OK I have got the pics of the powder coated tub.

I apologize for the darkness and the use of the flash. The car was stored in a dark corner of the shop.

It will be moved in the next couple pf days to get sanded and primed.

Then painted and back to Zuffenhaus for the re-assembling...

Flavah Flave say OWWWWWWW!!!!! sick,man. Why are you cutting the torque tube as opposed to using a short bell housing G50 and kevalr clutch, etc? Will that not work with the 6 speed box?

Curious, was the powder nice enough to have coated the fenders and bumpers, etc to call the whole thing done? Can you color sand and polish powder coat?? (I know you are not a body / paint man, but someone may know the answer.)

Can't wait to see the rest of the car going together and your first impressions upon driving it.

The powder coating does look nice in person. So in theory we could have done the whole thing and be done with it...

But there are some places that need to be worked on (single wiper, rear flares, bumper fitments) and I do not think you can powder coat on bondo and fillers.... but I could be wrong...

What is that "tubing" on the front suspension, on the inside of front wing?

Powder Coating
 

Powder coating motorcycle frames has become a fairly commonplace procedure now that the UV issues have been dealt with. At one time "powder" didn't do so well in the sunlight and fading or color changing was an issue. I've used powder coating in vintage BMW motorcycle restorations with good success but there are some caveats.

The only thing that will take powder coat is JB Weld since it is a metallic based compound. I've used it on small parts that were "holed" or needed improvement due to pitting or rust.

I would never consider powder coating the exterior of a car because it will chip and you cannot touch it up very easily.

The other downside to powder coating is that it does not buff out well if you pick up a scratch here or there.

Other than that, GREAT JOB! Cannot wait to see the finished product.

It's all relative... There was a discussion 10 pages ago abt the financial aspect of it...

Put it this way... one could buy a 997 GT3 and drop $30-40k in 2 years.

I don't know if you have thought about this yet, but this thread has so much excitement behind it that you may be able to recoupe some of your expenses by having the car do a world tour and extra revinue for a ride in the "Blue bird":)

Great thread. I have been reading it for a couple of days and have come to the conclusion that you are TOTALLY insane, Matteo.......but in a good way...lol. That is going to be one scary 911. You have to keep us apprised of when that thing will be on the track. My family has a new biz in Charlotte, so I have an excuse to being the area. You should take that thing to the BMW rally at the factory in Spartanburg this fall and embarras the B-boys..lol.
I have decided to leave my car pretty much stock because my crusty German mechanic says that it is in such good shape that it looks like it has been in a time capsule for 20 years and I should leave it mostly original. My 2 brothers and i have said that we will eventually build a PCA racer. My middle brother, who is doing his Barber advanced race course at Lime Rock this wekend, suggested a 914. But after reading this, i am inclined to do something cool, like backdating/updating a mid to late 70's car or high mileage 915 equipped Carrera to '84 SCRS specs. Fast, but not as much welding and cutting as an RSR replica, I would think. Not as wild and expensive as the Matteo-mobile, but a cool way to spend too much money, I think. Thanks for the inspiration:D

Question : as far as making an '85 car into a '74 car - is the most important thing to weld in a new TUB in order to receive the new and different registration that way ? :confused: That kinda got glossed over a bit.

Timetable:
The car is in the shop being painted. Before getting painted it needs to be totally primed and all the little inperfections need to be dealt with.
I think it will be 10-12 days before this process is finished.
The the car will return to Zuffenhaus where Keith and Aaron will put it back together. I'd say that it will take a 3 weeks for that.

So we are talking mid-end of Semptember. And yes I am really excited about the whole thing.

The car at this point will still have the 3.6 V-ram in it. I will then drive it up to Instant-G where they'll swap the 3.6 with the 3.9 and tune it.

We did not make the '88 into a '74. I bought a '74 tub. It is illegal here to tamper with the VIN numbers. Anyway there is no difference at all between a '74 and an '88 here in North Carolina as both are emission exempted as pre OBDII cars.

The move to Europe is all up in the air. We will certainly be here for another 18 months. We'll eventually move to England.. but we love NC and it is going to be a tough decision.
