79SC with 140K miles. Engine pulled for some R&R. When I talked to an experienced porsche mechanic he responded to my question about where to send the distributor with a "don't bother, nothing in it anyway."
Is this true? If not, who overhauls the things and what would I expect to pay and what will I gain? ![]()

I believe the host has a rebuild program. The springs wear and can alter the timing curve, the bushings can wear also causing funny timing issues. I am sure there is more that can go bad, try a search on dizzy + rebuild

I agree with the two responses above. My '81 with 133,000 miles had a distributor that was full of gunk, weights weren't sliding freely. Read the thread listed by Don, then decide if you want to tackle it yourself or send it to someone.
It's not too bad to do by yourself, just be careful because some of the parts are hard to find if you break one.

That experienced porsche mechanic' must have been trained after 1983, and, HENCE, hasn't got a clue what is inside a 2.0, 2.2, 2.4, 2.7, 3.0, or 3.3 distributor!!!
If he was ever exposed to the proper info ... it has been forgotten, or lost amongst the DME and water-cooled junk in his brain! Experience comes in various flavors ... watch out that his flavor doesn't cost you BIG-TIME! 'Experienced' can mean nothing, or that the person has lots of experience changing out lots of modules based on charts, and no knowledge whatsoever of the function or characteristics of those modules in the SYSTEM!!!

Interesting comment, but, my question remains unanswered.
"Is this true? If not, who overhauls the things and what would I expect to pay and what will I gain?"

Pelican parts will rebuild it, 283.50 is base price. You will gain more accurate timing.

Better still, why not buy a timing light, check your advance to see that it works and save a ton of moooolah.
Why fix it if it ain't broke? -Joe |
