Dropping a motor in 5 easy steps

With 2nd gear gone for 2-3 weeks now, and serious withdrawal symptoms setting in from having to drive the Jeep, I decided it was time to get on the ball and at least get the motor out and get the trans prepped for rebuild. We just put this combo in a few months ago so everything came away freely, cleanly, I think I only swore once when oil got everywhere coming from the hardline. Anyway, my version of dropping a motor in 5 easy steps.

Step 1: Select a car. This one looked a bit ratty being cursed and regularly hit, but so much the easier with no rear valence. Mig comes out soon to put a new lens panel in.

What we're working with: Time: 7:19 PM tonight

Step 2: Disconnect everything.

Step 3: I still love the 2 jack method, though I was without my favorite 2x2 board.

Step 4: Lower it carefully down and away. Missed one thing on the way down: trans ground strap, otherwise smooth sailing. Time: 9:19 PM

Step 5: Italian sub with cappicola, salami and ham and doused with Caesar dressing. MMMMMMM

Tune in this weekend for the trans rebuild. that will be scary!!!

God that sounds great!!!!

Sherman, if you want it, seriously, we can work out a deal. My goal for the car is to make it into a turbo-cab, no tail, when doing all the bodywork (a lot!). Was planning on this winter, but could see reprioritizing, focusing on the body, and when the time comes for a motor, I could consider a 3.6 or 3.3 turbo.

Only while working under the car during prep. When dropping the motor... no.

That looks like one rusty car.

Is that from the salt on the roads where you live - or do you live next to the sea? What gives?

I think that rust is actually glue that use to hold the engine pad in place.

David wins! this car is on a serious diet, and motor sound pad is sort an oxymoron, don't you think?

Is there more info on the "two jack" method? I will doing the engine drop soon. I understand about the jack under the block, but what happens to get the car so high? It looks like the jack is almost in the middle of the car. I assume either you chock the front wheels or use jack stands?

I guess for Shuie its the "Tujague's" method?

Here it is in reverse:

Project 73 911 R/RS -- Week 13

Front wheels are chocked.

One jack is at the very rear of the floorpan with a 2x8x24. With an appropriate jack, you can raise the car very high.

With the tires still on the rear, I jack up the floor so tires are 2 inches or so off the ground and then, in a very controlled way, grab the car and *try* to tip it over, that is, really see how well it's on the jack.

Hope this helps and good luck with your drop!

Hey Jon,
I've been putting on get togethers for a few years which I call Messin' with 911's. We get together and work on a motor, transmission or someone's car. You can watch, help, work on your own car or just drop by for lunch and abuse.

The sessions are pretty infrequent and it's usually only a couple of guys. Here's some pics from the last one:
Barry Bennet's car: Update

I'm having a transmission rebuild session next Saturday. Shaun's transmission has some demons in it that need to be exorcised.

I've been fixing my boat pretty straight out lately, especially on weekends, but I might hopefully be able to play hooky for a bit to drive on up. My 915 needs a rebuild quite badly, so some experience is a plus.

2nd gear grinds when ANY kind of speedy shift is put on, I really have to let the rpms drop in order to get it not to make noise that sends the hair on my back on edge.. More like a gas, clutch,,, one thousand one, shift..
I knew this when I bought it, but it can be shifted without it but not a lot of fun..
