DOH! Got it to work. You really do have to 10% smarter than the equipment!

this is great. My wife has been asking how an engine works for months. Without a good illustration I couldn't show her. We'll use this one, it's perfect.

thanks!

Too cool. Is it a trick of my PC or is the pully on the fan turning the wrong way?

The crank and the fan are both clearly going cw but fan pulley looks like it is ccw. I think it is synchronous so the next image looks like the one before the present image.

I love it, just keep on wishing for more....how about a flash of white/orange in the cylinder when the spark plug fires, with dull red exhaust exiting the cylinder...

Oh and I'd love colour in the engine...nice aluminium shades to separate actual engine from space and oh....

I suppose there is no end to things that could be added.....it is on my desktop now and I think it is great as it is.................

Darryl,

If you want any technical advice on MFI, cam timing or anything feel free to e-mail me. There are some MFI diagrams I can scan for you. I have some other cool ideas for you.

Best,
Grady

To set the gif as you background, but keep it animated instead of selecting "set as background" when you right click choose "set as desktop item".

A desktop item is using active desktop instead of setting it as desktop wallpaper. You should probably first right click and "save as" to your computer somewhere. Then click programs, control panel, display. Once the display box comes up click "desktop" then "customize desktop" then when the next box comes up click "web". Once in Web click "Add" then browse to the image on your computer and select it.

Once the image is on your desktop you can move it around by dragging the top thicker border (border appears when you put the mouse over the image). You can also click the first box from the left in the top border to maximize the image on your desktop. It is also possible to resize the image by dragging the sides or corners of the image.

This method also works well for adding regular jpg images to your desktop because it uses less memory than the usual "set as background"

Also, I used to use an animate gif as my desktop, but I noticed that it was bumping my cpu utilization up by 10-15%, so I stopped. The impact you feel will be determined by the image and your PC, so it may not be an issue for you.

Ever notice how the wheels on Semi-trucks on the freeway sometimes look like they are spinning backwards? Has to do with the frequency of the spinning and the locations of the holes and how our eyes see or something like that, I think.

If I could get my hands on a later EFI engine factory manual, an animation of that could be possible too. I just need a nice detailed cut-away drawing as a starting point.
Something like this?

How about a 4-cam carrera, or a 917 (912) engine?

Or maybe you could show the path of an errant washer that gets sucked into the engine!

What are you using it to animate it? I have similar images of VW engines.

I just made yet another addition to the model, the connecting rods are now complete, there's a nut to retain the bolt!

Grady, I'll take you up on that MFI modeling technical assistance!

Bill! Yes, that's exactly the type of drawing I seek for an EFI project!

What tools to I use to do these animations? Microsoft Windows Paint and Microsoft Picture-it 9.0 to build the "flip-book" and rotate pieces by 1º increments. Most of the work I do at the pixel level using 6x magnification of a 1000x792 sized drawing.

It's like electronic knitting... it relaxes me.

As one other lister suggested, what a wonderful way to teach the operation of a gasoline engine...

All we need is the sound effects.....you know.....Suck -Squeeze - Pop - Phooey....

Love it...
