I searched the forum and learned there was a quick fix, so I got myself a 1-1/16" (26.9mm!) deep socket for the steering wheel. 30 minutes later, the job was done. The purpose of this post is to highlight just how easy the task was.

Here it is; simply pull off the horn pad, and undo one nut and 6 screws. The center contact is almost touching the high beam contact, turning them on simultaneously.

I bent the high beam contact down a little so everything isn't touching at the same time.

Thanks a lot Won!
Just had the same thing suddenly happen to my 78SC, and it was just a 20 min. job to make it good as new. Saved me a few hours of scratching my head trying to figure out how to procede.

Sincerely
Kjell

I can't believe I had to do this to a 2 year old switch tonight, but I did....

When making turns the click of the cancelling ring would make the high beams come on, a good bump in the road as well. Those J-west relays were working just fine! both beams on at once no problem...

What sucks is this happened about a month after installing my new to me 930s wheel. If I had known this was going to happen to a relatively new switch, I was already 1/2 way there to making the fix with the wheel off.

Oh well, only took about 1/2 hour to do, and now I can see a really good gap, and the lights function correctly again.

I just did this fix last weekend as well. Easy enough as I've had the steering wheel off a few times. I still don't like removing the column plastic shells. Too worried about breaking them or the screw tabs. Those things are rediculously expensive to replace with new ones.

I suddenly got the symptom of random low/high beam switching...thought I'd remembered a thread about this...found it and did the 5 min fix w/ steering wheel in place, using the same thin slot screwdriver I used on the cover screws.

Thanks to all for a great thread!

Before you fix or replace the switch, add the headlight relay kit, JWST-911-HLPR, available from our host to your car. The problem is caused by the headlight current traveling through the switch, and heating it. With the relay added, very little current travels through the switch.

Even happens with the relay kit... I installed the relay kit with the new signal stalk 2 years ago. The metal bends some with use or the factory tolerance is too close.
Either way, a slight adjustment with a screwdriver is all it takes if caught early.

Anyone know what size screws hold the stalks to the console. Mine seem to have...disappeared...during my restoration.

Bump up and thanks to this thread! I've been going through the electrical system anticipating installing the engine. My 73.5 restoration had the symptoms of Hi/Low beam not reliably switching between the two. I removed the steering wheel, opened up the column covers and was met with a dirty, hairy mess inside the turn signal switch assembly.

Cleaning out the mess and bending the Hi contact spring down was the solution. I relubed the plastic slider (aka Lego piece) with a little lithium grease and re-assembled everything. Result- operates like a brand new switch. Not bad for a 40 year old device that hasn't worked since 1990 (the time my 911 was taken apart by previous owner). Thanks to this thread and contributors!

I've got mine apart and was able to measure. 3 mm by .5 pitch by 8 mm long.

Edit - also I referred back to this thread the other day to review what the fix was as my high beams periodically "flashed" when I would signal left or right. I didn't notice any particular issue with the contacts and "springs" as others on this thread - but I did spray the contacts and internals with cleaner and wiped down the internals as best I can. This alone resolved my issue!

Another big thanks to Won with his great pics and descriptions. My high beams were stuck on like many others and as I moved the lever back and forth to try to turn them off, smoke came up from the stalk. Being only a week away from a long drive from LA to Monterey for the car shows and historic races, I was worried I would be without lights. Thankfully, because of these great Pelican threads, I was able to remove the thick metal piece and bend it slightly back towards the front of the car which allowed the correct contacts to touch when moving the stalk. Works great now. Thanks again!

Thank you all for this thread! Just fixed my 87 Targa's bumping/turning highbeams in 5 min without removing my wheel. Bent the contact with a small flathead and marveled at my success.

What a PITA, folks in front of me must think I am bapping them with the lights on purpose.

And my switch is only 4 years old - but this will help - Thanks Won.

Great post - can I lean on the accumulated knowledge to help diagnose my issue?

I also have no low beams - UNLESS I move the turn signal either for left turn or right turn, then the lowbeams pop on, and the fog light (only left side working) turns off.

QUESTION - from that description, can you guys tell if I have a 'wires in the wrong place' issue, a faulty turn signal switch, or something else going on???

I'll try the fix noted above and report back.....but would appreciate any comments from the group!!

thx

td

Send a message via Skype™ to DRACO A5OG
You have two issues.

A faulty switch and a fault in the wiring in the head light causing a short on your fog light.

Address the switch then check the ground in the head light.

Thanks for posting these details - I suspect this is the problem I am having when only my high beams work. Maybe...

Thanks
