IMessage is real handy for the iPad. Now my MIL that does not have a smart phone can send a text right to my wife's iPad.

This is REALLY REALLY Getting frustrating:
- Battery life really, really REALLY Sucks -- even in 'standby' mode (no activity at all), I go from 100% charged to 38% charged in less than 8 hours. - I switched email to fetch every hour, and it still won't update with new email. - I keep turning more and more things off, and deleting apps - to no avail. What's the point of having a smartphone if you can't use any smarts because it sucks the battery down quicker than driving a Hummer sucks down gas? I WANT MY OLD iOS BACK!!!!! Grrrrr. -Z-man.

My battery life is poor as well but I can almost get through my entire day on a charge.
I am a heavy user, tons of emails and phone calls all day long. At night it is dead. Hopefully 5.1 will be out soon with some tweaks for better battery life. I am thinking the notifications are the killer as well as location monitoring.

Not sure why your email isn't working better.
Set up a gmail account and have it check your Yahoo account. Then set up a MS exchange account for gmail and Push monitoring of your email, calendar and contacts. Don't forget to backup your contacts first. When gmail sync's, it will erase the phone the first time if you are not careful.

So I should create another 2 email accounts in order to fix the fetch function? It was working for a short time - a couple of days, before it went away again (without me changing anything email related).
As for the battery life -- I did stick my iphone on top of a couple of speaker docks - was sampling some for my garage. But I doubt that would cause the battery to drain so quickly... I suppose I'll have to take a trip to the genius bar this week.... Crazy part - I am a technie - I work in IT, and manage a bunch of storage for all types of systems -- mainframe, AIX, Windows/VMWARE, and even, wait for it -- a MAC XSAN environment! It shouldn't be this difficult to fix the stuff I'm having problems with... -Z-man.

As far as I know, if you want Push notifications, then you have to go the MS Exchange route with gmail being one of the choices if your work does not provide an exchange server.
No idea why the fetch isn't working. Could be a yahoo/ios5 glitch.

My battery life is pretty good after tweaking stuff. Start the day at 100% and I'm 80% now. I turned off push and fetch, just let the mail update manually when I check it. I'm using an ISP and the office Exchange. Turned off notification and location services for apps that I don't care about. Turned wifi off when I'm not at home. Hope you find a solution.

I have an iPhone 3GS which I jail broke with the help of gr8flporsche which I use as a wi-fi hot spot for my ipad1. I'm loathe to upload IOS5 for the j/b issue, but any down side to upgrading the iPad1? I only use it for movies and surfing the net.

So yesterday my battery was back to getting chewed up pretty quick.
Noticed this morning in the Message Center that my Calendar notification was cycling like crazy. I have hundreds or recurring/constantly changing meetings scheduled. Watched it cycle for 20 minutes to no end so just turned off Notification for Calendar and battery life has been good today. 11 hours in and still at 81%.

No way I am downloading IOS5 until there is at least 5.1 or 5.2.

My iPad2 and iPhone4 are working well with iOS5. No issues at all. Battery life unchanged.

iPhone4 and IPad2 running on iOS5 here also, no problems with battery life at all. My phone can run two days without a charge - plenty of use too.

Ok - I WAS a big believer - I drank the Apple juice.
But I gotta ask, are these "advancements" making our lives easier? Sometimes I am amazed by what I can do with my Ipod/Shuffle/Phone/Pad. Other times, I wonder...

Double edged sword.
On the one hand, we can do do much with this technology. In my pocket I have the world wide web, all my email, all my appointments, instant messages to/from family and friends and coworkers, real-time portfolio and market data, music, books, newspapers, the most powerful HP calculator ever made, a pretty good camera and video recorder, a lightmeter, a level, GPS navigation, decibel meter, on and on - it is 1/2" thick and barely larger than a playing card. I can talk to it in one language snd it will translate to another. Tell it to do things and it does them. Write Chinese. Draw a picture. This was the stuff of science fiction not long ago. On the other hand, more capabilities means more responsibilities. I'm expected to be always reachable. There's really no such thing as a day off. No matter where I am, I'm supposed to be as on top of data, events, actions as if I were at my desk. We have just one assistant per six or seven of us. I wouldn't mind being back in, let's say, the 1920s. There were air mail and telegrams. You took weeks to study an issue and make decisions. Right now, a week is a long time; a day or part of a day is more the norm; sometimes minutes. We have vast amounts of data, but it feels like we act on instinct just as much as ever. |

OK - I tweaked it more -- turned email on to fetch only. (was set to manual somehow...)
Turned of basically all of my notifications and locator functions. Will turn them back on as I see fit. We shall see if the phone will last the night. Would be nice if they had a readme.txt to document some of the changes and potential pitfalls with the new release... I guess user friendly and battery friendly are two mutually exclusive items in Appledom. (IE: Turn everything on and that way, most consumers will be happy...) -Z

With CrackBerries it was all about mail. Not a big deal. These days it's about staying connected thru so many channels it's almost unrealistic to try and stay on top of it manually. So fetch has turned to push. Push uses juice. Blame the youth. We curmudgeons are really not the target audience.

Good news! My tweaks worked. It was the locator function that I hadn't turned off which I suspect was consumping battery life. (I really don't need the imdb app, the AP Mobile app, and a bunch of other apps to be tracking my location, do I?)
This morning, my phone it at 98%! (Last charge was around 12 midnight) So I'll start turning on fetches and such as I see the need. I really think this iOS upgrade was pushed out (pun intended) too soon - new features were added, but the drawbacks to those features (ie battery drain) were not considered or properly tested... -Z-man.
