Brad, we were at Hobsens
R Beach was nice yesterday where we hit as sands was crowded. Trying to clear my schedule for another morning session tomorrow but work is really killing me at the moment. We need to hit Fig Mtn Brewery soon! Ping me off the thread and let's line something up.

![]() From a bud in San Diego... Yesterday as a wave crested in front of me, too small to ride, a pelican dropped from the sky to the left and began gliding along the lip of the wave. It passed about six feet in front of me, I could see the feathers of its wingtips tremble with each touch on the water, feeling it's edge, sending little bursts of water skyward, dancing along the wave like any surfer. The swell lifed me up and I watched the pelican continue the right, following the wave's crest for a good 200 feet, until the wave curled over and she flew skyward. Too cool. I searched surfing pelican on YouTube and there are several vids.

Thanks John. Very appropriate subject for this site!
Pelicans are one of the coolest creatures around. They never cease to amaze me even though I must have seen a million of them in all my years on the coast. They really do use the air currents off the waves to assist in lift and steering. ![]() SAT MARCH 22 4pm- Introductions, Silent Auction, Food&Drink 4:10-Sine Qua Non-Greg Long Directed by Richard Yelland 4:40-Opening Video... 5pm-Connected To The Sea-(A Womens Surf Documentary)-Meet Film Maker Dr. Diana Whehrell-Grabowski Followed by Screening of Film “Connected to the Sea” 5:55- Preview of Future Showing Film “Great Highway” 6pm-Just added...Winner of Best Short Film NYSFF “LUNCHBREAK” 6:10-Dances With Waves Film Maker-Mike Clancy 6:30-Screening of “Dances With Waves” 8pm- One Hundred Miles To The End Film Maker-John Beattie 8:20-Screening One Hundred Miles To The End 9:30 Musical Guests “THE AQUANUTS” SUNDAY MARCH 23 4pm- Introductions, Silent Auction, Food&Drink 4:10- Preview of Great Highway 4:15-Jack McCoy Video 4:20-Just added..Winner of Best Short Film NYSFF- “LUNCHBREAK” 4:25-Opening Video 4:50-Dust. If you open it up, it's like a surfboard with handlebars... or training wheels. But you need to add a skeg.

Though I grew up on the Gulf Coast of FL (flat), I was very active on the East Coast: Sebastian, Vero, Cocoa, et al. We recently bought a small beach "get away" on the East Coast of NC and after a 20+ year hiatus from surfing, I'm getting back into it. For my 45th birthday, my sweetheart treated me to a new 7'-4" WRV thruster. More of a "fun shape", but handles closer to a shortboard than a longboard. Beautifully made.
At this stage of the game for me, it's about catching waves, building confidence, easing back into it, developing my old form, and that's why we opted for a less aggressive shape and size. From paddling, I can already feel soreness in those back and shoulder muscles that have gone unused. Any tips for a once active "old timer" trying to find his old mojo? ![]()

It may not be good for family politics, but put the 7'4" aside for a while and get a 9'6". Then concentrate on a smooth easy paddling style. Start paddling for the wave early, and the rest is easy. And most importantly; don't try too hard just enjoy.
