I think short hoods in general need them. From a side view, the bumpers come so close to the ground that when you delete the rocker covers, the body work starts low, comes up a couple inches and then drops back down at the other bumper. The rockers just make the car look more complete, to me at least.

Here is mine again! I posted some pics at the begining of this thread so here is now with a new chin spoiler, sport muffler, and a few other upgrades. I also repainted the Targa bar and front valance and bumper.

New roof liner, I'm thinking quilted black leather (thin foam) with red stitching to match the seats

Refurb front Fuchs and red brake callipers to (rears already done)

I've had it about a month now after buying it from another Pelican member in Colorado. She's completely original and such a fun car to drive.
I still feel like a kid at Xmas.

I did have to get a couple things sorted out (smog and fixing the A/C), and now after a full day detailing yesterday she's good to go..

This is a wonderful thread, but it's a little light on longhoods. Here's mine, after a long, arduous restoration. Been back on the road about a year and a half now.
