Looking very nice Jeremy! It will be done before you know it now that the valvetrain is all buttoned up. Did you ever locate some jet nuts for the intake plenums in lieu of the barrel nuts?

Just make sure you make people put on their sunglasses when you pop the decklid, those plenums and the fan will burn their retinas otherwise.

Flame ring, eh? My guess is turbocharging is somewhere down the road?

Ralph

WOW - That looks great Jeremy. When you get a chance could you post or e-mail me your build sheet. Did you do the powder coating or was it sent out? I hope to get mine back together before the November event at Sebring! Thanks for your help - Tim

Jeremy,
Very nice job. I just got my JEs in the mail, they looked nice, but no mirror finish like yours...what did you have done to them? I think I'm looking at a few nights with the dremel and polishing rouge...and did you also polish up the valves/chambers?

thanks
john

Ok, here's the quick and dirty version.

I started with a spreadsheet - but it went quickly by the way side...

Started off with a 3.2 that was puffing smoke on downshifts (mainly at the track) Oil usage went from 1000 a qt - next oil change - 700 a qt. After recent track visit - 400 qt.

What I have done.
Bored throttlebody (thanks Carrera 3.5!)
Extrude Honed intake
Performance Valve (autocross/DE) job from EBS
6 valves replaced, all guides. Titanium springs and retainers.
Traded in my 3.2 pistons and Cylinders for 3.4 jugs (made from a 3.3 965) Heat coated and flame ringed.
9.8 to one JE Pistons and Rings with lightweight wrist pins. Measured at 9.8X (and came from EBS all shiny!)
ARP rod bolts (thanks to Carrera Cab!)
Supertech Head Studs
993 SS cams from John Dougherty Racing Cams
Replaced all Rocker Shafts
RSR Rocker Seals
930 Oil Compression fitting on cam feeds
New Carrera Tensioner lines
Teflon lined, stainless steel braid Carrera Fuel line
Powdercoated engine tin, valve covers, intake.
All new engine tin fastners
New oil sender
Steve Wong 3.4 chip
New Cylinder head temp sensor
New Speed reference Sensor
New Reference sensor
B & B exhaust 1 3/4 from a 964 (used, but new to me)
New B & B oil lines from Instant G.
All new fastening hardware. Grade 8
Surfaced flywheel
On it's way - custom dual in for B & B Headers Dual out muffler from Ben

While I was in there. New Engine Pad from Appbiz
New Rear Shocks (Bilstein HD's)
Replacing (currently) CV joint - outer boot rip... so replacing the axle
G-50 clutch fork update (weltmeister)
Spring centered 930 clutch
Various other items recommended from Wayne's Book from Pelican Parts...

Jeremy,

If you are still interested, you should be able to source them from Coast Fabrication here in SoCal. Coast supplies hardware and fasteners for just about every form of high-level motorsport in North America, and also for McLaren and other Formula 1 teams overseas (hard to believe but true). They should have them available.

Phone number is 714.842.2603. I'm friends with Jeff Heywood (co-owner) but he does the fabrication & race muffler aspect of the business so just ask for the hardware department.

Motor is looking awesome, hopefully it will run as good as it looks. I too started with the a/c in place and quickly ripped it out which makes the engine bay look that much nicer.

Ralph

Just an FYI. My motor running 993 Supercup cams (on a euro 3.2) had a problem resulting in it destroying more than half the valve stem seals. With the higher lift cams, there was not enough clearance between the guides and the caps (I think!). Anyhow, the fix is to machine 2mm off the guides. This may be peculiar to the guides my mechanic used - I don't know - but I thought it was worth mentioning. It may be something John Dougherty is aware off.

Its going to be one heck of an engine however you look at it. Probably stronger than Ralph's. I think you will love the cams - I do and I haven't even got the engine remapped yet.

Richard

Thanks Richard - I saw your post on the other thread. I emailed EBS and was assured that I would have plenty of room. I did my valve to piston checks and had miles of room with the JE cut outs (unrelated). Still a good warning for anybody going down this road...

Recommend changing the rear trailing arm bushings to monoballs while youv'e got the engine out. It is just about impossible to do so when its back in on a G50.

How come no flame red compressor? Looks nice and I applaud your work. You'll love the 3.4. I'm getting ready for Watkins Glen for 3 days this weekend so I'll be spending more time at the track. The biggest improvement I've noticed is low end torque. The engine starts pulling at 3000k and never lets go till the rev limiter hits. It's really transformed my car. All I have to do is seriously strip it to make it really fast, but with a perfectly good car, thats hard to do. Whats your target date for driving?

I second that. It is indeed not possible to do the monoballs with the trans. in place. Not enough room to get at the fastening bolts.

Think about doing the clutch slave cylinder while you're in there. Very easy to do now, not too expensive, and will probably be the last time you ever have to do it.

Looks great Jeremy. Wow.

BTW, got the wheels back today. Thanks a bunch once again!

Thanks 89911 for your suggestions - KTL - you are welcome - glad the wheels fit - and anything to help another 87' out!

D Hanson - yes, the engine will match the exterior now...

My son (5yr old) looked at me in the garage yesterday, cocked his head like the RCA dog and said " Dad - nobody is going to see the engine, why did you paint it". I said yes you are right - but we will know and when we open the trunk to see the engine, it will be fun to see the look on their face! He agreed...

Single Plug?

Jeremy:
Very impressive work. I'm taking notes as my '87 is becoming more and more of a track car and I'm just waiting for the day when my engine starts gulping oil (still only burns 0.5 a quart/1000mi @73k).

What are the compression ratio limits for a single plug? I see that your new pistons have a 9.8 cr, which I believe is similar to the European cr specs. Others like 89911 and Carrera3.5 have converted to twin plugged heads. Can the cost of twin plugging be prevented by using milder cams or adjusting the ignition through a chip?

Thanks
Pete
