Air show 787

Do you think this was really hazardous or just that the competition wasn't prepared to do it also? (banned at the Farnborough airshow)

I don't know if it was 'hazardous' but put me in the "WOW" column too!

Looks like an incredibly skilled pilot/crew who know the machine very well. Didn't look dangerous to me.

Eddie Allen did a slow roll over the Gold Cup race on Lake Washington in a 707 back in the 50s. Rumor has it that it sold a lot of airplanes.

He practiced that far away from prying eyes. A 1G roll would not spill a drop of water from a full to the brim glass.....but it looked damn impresive. The CEO of Boeing was at the race (along with a half million other folks) & about **** a brick.

The 787 has had me worried about Boeing. Seeing it roll along the runway there I'm thinking Wow, those engines are massive for that plane. ...and then that takeoff... Hooo-Leeee SHEET!

The hard banking with minimal wing flex...

Excellent job, Boeing.

Super cool UAV shots there, too.

I just think about how much fuel that thing must be pumping to those engines. Like water thru a fire hose.

there is a video floating around , of the wing flex test in a hangar at Boeing. They pulled and pulled till the wings were at some ridiculous angle before one finally broke. Just amazing

fwiw, on wing testing; the wings on the B52 could be flexed until touching each other and still not break. ...of course they won't go back to where they began, but still...

You guys realize, of course, that that entire video is computer generated. Don't you?...

Serious?

Question. From a ground guy. As a pilot, is there a huge difference when you fly an empty jumbo jet versus one bringing back a load of tourist from Disney world? I mean loaded heavy.

And therein lies the problem, they broke.
Unlike the B-52 example where they deformed.
Composites aren't very forgiving when pushed past the limit. It's catastrophic failure.

But that's the point: they're supposed to break...it's part of the test. The B52 wings will break as well, past the point where they touch each other.

Boeing breaks all their wings, composite or alloy.
