If current webcam technology was available when my kids were young, I'd have put a camera in the kitchen pointed towards the fridge, with email notifications. Then I'd know that the kids got home safe........

Last Friday, my old kitchen fridge gave up the ghost finally....it was a Fridgidare built in 1989 that we bought used 10 years ago for $100.

We bought a new Fridgidare for $800 with side by side doors, and ice/water in the door (not digital). There were many other units there for as musch as $6000 that had interactive TVs/cameras/computer screens in the door. My thought is that anything built these days would not outlast the fridge we just got, so we might as well get a basic model, and always be able to upgrade in a few years.

We also made sure that we bought a BLACK unit, not some fancy stainless steel (anti-smudging) surface that just about doubled the price.

Who offers the reliability option? My $2k-ish side by side is rusting out below the water/ice door, very slowly makes ice, and I've already replaced the ice maker once, we've maybe had it for four years.

Our fridge is 18 years old and still works fine. The ice maker still makes ice. There is no water filter to have to replace every few months. It keeps things cold and we will not replace it until it dies.

We had to replace the dishwasher. We ended up with a Bosch. It is a nice dishwasher with some nice racks for the dishes. It is super quiet but SLOW as can be. It takes three hours or more to do the dishes.

From what I hear any new washing machine is front load. Super efficient on water usage and super duper slow compared to the old top load units. Doing laundry will have to be a continuous thing instead of getting it all done in a few hours in one evening.

Ain't modern technology great! Appliances that cost crazy amounts MORE and takes two or three times as long to do the job that the old appliances, and the appliance lasts just a couple of years. Throw it away and buy an new unit. Yep, that will save the planet!

I am cranky about new kitchen major appliances. They have too many electronics, are unreliable, models are discontinued often, parts become hard to find, they are expensive to repair, and they don't last more than a decade. If I spend $1000+ for something, I want it to last for 20+ years.

My solution so far has been to buy commercial, or semi-commercial, appliances.

My refrigerator died, I bought a commercial unit (True T23). It is noisy, inefficient, zero conveniences. But is huge inside, should last for a very long time, and when it needs service, the whole compressor unit simply slides out from the bottom panel.

My range died. I bought a semi-commercial unit (American Range open burner gas range). It has no electronics and thus no program, timers, self clean, or other smarts. But it has big heat, big burners, a big oven, all burner adjustments it has needed have required only a screwdriver, and it should last for the rest of my life. I wanted to get a genuine commercial range (Garland, etc) but couldn't get one fast enough (old range died a week before Thanksgiving).

My dishwasher is getting old and falling apart. I'm not sure what to do. Commercial dishwashers really aren't "dishwashers" as we know them in the home context, they are meant to quickly (<3 minute cycle) clean and sanitize dishes that have already been scrubbed down in a sink of soapy water. Plus most of them want to be fed 240V, to drink detergent from a 5 gal bucket, and to dump wastewater into a floor drain. The fancy Bosch home dishwashers take forever to do a load, and are stuffed full of electronics.

The main disadvantage of my method is that the commercial and semi-commercial stuff is quite expensive. Oh, and the wife would really prefer the fancy gizmo stuff.

On the Commercial stuff... I own 6 commercial grade(business not home.) Those are not that much better. The biggest plus is the NSF standard, which means, mostly, that they are designed to keep a certain temp, even with a door left cracked open. --That is, they have a fan for the evaporator (cold side).

ebay is a reasonably good place to shop for those. Some brands are more quiet than others. Glass doors are also available on some. Those often have heating elements in the glass, to keep condensation from fogging the inside of the door on open. --How's that for thermal inefficiency?

funny this came up, I saw the same model yesterday at home Depot. I loudly and obnoxiously told my wife that It is guaranteed to break with in 2 years.

it was very busy crowded and the salesperson gave me a look of extreme displeasure.


My parents also have one of those high quality industrial refrigerators. I think you can relocate the compressor if you want, but it is super freaking loud as is.

I need to leave quickly in the Prius.
Seat belt is clicked, but I have to put something heavy on the passenger seat.
Side and back windows are still fogged up.
Reverse camera is whited out from contrast and the screen was designed shiny and not covered from sun by jerk engineers.
I need to crack the door to see what's behind the car.

Reverse alarm! Seat belt alarm! Door alarm! Don't! No! BE CAREFUL! I SAID BE CAREFUL!!!

Too many distractions. I'm not sure of my corners anymore.
Sensory overload.
All that extra crap does the exact opposite.
