Hi folks--

Looks like I missed this thread the first time around. I've attached several detail shots of one of the original 20 in pretty much "as delivered" condition.
This car was displayed at the Gmund West event last summer here in Denver. Some of the pictures were taken by me, and some by Grady Clay.

It's interesting that the motor isn't twin plugged.

Other than this post I had only seen specs in the 911 perf handbook which clued me in to thier existance. Sure would be cool to see one in the flesh

There is an article in Excellence, April 1993, p. 88 on an SC-RS that found a nice home in Bahrain, then CT -- car #19 of 20.

It notes that the cars were made to provide a cheapo racer for Rothman's, and that the engineers did three things to stiffen them:
1. double the number of spot welds on the chassis.
2. Welding in rear shock member braces from the Carrera RSR.
3. Welding in strengthing pieces around the rear torsion bar tubes.

Whoa.....That is what I'm talking about!!!

I rode in an SC-RS at a driver's school at Sebring (the old Skippy short course) 20 years ago. A guy by the name of Gerald Blum was my instructor and he had one. I thought I was ridding shot gun in a GTU race. Don't know what ever happened to Gerald or the car but it sure left an impression on me.

HistoCars were at the Techno Classica in Essen with their superb S1 Quattro.

They told me Röhrl is driving the ex-Jacky Ickx/Claude Brasseur 953 in the Ostalb Rally on 14 April. This is the same car Jim posted pics of earlier in the thread, subsequently 'restored' by them. OK, the 953 is no SC RS, but it's still a fascinating 911 and I am seriously tempted to go out and see it being driven by the master. If my C3 was road legal in the UK I would whizz out there for sure, but if I don't make it will post pics when they become available. This is the car on last year's Langenburg Historic:

I saw this SCRS at Automobile Associates in CT at the last PCA meeting a few weeks ago. I thought they said it was a 1980, but I could be wrong. They said at the meeting that it was originally raced by Rothmans. They have been working on this car for about one year, and they expect to have it ready for the next Rennsport reunion in FL.
Other than the quality of the restoration they do at Automobile Associates (unbelieveable!) the most impressive thing was how the factory put extra metal in all stress points, including the floor. You can see in the photo where the floor is beefed up.

"what are we looking for in the pic re the floor?"

Look closely in the front wheel opening. There is a seam that shows the reinfocements welded in the floor pan that runs along the base where the floor pan attaches to the inside of the wheel well. At the meeting we were told that the floors were reinforced like this because the car's floor would frequently bottom out (!) hitting the ground during off road races.
All stress points throughout the car and its suspension, such as the mounting areas for the trailing arms, had similar reinfocements welded in by the factory. We were told the Rothman cars were never a big success during rallys because even with significantly reinfoced trailing arms, they would still break and the cars would often not finish.
A very impressive machine, that in this example, was seeing lots of restoration $$$.

Not strictly true (though the later coilovers were a better job for rallying than torsion bars).

The car placed second in the European Championship in '84 and won the hugely competitive Irish Championship in '85, it also won the Middle East championship three years on the trot ('84-'86) and you can imagine what the terrain was/is like out there. Remember this was the era of Group B, and 300bhp 4wd Quattros and 205 T16s were the order of the day. They were full-on works efforts costing hundreds of thousands, whereas a roadgoing SC RS was around sixty grand from the factory.

In 1984, when Prodrive hired Henri to run lead in the team for the ERC, he won 5 events in a row in the SC RS. Only problem was Henri was also campaigning some WRC events in the Lancia 037, and a back injury picked up in that car ruled him out of some ERC events, so the championship eventually went to the Jolly Club (another 037), it was a close thing though.

The 911 is a very capable rally machine in the hands of the right guy, look at the leader boards in most historic events now and there's a 911 up top. Built properly and driven with a bit of respect they will survive plenty - no rads to worry about for a start

SC RS Video

Have dug up some more video for SC RS lovers. Some are just short snippets but worth making a note of them in this thread I think.

This is a really great 9 minutes featuring the 1984 Circuit of Ireland. Henri is driving the 911, falls 6 minutes down thanks to a pair of punctures but regains the lead...really excellent footage here showing the out-and-out spirit of the guy.

This is the classic montage showing footage from the 1984 European Championship with HT at the wheel.

This is in car from three vehicles, sit or flick through the first two (Solberg and Gronholm) and then you have two and a half minutes of in-car with the late Roger Clark in the UK RAC Rally. Roger is being co-driven by Ian Grindrod and they are down the order, so the car is in thick mud churned up by those in front much of the time. Great bit of footage.

Short clip in this bit of reportage from the '84 Costa Brava shows Henri spinning the 911, maybe a small something to do with the number of spectators blocking the road ahead. The voiceover gives Capone in the 037 as the favourite, but the main man in the 911 went on to win.

Last but not least for now: This is Stephen Davies in his SC RS at a Group B demo run on the Oulton Park rally arena. The track surface is polished tarmac and is akin to sheet ice according to the man himself. He is running safari gears so third is a long way away, nice short clip nonetheless. This is the car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed:

Does anyone have better pictures of the dual brake cylinders? It's hard to tell, but maybe these are just the reservoirs and the MCs are floor mounted a la RSR?

Bit more video found, these clips are gold. 'Tribute to Toivonen' Parts 1 and 2, and the footage of the car in motion is excellent.

Henri's braking on and off-tarmac, and control in mid to high speed turns is incredible, the car is balanced beautifully. The extreme punishment dished out on some events is quite apparent in Part 2, and you can see why the factory homologated coilovers for the car as soon as they could.

Road car trunk arrangement is obviously different to racers. AFAIK the rally setup is masters off the back of the pedalbox like this:

And the reservoirs mounted like this:

I have some better pedalbox pics somewhere, will have a look for them.

The two master cylinders were mounted side-byside in front of the brake pedal. There is a good picture of the assembly shown out of the car, in Bruce Anderson's book.

What you see are just the reservoirs, the m/c are down at the pedal/balance bar
