3.6 project is almost done!
I took the car out for a drive yesterday even though the rear window hasn't been put in yet - I could'nt wait to drive it. I drove about half a mile and heard the sound of something fall off the car - looked in the rearview (side mirrors aren't hooked up yet either) and caught the sound of something shiny in the roadway - I pulled over, ran back, and found one of the exhaust tips wasn't tight enough and had come loose. So there I am in the middle of the street trying to pick up this very hot pipe. Finally got it, jumped back in, and drove to the gas station to fill it up. My initial driving impression was that the car runs beautifully - it really gets up and goes! I will have the mirrors and rear window done this week so I can drive it and then I can start on the interior. I also noticed that the back end of the car sits almost 1" higher than it did before - is the 993 motor alot lighter than the SC motor? I have attached a couple of pics - the pic of the exhaust shows one exhaust outlet - the other is still on my garage floor!

The weight of the M64/05 as installed in your car is almost exactly the same as the old 3 liter w/ ac. If the car is sitting higher it's something else. They do have to be driven for a w bit to settle the suspension after being on a lift.
Looks great!, Is that Timmin's new header setup?

Yep - it's the Timmins exhaust set up - I was really impressed with the quality of workmanship and it sounds pretty good - not too quiet and not too loud.

The car actually did quite well, essentially what I expected. There were several stock cars (2 993s) to compare against, also. We video'd every run and I have the printouts of everyone's car. I'll post sometime tonight with links to the video and scans of the power curves. The bottom line is 253rwhp for my car.

Manjit,
When can you drive it by? I need a closer look! PS, My cars butt rode a little high for a day or two. It's temporary.

I wonder if the combination of a lighter-than-stock exhaust, missing rear windshield (35-40 lbs) and possibly lighter rear engine (if taking the power steering pump, heater blower and air box lowers what's considered the engine weight at all) could mean a slightly lighter rear end at the end of your swap?
Of course, the rear suspension settling back in will probably account for most of the change. How long had it been since those torsion bars were last fully unsprung?

Very nice. I really like the exhaust. Any specs on that. I noitce a f/g rear. This could have added to the lightness raising the car if it was done at the same time as the motor.

Congrats on your conversion! I love the black fan and shroud; I’ve never seen anyone do that, very cool look.
I lost 100 lbs from my conversion, and that includes the oil cooling upgrades. I think the exhaust, heater blower, p/s pump, and replacing the huge old compressor w/ a newer one, or just getting rid it, really add up to a lot of weight savings. The only other small contributing factor was the sound proofing under the carpet, but that wasn’t even close to 100 lbs worth and I did put in all new German wool.

A 993RS w/o ac, w/o heater motor, w/ a light flywheel w/ stock exhaust is 487#
A stock SC as installed w/ exhaust, steel flywheel, heater motor and ac is 485# The difference in exhaust is only a few #s, the difference between a f/g and stock rear valance is ~19#

It looks like the front end has settled in and I would imagine the rear will also. I hope to have the windows in by the weekend and then I can drive it! The exhaust, for those interested, is from Timmin's - you can see it at www.instant-g.com under the Mcneil muffler set up. I wanted to thank everyone on the board for the help and advice - without this board I never would have attempted the swap. I also wanted to thank Mark (Moses) for letting me see your ride to compare what I was doing with the final result. Mark, I should have the windows in by the weekend so I can bring it by this weekend - let e know. Did you get the cats welded on?
