I do like Tony Adamawicz's 911S but for a 911R or 911ST I just think Fuchs are my choice:

Not w/ torq thrusts. Looks cool w/ minilites and flares, though. FWIW, I think torque thrusts are butt ugly, so that skews my opinion a bit (apologies to lars and dave conklin) .

Eye candy

If anyone needs an outstanding plater in California...I have a referral. I pieced these together, fit them and sent them off to get chromed. They came back today...
Gas cap and "mini me " cap

very nice

I am having issues with the 2.7 engine "required rebuild" I am leaning towards a 2.5 short stroke. My P and Cs may be too worn for a stock rebuild. Depends what I have vs what I need...unfortunately I already reprofiled my 2.7S cams to SC specs.

Wow Lars, the caps turned out great, those are going to look very nice against your color selection!

car is painted and curing

Painter is out of town for ten days, then I will be away for a few days. So, I have some time to get the reassembly organized. The 2.7 mule has turned into a fiasco. I took the case to the same shop that was doing my valve job, and checking my crank and rods and rockers. They were going to clean the case by putting it and the chain housings in their parts washer. Somebody in the shop instead put the case in an acid bath that they use to clean steel engine blocks. As the case was magnesium, basically the acid accelerated a weird sort of decomposition. Pretty gross...all the bearing surfaces are toast as is the mating points on the case halves, spigots etc. I will post pics , but it is pretty disappointing. the case looks like it is rotting with white blotches everywhere. The owner of the shop claimed that the case looked like that before he put it in his detergent washer. So, I am out a perfectly good 7R case. I have not seen the chain housings or covers yet. I hope that they did not suffer the same feat. Fortunately, I have an extra 7R case wich is being checked out now. The destroyed case had timeserts installed as well, and the backup case did not, so I'm going to by the tools and do the timeserts myself. Today, more prep work and assembly organization.

Darn, sorry to hear that. Mistakes happen, but that was a big one on their part. Maybe if you show him you earlier photographs to prove what it looked like before his acid bath, he could compensate you. I would have a hard time accepting this.

So the owners position is that the acid bath wouldn't hurt the bearings or the case? That should be easily confirmed.

Lars,

But don't you have some photos of the case (engine?) before you took it in?

(Ooops, I see that question was already posted)...

Yeah I'm sure this thread pretty much proves your case.

water under the bridge...

I gave him the chance...to come clean. And, as I normally don't take pics of my parts before I take them somewhere for work...I don't have "before" pics. What goes around...comes around. Bad part is I have used the guy before for machine work and the results have been very good. He was supposed to just clean the case for me...with some other parts. Hey, times are tight and he is a small shop. He could have had an employee do the cleaning and he wasn't the wiser to what happened.
I have enough things to do vs stress about a worn out chunk of magnesium. I am however now in the market for a small spigot 7R case that is not ...rotting. And while you are at it, a 66mm non counterweighted crank...std/std.

I hate these type of things. My own project had multiple incidents of this nature and I should have done a better job at holding accountable the shop.

Sometimes we just don't get it....

This is not a disease...this is just an obsession with good intent. We are carrying on a tradition, and improving on 40 year old technology. In addition, we are putting $$ back into the economy...which has got to help. The old saying..." a fool and his money are soon parted" should be amended to..." a Porschefile will part with his hard earned $$ not simply to better his own lot...but for the betterment of all mankind". Which is what I did...I just bought another complete 1966 complete car which I will bring home tomorrow...too cheap to pass up. If the rust is anywhere close to the rust on "Axel", I will strip and part. If it is less, I will evaluate. I bought the complete car as a parts car, so my expectations are VERY low. Key to the car is that it was complete...which the 1966 car from Craig I started with was not. I'll post the good and the bad when it arrives tomorrow. There is already a strong push from the younger side of the family for a SWB racecar....gotta love that

The bad news...

Is that the car is not so bad. I picked it up tonight and while it ends up being a 1968 vs a 1966, the floor has some issues, but the front suspension pan isvery good and the rockers almost acceptable. Surface problems...with oxcidation, but unfortunately pretty solid. Which means that I can't just strip it and junk the shell. I had hoped for the later as then I wouldn't have to worry about a space for it, and also wouldn't have to fire up the welder and deal with restoration design again.
The good news is that the interior door panels are nice as are the seats, and there is a really nice hockey puck in the steering wheel. Wheels are weird (VW?) but I did get yet another 901 with AFMSX. It came with a clear title and keys...which is more than I started with when I began with the 1966 car from Craig Colorado. I will drain the oil and give the battery a fresh charge and clean (expensive )gas to see if we can't get it fired up. I'll take a good look at the pan in daylight and see what the problem areas are...maybe a keeper. I was going to take a break after the SWB clone.
Pics tomorrow...

The guy doing the PPI should not be drinking beer

And that guy would be me...I think it was the darkness, not the beer. Front suspension pan was bad repair, floors need to be replaced, seat buckets also, inner rockers, and rear shelf seems solid. Very do-able, but not now. I will finish Axel and start to take the 68 apart. Exceptional bumpers, fenders and trim...which will go away. Seats and rubber mats nice too.
