The electric spoiler is OK - a friend bought an '87 and his wife didn't like the tail, so - one of those things! - I said I'd like to put it on mine...

that's my story and i'm sticking to it!!

Man!! this thread has been going on forever. I am pretty sure when I last posted a pic of my car, I had not changed out the original "sugar scoop" light buckets or painted the wheels.
So here is the latest pic of my car. I had her out yesterday for a spin, but today it's snowing AGAIN!!

Thank you. Ahhhhh, what color is it? I don't know. On the metal tag in the trunk the number 817-9-2 is stamped. This tag says Made in West Germany on top, then below that, is the word Kunstharzlack, then that 5 digit number. I went to the local dealer and they could not find this code. Also, when looking at the old color charts from 1983, they could not find this particular color. The closest they could fine was a "Kiln Red Metallic", but it didn't match exactly. So I can only assume it was a "Paint to Sample" color. The paint is original, car has never been in an accident. At times it looks like a brick or burgandy color. However when the sun hits it, if you look close enough, you can almost see a very, very fine metallic. I have had quite a few people tell me that they have never seen this color before. They also don't believe that it's original, until I show them under the hood and under the carpets.

If anyone has access to a data base of color codes and can look that number up, that would be great.

I have given thought to getting a Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche to get more facts on the car, but $100 to find out what color it is? .......

All the glass is original, the exahust is original, stamp Jan 82 (car was built in Oct. '82), it has a full leather interior.

The gloss is from me waxing it 1 time short of a million times.

S2GART, you need to go inside the trunk and remove the carpet and check where the strut mounts on the driver side I believe. Somewhere on the side should be a small plate or sticker that has the color code. If you do a search on this forum for color codes, I think you will get even a pic of what you should be looking for.

I just went into the garage and took these pics. I looked at the strut towers on both sides and did not find a tag. As you can see in these pics, the metal tag I was mentioning is on the passenger side, near the headlight. Also I took another pic of the car, using a flash and you see how it becomes more vibrant red.

Last pic, you can see the code. I translated it using Bablefish and the word directly above this code says Synthetic varnish. That's why I be;ieve this to be the paint code.

That is it S2GART! Now, I can't remember correctly but if you do a search on color codes, there was a thread that directed you to a page which provided the color of the code in that plate. Sorry I can't be more specific, since it is been a while.

I'll search this board. I haveused google and searched the various websites, to include Glasirut's and there is no 817 I found 811 which is the forementioned Kiln Red Metallic which apparently was only used in 1983. Eitherway, I coudn't find any paint codes that were structured with 2 dashes in it.

There were some colors with that type of numbering but they are from the mid 70's. Try and see if there is another sticker or something around inside the driver door sill area. I found this link so you can input the color code:

http://www.paintscratch.com/col.htm

Hope it can help a little in some way.

The only sticker on the car aside from the engine compartment, is the one on the driver's door jam. It's the long black and white one with the VIN number, date of build, "meets federal safety and bumper standards....." When I went to local dealer, he looked under the trunk lid and saw that there wasn't a sticker there, as he was expecting. He mentioned that the hood may have been replaced. Though even in his owns words after looking under the trunk carpeting, it didn't appear that the car had ever been repaired. Unless the hood just itself was replaced/re-sprayed. If so, they did a beautiful job, no orange peel, etc. That would be my only explaination as to why there is no sticker under the trunk lid.

Well, if that is the case then I guess there is nothing you can do about that. Normally it is in the trunk by the same are you found that one little plate. You don't have any other documentation for the car? I assume that you are the 3 owner or so, right? Anyway, good luck and I hope you find something out. Take it easy!

How did you know I was the 3rd owner?

I thought about contacting, via the Porsche website, the classic car/restoration dept. and asking them. I mean, I am not losing sleep over it, it just would be nice to answer people's questions about what the color is.

I do appreciate your help/suggestions.

I just guessed, since most well maintained Porsche's usually seem to only be about a 2 to 3 owners. I maybe incorrect, but at least that seems to be the case. I'm the third owner of my Targa. Anyway, I understand what you mean! It is always good to at least know some history about your car, unless you are getting a show piece. Which is not our case here. Well, I wish you luck and hopefully you'll get some answers, sorry I could not be more of help. However, there are some very knowledgeable individuals here in the forum, that may be able to point you in the right direction. Hey, no problem we are all here to try help one another!
