and practically killed themselves. I lived only 3 miles down the coast, so I watched it a lot.

Fast forward 20 years, and the tow-in revolution changed everything. I really have to hand it to the paddle-in guys .. Peahi is terrifying from the water. Of course, these days they have rescue teams in place .. Mikala Jones on a great Peahi wave:

It is amazing, but I'm betting Kelly will be bored with it after a dozen rides. A big part of surfing is reacting and flowing with what the wave decides to throw at you.

I couldn't agree more. Half the allure is the changing conditions, variety of waves, etc. Kelly has board control mastered, nothing to be gained by training on a stable platform.

Watching the news last night and they're talking about potential "Huge waves, possibly 12'-15' ". They show a moving clip of a guy dropping in on an excellent overhead peak. Said it was Manhattan Beach, which is usually just walled close-outs on big waves, so I'm thinking sweet peaky swell.

Up at zero-dark-thirty this morning to head down. Too dark still to check surf cams on Surfline. What do I find?…100 guys in the parking lot and Victory at Sea blown-out mushy storm conditions. Not even worth getting wet for. Maybe I would buy a ticket to play at one of Kelly's Wave surf parks.

Hehe, I dusted off the Mal two days ago and had the time of my life in waist high waves. A little more my style.

Umm, very painful. Remembering a cubic meter = a tonne which is about the same weight as a US ton. That's a lot of weight to be hammered by.
