I bought a new laptop with Win 8.1. That OS just plain sucked. Microsoft considers a "change" an improvement. Like now your car is to be found in the living room. I was glad to upgrade to Win 10. Had to do the mpg codec download, but other than that it is working fine. I would stick with 7, but if you are running 8 I would upgrade to 10.

Years ago, a copy of Office Professional 2000 was given to me. It still works fine on all versions of Windows and I don't have to re-learn every time MS just does a shuffle and calls it "NEW".....

I was able to upgrade. The issue wasn't the key. Still not sure what was wrong. I loaded the "Media loader" and created a USB upgrade drive.

First impression: Cheesy. The same feeling I had moving from Office 2003 to Office 2013. The icons seem flavorless. Spartan.

It does seem to run well, maybe faster. I'm about 1.5 hours into using it.

They killed off Windows Media Center in 10.

Just in case any of you are running PVR's that use it for a back end.

Turns out my Outlook problem is caused by 10. I did some searching and I'm not the only one having sending issues as a result of the "upgrade"

Bug: when trying to open a spreadsheet from a network drive it is reported as corrupt. I can copy to my PC and the sheet opens fine.

I'm not upgrading yet - I see no reason to at this point. I'm seeing all sorts of interesting tidbits on the "features" in 10 such as this:

I am going to wait a while before I upgrade to 10. Think I have until July 2016 before you have to start paying for the upgrade. I am just worried that you will have to pay for everything you already have again and again. I don't like the idea of paying yearly for programs I just purchased outright in the past. Both 7 and 8/8.1 will not allow me to use certain games and programs that I like so I am still using an XP box offline for those. I don't think upgrading to 10 will fix the compatibility issues with those programs.

man, so many freak-out stories.

Thing is, Microsoft is WAY behind the big brother tracking curve. Google/Android, Apple, Facebook... all killing it, and would rather that Microsoft not play in their sandbox of owning people's digital life.

That EULA stuff: As I read it, that only refers to use of MSFT cloud stuff; where they are responsible for holding and giving the user(s) access to cloud based info.

Anyway, I think it funny that Android and Apple fans are dumping on MSFT for doing some of what Android and Apple have been doing for years. ...at least MSFT let's the user select to turn the crap off.

Thanks for the security tip. Had not thought about that. Lots of info out there telling one how to turn it off. Which I did of course. It seems like the kids today have been taught to share EVERYTHING! BIG BROTHER has done well.

We are running Win7. Last night, MS sent/downloaded a bunch of "updates" while I was online.

When it was done, without "asking permission," it just went into shut down mode and put up a message saying "Don't turn off your computer."

I pulled the cable out of the back of it, and let it finish shutting down and (I assume) installing these "updates," then it booted up, then I ran the cleaner, then plugged it back up, then updated AVG and Malwarebytes.

There was some kind of box at the bottom of the window saying to "click here" to read about the updates MS had installed.

The list showed that it had tried to install Windows 10! And failed.

W... T... H? Anyone else heard of this happening?

I changed the settings to let me know before any updates are installed and will go through the hassle of approving what goes on from here on out.

I had trouble using the regular install. So instead I used this:

Windows 10

You need a 4GB USB drive. Once it is finished creating the install on the USB drive, go to the drive and run setup.exe and it will install Windows 10.

There is a work around for this bug if you encounter it.

I've finally semi-figured out Win8. ........enough to know I don"t like the POS. I'll hold off on my "free" download of 10. I don't like much that I'm reading about it....particularly the Big Brother aspect
