I think it is pretty damn fast. The only thing I've been in faster was a turbo car with some juice over stock. My car is about 2200 lbs and I have over 300 hp thanks to Mr. Schmidts work on my engine. She is not even broken in yet (3300 miles) as I've been busy with interior work. When I took her out last time, I was not careful enough with the throttle and she literally jumped sideways.

speedracer,

Yes, you do NEED one.

That's what I said about 2 months ago.... and low and behold....... It was delivered here last week!

Just waiting for the snow and ice to melt.

here is the thing that those who are looking at this project need to keep in mind, it is very costly to do 'right'. It is not just the engine and the conversion parts. But you also have the brakes and other systems that really require upgrading to get the control over the new power. I have been focused on my interior but have been avoiding driving my car a lot because it needs more brakes. That is why I just got 996 TT brakes for her! See, there is the point, more money spent!

Cost is a big issue. Be prepared....It can be a slippery slope and expensive even if you do the work yourself. Here are some VERY ROUND #s, though, that aren't far from reality.

$13k to $18k for the engine and exhaust, conversion kit (flywheel, clutch, wiring harness), tins, heat solution. $3k to install and convert (shop labor).
$2k for good, used factory LSD and installation. +$1k additional for GUARD unit.
$2500 for brake upgrade + $1k labor.
$2k to $10k for chassis / suspension upgrades.
$1k to 2k for oil cooling parts + $1k labor for installation.

Unless you're tracking your car, I'd respectfully disagree. Or, if you are needing to routinely pull it down quickly from 140 mph on the street. But, for normal street use, I don't care if you have 1000 hp, stopping quickly from 60 or 70 mph is exactly the same regardless of the engine sitting behind you. Now, if you've added 1000 lbs to the car, it's a different story, but I don't think you did that!

The 993 or 964 engines shouldn't add much weight, if any. I suspect the 993 w/ the plastic intake may be lighter than 3.2s? Close, nonetheles.

The cooling upgrades are definitely a necessity, unless you decide to run it in fall, winter, spring only.

I'll have to agree with Chocaholic, but add that the note that it could be the new 3.6 transplant would "suggest" to the new owner to push it hard more often, where brake fade also comes into play. Upgrade brake pads, fluid, venting, then if run out of brakes, do the corresponding upgrade.

I plan to track the car, but I have to say, y'all can think what you want, a brake upgrade is just plain smart and I wouldn't encourage people to do this project without that step. You can do it, but I wouldn't recommend it.

this is what I am doing with brakes

I agree with Doug's numbers... but it might be more.

WOW!
That's a pretty good deal for the brakes! $2895. For new, including everything, I think that is a great price.

Save Money, Buy Mine

Thinking about selling my:
Low mile '97 Vram installed using Timmon's kit, motronic remapped by tuners in Deutchland. 22/29 hollow torsion bars, new biltsteins & polybronze on on all four corners, dual oil coolers with fan, elephant racing lines and fittings, 930 turbo brakes from Rennsport, rebuilt 915 with internal spraybar, circulation pump and cooler, wevo intermediate plate and Quaife torque bias diff. Only problem is that I put all this in an '86 Targa. Various other speed doodads. Shoulda gone for the coupe. I've never owned a coupe so I can't tell the difference at the track. The car is very fast. Handles great. Great fun in full drift coming out of long sweepers onto the straight aways.

Thinking about going flying. Need cash for airplane. My next DE event could change my mind though. This car is a blast on the street or track.

Mike

though no 3.6L, my 3.5L made 278 at the rear wheels, weighs in around 2300lbs with the stock 915 gearing its a monster.

toss in new bushings, blisten sports, weight loss and tires to handle the power and its fun.

right now my only brake upgrade it a switch to cross drilled and vented rotors with oversized pads (well bigger then stock so they actually sweet the entire disk)... and i've even tracked my car....stock brakes can lock up the tires....and they can stop faster then you should ever be stopping on the street..... however i do like the idea/safety factor that comes with bigger brakes.

i believe unless your talking BIG MONEY, the 3.6L transplant is the be all and end all.
