Hello all,
New to the forum here, and I'm seeking some help. I'm interested in installing M&K 2 in 2 out Street Exhaust (MKM29ST) on my 87 3.2. So far, I've only found one YouTube video, but it's primarily focused on idling. I'd like to hear more. If any of you have this setup and have a video showcasing its sound, please share the link. Your insights will be a big help in my decision-making. Last edited by tun; 09-07-2023 at 06:25 AM.. |

dual outlet exhausts generally drone a LOT at cruising speed, and M&K are no exception to this rule. Folks do a lot of things to try to mitigate the drone (capping one of the outlets, etc.), but there's a reason so many used dual outlet exhausts end up for sale in the classified section.

It's unfortunate that I don't have a similar setup around me. I guess I'll need to take the leap |

every car is unique. drone can really be an issue with a 2 in 2 out exhaust setup. my car has a 3.2 with SSI's and 2 out M&K and i don't have drone issues. i can also cap one side if i want it a bit quieter, and that will also eliminate most drone issues. ymmv...

I bought a used M&K 2x2 street muffler without the removable tail pipe. I expected it to drone as almost all other 2x2 ones do and it did right between 2700 and 3200 RPM on my 3.0 83 ROW engine. Because the tail pipe is fixed, I couldnt limit the drone by lengthening the tail pipe. I was able to eliminate it by inserting a tail pipe baffle for a motorcycle. Car Chemistry Exhaust Inserts 3DI25R fit the tail pipe perfectly. One in each tail pipe with one section wrapped in their sound deadening steel wool was the perfect solution. The car still has a growl but very liveable in that rpm range.

I have an SC with SSI's and M&K GT3 (2 in, 2 out) exhaust. There is some slight drone from around 2,400 to 2,700 rpm but it is not horrible IMHO, but once the engine is above that it sound glorious, again IMHO. I don't have any audio/video of my setup with a mic setup at the rear of the car, but I do have in car GoPro video (not currently published). So if this is what you're interested in, let me know and I can post a short video.

I bought the M&K Active Exhaust vs 2 out exhaust for my ‘86 3.2. It swaps out the Cat and provides a Sport Exhaust like option that is activated via vacuum under engine load. Under normal driving it’s like the OEM exhaust sound, when you accelerate quickly it opens the baffle and the sound is glorious.
You can hear it here. https://youtu.be/K2-dUo57zU4?feature=shared Part no. https://mkexhaust.com/active-exhaust-with-48-state-catalytic-converter/ |

There are 2 versions of our dual inlet S and GT3 mufflers, Sport and Street, which may be getting confused.
Our Sport mufflers can be identified by a 26" wide case with unbaffled tailpipes. They are very aggressive which increases the opportunity for drone at specific RPMs depending on several factors. Our Street mufflers can be identified by a 33" wide case and baffled tailpipes. They were designed for locations with sound level restrictions and for those who are looking to mitigate drone. All street mufflers come with baffled tailpipes. The tailpipes for both Street and Sport are removable which allows the Sport mufflers to use the baffled tailpipes of the Street version or hidden caps, creating a hybrid of sorts. This is all done to give options as everyone has their own perception of sound volume and quality.

I have a 2x2 dansk GT3 muffler, which is very similar to the M&K. I have a bunch of videos of it in action but not sure if it would be relevant to the street muffler.
I was actually considering changing to the street one, but need to straighten out my header flanges first.

tun, what are you using for headers? Reason I ask is your '87 came stock with headers that brought all exhaust gasses to a single outlet feeding into a catalytic converter (a "1 out header") which would mate with a muffler that has a single inlet (a "1 in muffler"), yet you're looking to buy a muffler designed to attach with the header type porsche used on 911s prior to adding catalytic converters -- a header setup that separately moved the exhaust gasses from the left and right cylinder banks to their own individual outlets (a "2 out header"). Since you also inquired about the M&K premuffler, which is only compatible with a 1 out header, want to make sure you're looking for the proper muffler for your car.
Assuming your '87 still has its stock headers, you'd need to get a 1 in muffler, which M&K, etc. also make with a 2 out tailpipe configuration. Also, keep in mind that since the trim piece under your bumper only has a cutout for a single muffler outlet, you'd also need to change/modify the trim to accommodate the dual outlet muffler configuration you ultimately select. Finally, it's my understanding that, due to the more balanced nature of its design, a muffler attached to a 2 out header is going to sound different than that attached to a 1 out header -- i.e. the sound clips others have provided of their 2 in, 2 out mufflers may well be significantly different than their 1 in, 2 out variants. I have an '84 Carrera and installed a Racing Dynamics Cat bypass pipe with a M&K 1 in / 1 out muffler. Very pleased with the sound.
On my '83 SC, I had B&B tri-flow headers and 2 & 2 exhaust. It sounded amazing above 3000 RPM but, below, the drone was brutal...
