Thanks CL and DRACO for bringing this thread back. You remind me that I've gotta do this work at some point. Been running without highbeams (pulled fuse) for the last two years.

Thanks to Jim and everyone one this tread for another great "fix it if you can" moment. The Lego repair worked perfectly and now low, high and flash as as good as new. I also ordered the headlight relay because I do as DRACO says, and it seems like a good idea.
A couple of thoughts on those doing this project. 1. the inset within the rubber headlight pull knob with the light graphic is fragile plastic. It can be removed successfully if you carefully pry around the sides. It can also break into 10 pieces if you aren't careful. (don't ask) 2. The pressure bar (E in the photo on the previous page) comes right out if gently pryed from the non-contact side. You need it out in order to slide it back into the slot carved into your new Lego piece. Maybe this helps. Thanks again. CL

Just did this fix. Took my car to Pepboys to remove the wheel. The rest is a piece of cake.
I used a short socket with an extention to remove the steering wheel. It gave me a better lineup than a deep socket. |

Fixed mine today. Finally. Set the laptop in the passenger seat with this thread open just for reference. Thanks Won!

Hmm, I'll have to give it a shot with the WD-40
One thing I noticed that my headlights are a bit brighter since I installed the relay kit.

Certainly, if you measured the voltage before and after you will know why

Hi: I have a 1982 ROW 930 with a low beam headlight switch problem.
I thought that I had no high beams, and now realize that I have permanent highs and no lows. That also explains why the fog lights were not working. As per the insight on this thread, I removed the switch. The high beam contact was stuck to the centre stalk, and there was some burnt crap around the silver bar at the bottom. The centre arm is sprung / bowed toward the high beam contact with quite a bias toward wanting to stay down. I cleaned the area up and employed the high tech toothpick test approach. Voila; low beams and fog lamps! Now for the dumb question. If I bend the centre stalk so it is sprung toward the low beam contact, moving the high beam lever toward the front of the car does nothing. If I pull the lever through to flash I see where the silver bar at the bottom causes all contacts to close. So, when the bar is pushed forward for high beams is there something that happens in the mechanism that causes the centre stalk to move down to contact the high beams? I am thinking my unit is beyond repair. |

DaytonaCoupe66,
I had a similar issue and first I tried to repair by bending but it was not sucessful. I ended up getting a used unit from Parts Heaven and no problems since.

HarryD; yep, ordered a replacement switch from our host (and relay kit) so hopefully won't have to revisit this problem any time soon.

Just did mine yesterday,...slight bend of the high beam contact arm (AWAY from it's intended contact point...took care of the issue. Good cleaning, and lube....she's problem free!
THANKS! Doyle

I too just implemented this fine quick fix...and without removing the wheel no less!
I had the 'sticky high beams' dilemma and this cleared it up straight away... Thanks!

Received the highbeam switch and relay kit from the host. Took more time than an average person likely would have so as to ensure that I didn't mess anything up with the headlight switch connections on the dash. The relay kit was a breeze to install and ranks high for clarity of instructions. Now everything works as it should!
I don't think I'd have tackled a wiring headcramp if the wealth of information on this forum had not been readily available, including responses to questions. Very gratifying to DIY, and a side benefit is all the other stuff that is found while '....in there'. Cleaned up some old wiring too. |
