I did not see anyone here with a G50 tranny carrera (except for the patient). I think Zoanas better make a post asking for that one trick it takes to separate the G50 from the 3.2L engine. It is not the same as the 915 tranny.

And if you wanna take out the axles, better have a big a$$ socket (what size?) 3/4 inch breaker bar (I got one), and an 8ft pipe (Vash must have one).

I'm thinking of dropping the tranny with the motor - bad idea?

I have the socket for the axles, and I think a breaker bar somewhere. I've removed them before.

I am thinking of dropping the tranny too, but you still need to know how to separate the two. There is a trick with the 915, I don't know about the G50.

Ya have to pull out the shaft that holds the t/o bearing to seperate the two. Any problems just ask some one here.

Thanks, buttjoint

Dan, my pool is a "no speedo zone". That means the speedo limit is 0.

Not a bad idea, in fact you have no other choice! The Bentley manual is very good for the G50 cars and I would recommend having it there. Think of the engine and transmission as one unit suspended by 2 bolts on opposite ends.

Why do you want to mess with the Axle stubs? Installing new CV's? If not, just remove the 6 bolts from the transmission flange carefully and pull them out of the way. Me and my brother reinstalled my engine in my 89 coupe Tuesday night. Any questions about the G50 removal/installation, I would be glad to help.

3 guys better than 2

young, strong, flexible guys better than old, stiff, cranky, weak guys

You need:

1 or 2 jacks

some rubber pads/lots of cloths

a plate to hold the engine on the jack

3 jack stands

2 concrete blocks

beer + pizza but not before

If you do the beer first, you won't need the rest of that stuff like tools, etc.

Wish I could join in and get some hands on experience, but alas, I'm out of the area.

A lift can help -- this also shows a way to support the engine balanced on a jack with jack stands for support. The concrete blocks are below just out of the foreground.

I pulled my engine by myself. Put it back with 3 guys total. It can be done all by yourself. Don't forget though, putting it back = gravity not on your side.

I'd like to drop by, but if it's overcrowded already then maybe I can get in on the re-install.

Either way, you're welcome to use any tools I have. I have an ATV jack and miscellaneous other tools. You can hold on to the jack for the reinstall too.

The ATV jack is very useful. I dropped and re-installed the motor/tranny from my '89 G50 last year, all by my lonesome. My garage is too small for even two people - see pic. The ATV jack really helped.

Quick update - June 26-27 is a go. I've PM'd 11 of you guys that have offered to come by, and JYL, I just saw your last post. The ATV jack sounds like it would really help. I have a couple of small floor jacks and one large one, but no more than that. What are some of the methods and configurations for the jack/pallate/engine cart, etc.?

Also, I'd like to hear some suggestions for the "while it's out" list. Just the budget friendly stuff. I plan to replace the sound pad, and do a thorough cleaning of the bay, but there are probably lots of little things that would be nice to do with the motor out.

dropping the tranny with the motor = easiest way, IMHO

search on while & out & engine -- you'll find a lot of stuff. A repaint of engine comp. might be a good thing. At least detail it. Wax will help you keep it clean (until the wax is all gone in a year or two).

Talking ATV jack

Just bought an ATV jack at Kragen on sale for $59.95. My guess is that you could borrow one.

Might also thing about borrowing an engine stand to help with cleaning.

I would enjoy seeing one pulled but sound real crowded.

Good luck..... Think about R&R of engine mounted thermostat.

Zoanas, sent you a PM.

It's pretty trivial with the ATV jack, no fancy balancing.
- Cut a piece of plywood to sit on the jack,
- jack up the car,
- loosen (just a little) the two bolts that mount the engine and the two that mount the tranny,
- slide the ATV jack under the engine (the balance mount is right at the join between the engine and tranny), because of the ATV jack's geometry you don't want the engine all the way "back" on the jack or the muffler will interfere with the ATV jack, by the way the engine can sit on the heat exchangers without damaging them,
- lower the car as much as you can and still reach the mounting bolts,
- raise the ATV jack to meet the engine, remove the bolts,
- then raise the car and lower the engine, checking every inch or so that you're not fouling or damaging any lines,
- eventually, when the rear of the car is jacked up really high (I forget the exact measurement but the rear bumper was about the height of my solar plexus), you'll be able to roll the ATV jack out with the engine on it,
- some people remove the rear bumper/valance, I'd rather just jack the car a bit higher
- one way you can jack the car is with a floor jack under the rear edge of the floorpan (use a length of 2x4 to spread the load) and jackstands under the jacking points by the rear t-bars, by alternating jacking and repositioning the jackstands you can get the car very high, if your jack doesn't lift high enough some sturdy wood blocks help, the floor jack handle has to come in from the side (since the ATV jack blocks the rear) which makes the car move sideways as it is lifted, this is only slightly irritating

Hope this makes sense. Sent you a PM on the ATV jack (did I already post that? getting senior.)

$59.95 at Kragen sounds painless. Might be a "must own" item.

This is like morphine for the pain. I love it. My friends do too since none are mechanically inclined. Wish I had had it when I dropped the engine. I put it back in in 45 minutes.

Got it from the host.
