I realize he's right here, encouraging you to do it. If, however, you don't want to, drive straight across that lake and let John Walker do it.

I know the guy you are talking about. He's very much like the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld. I've bought parts from him over the years over the phone and I've never caught him in a "good mood." I have heard that when you talk to him in person he is totally different - chatty to the point of not letting you get away. I chose to think that he is just a very busy guy and I cut him some slack on the attitude. -Chris

What a totally bogus half-ass, innuendo, chicken**** thread. If you have a bad experience with a vendor tell us who it is. P.S. Nice car Mark -- only redeemeing content

If I had JW in my backyard...he'd be my first option. Why do it yourself when a pro can do it better and in less time?

I agree that this thread is less that appropriate. If the rude guy isn't from the vendor(s) that was(were) "guessed" then it's no fair to them. FWIW, I always had a good experience with Vertex....for many years.

During the last 10 years, I have taken my Porsche to a mechanic once, and only for the 915 box to be rebuilt. They had to redo it 3 times, once every 6 months. Eventhough they stood behind their work and fixed it every time I brought it back, I got tired of brining it back every six months. Ever since then, I have promised myself to never ever let another person touch any of my cars and have stayed true to that promise since. If I were to live in Kirkland, WA, a stone throw from John Walker's shop in Greenlake Seattle (I used to live in that neck of the woods for 10 years, a Husky to boot), I would very seriously consider JW for the tranny rebuild. With his knowledge and his help to the rest of the folks on this board, he has earned the status Porsche 911 Demi-God. The only reason I would consider doing it myself is because it would give me enjoyment as well as an education during the process.

John Walker rebuilt my trans for the PO, but I have taken full advantage after purchasing with less than 1,000 miles on the rebuild. It was still stiff when I purchased the car, but it warmed up quickly. Just yet another extremely satisfied customer. With such a great resource so close, why go anywhere else?

Thanks to all for the good words about & where to go for a rebuild, and what to look for (and what not to do) when rebuilding one of these apparently not-so-mysterious boxes. I'll drop a post when the time comes. Bottom line.......if one can 'go local'.......do so. More than likely I'll have it done in my own backyard, so to speak. Bellevue, at Chris' German! Thanks all Craig
