I have spent good deal of time in my bud's 2007 Carrera S Cab.

The top is terrific...quiet, refined and solid. For SoCal I can't imagine not having a Targa or Cab.

Enjoy!

Yup, basically no compromises in a modern cab.

A co-worker asked me to drive his E63 a few years back. Easily one of the most boring cars I've ever driven. Perhaps when I'm older, I'll appreciate Mercedes more...

Pull the trigger on the 911 if a better deal doesn't come up soon, as in the next few days.

Then the investor in you will go on the hunt, and have time to find one for a steal from an auction guy or estate sale guy. You'll find one that you can't affort not to buy, but need time to hunt for it. Meanwhile, wife is happy.

Things have escalated to a 991, but they are slim pickings. Not many out there.

A striking difference between the two cars. Forget the Mercedes. I would lean and stretch toward a 991 over a 997 for her, it's a better match.

Easy!

If the Merc depreciates by 50% over 5 years, let's say-

And the 997 Depreciates by 40% over 5 years,

You're even! (plus or minus a few K)

If you have the extra nut to put into it, you will probably end up even, so buy the one that's fun.

The sage old advice was always to buy the newest 911 you could afford (back in the good old days when a Porsche was an air-cooled 911 and only a 911).

Not many 991s? Really?

I'm surprised, I would have thought there were plenty and of course you only need one. That's the car that is a smart buy, early 991s have deprecated down to where they are either going to plateau or sink very slowly. Also, most all are PDKs which she probably prefers.

Correct, it's not exactly an 2.7 Carrera RS. They should be dime-a-dozen, especially in SoCal.

OTOH, while they've sold fairly well, they may be in big demand used because of favorable pricing and the biggest draw of late model used cars, they look the same as a brand new one. Unless you really know your Porsches, (I always notice the new 991.2 cars around me), a 2012 looks the same as a 2017.

A vehicle does not have to be rare to be in short supply, there only has to be more people looking for them than there are coming online used.

I should have qualified... there are plenty around with asks in the 70-80 range, but I'm not going to pay that much. We're in no hurry.

I didn't even know there was a 991.2! Wasn't the first year 2013?

If you can afford one why can't she have what she wants?

2017 911s are all turbocharged and smaller displacement. They have several changed exterior styling cues, much more than the difference between 997.1 and 997.2.

When I browse Craigslist with generic search terms like Porsche or 911 I am surprised how many 991s I see for sale, and how reasonable they are. At least around here it's not very hard to find a PDK 991. If he was shopping for a stick, now THAT would be a challenge.
