3.6 conversion and upgrades started

Hello, i have bought a 96 varioram engine, installing it into a 74 chassie.

Have a couple of quotes out on conversion parts, Patrickmotorsports and Instant-g.

Where do i start, taken of powersteer pump, air filter and some engine tin.

The Ferraries will only smell my exhaust this summer..hehe

The ecu is now reprogrammed, driveblock removed, only one exhaust sensor and a couple of ponnies extra...

I have all the parts now. only things missing is fuel, oil lines and exhaust, but i have that sorted out....

Made my own cam block of plates, and i am also going to make spacers for engine mount, special design so i dont have to bend the original mounting bracket.

Still not finished with the paint job, so i wont start installing before end of the month.

My plan is to begin with the fuel lines and harness.

I am no car mecanic, but have been servecing\installing CNC mashines for a couple of years.

Advice needed

do a search you should find a lot.

where to start depends on your budget. I have used instant-G and patrick, both are good for different things. I think you can get better support from Instant-G because they are smaller and because Timmons is a good guy who is really into the hobby as much as he is into making money with his business.

Patrick makes a first class product, if you want perfect finish quality go with them, but they don't let the stuff they sell go cheap, so be ready for that.

Regardless the result will be a fun car you can enjoy. Good luck and feel free to send me a note if you need help. You can find more about my car and project by searching for 'scruffy'.

Thank you.

I have been reading about this conversion for 6 months now, more hours reading than the practical part of the job..

Since i work with turning and milling myself i bought the important stuff from Patrick, nice parts, as you say, costly... but worth it...

I know Timmins is a good guy, but our emails got mixed up when i asked for quote, so i had to start buying stuff from other suppliers, have been on his page for hours When we made contact i asked if he would sell me his tech info, but no, he would only sell the whole package...

I have the PMS harness, flywheel and throttle cable. And ALOT of other parts....
New adjustable shox, hollow torsion bars 23\31, paint job+++ , RS 3.8 wing, 965 rockers, Yellowbird front\rear bumpers, new bushings all over, camber plates, ALL carpets\hoodliner, fixed the dash pad myself
Rebiult my transmission ALL bearings new... Rennspeed pedals++++++

I still have alot of work to do before i can start installing the engine..

posting Timmon's emails to you is really not going to help the situation with him. Rec'd you edit that and remove his email.

with respect to dealing with Steve, I rec'd further that you appreciate where he is coming from, he is a one man show and frankly was in this 3.6 cov business before everyone else. Since then he has witnessed a lot of people take what he did and replicate it, can't blame him for having a bit of a sensitivity toward that.

True though, he can be short with customers some times. He was with me also.

If you think you can make your own conversion then I think you should just go for it.

Advice taken...

I thought another company was known for PMS... hehe... Everybody can have a bad day If people sell "his product" its totally understandable....

I think i have control of everything, just need confirmation that the stuff i do is right when i begin. Still weeks away from starting installation.

I love my hobby ( lifestyle..hehe ) and put to much money in to building a car the way i want it, love to learn new stuff, and love to share my experience.
I have made a detailed thread on the Norwegian forum on 915 transmission rebuild to help others...

Track day on sunday, no car, so i will be the hot dog guy

Prepping the engine and doing some suspension work...

Is this correct, remove smog pump . new line from the removed smog pump to vacuum cannister, block vacuum line from heater flap. Remove valves for heater and smog vacum lines?

Connected vacuum cannister to where the heater control vacuum line went, block on connection piece where the smog vac. went.

I made a fan block plate in aluminium, glass blasted it and drilled a 8.5 mm hole for the dizzy vent hose.

3.6 v.ram conversion + modify rest of the car

Now its almost one year since my last post here.... Almost finished all of the upgrades on the car. Suspension, brakes, bodywork and transmission.

The plan is to get the engine in next week.

During the last year i have moved my project to another location, took up too much space at home.

Finally start to see how everything will look like when its finished.

Also having big plans for the transmission side-cover, bught a piece of titanium and made a 3d model in SolidEdge, hopefully i will find some time to produce it in the cnc mill this summer, WHEN the car is finished.

Have you got a close-up pic of your flywheel sensor? I'm curious how close it was to meeting the factory spec, when installed with the new flywheel. Did you have to modify the bracket?

I just drilled the hole closest to the flywhheel bigger, hand grinded the plastic on the sensor a little bit to get it closer without rubbing on the flywheel. Without the mod. the distance from the sensor to flywheel was about 2-2.5mm, if i remember correct. I was carefull not to make the hole to big, if the bolt gets loose, the sensor will not hit the flywheel

Thanx for the comments on the pics The best ones i have ever taken of any car.

Very cool project! As a side note, that "RUF" front bumper looks great on that slant nose

Thank you for the reply. I was considering whether or not to make my own bracket in order to adjust the clearance.

It's ALIVE

It starts, finally. Had a bad batterie, baught a new one, but even then it wouldnt crank good enough to fire up, just idle for 2 sec, then died.....

Charged the new batterie overnight, and, it fired up nice....

Still idle problems, low, 500-600rpms, dies when i go of the throttle when i am revving it.

Diagnostic say misfire on syl- 1-4 and 5, so i guess i have to check the sparkplugwiring, i probably connected them wrong, it is one of those easy things i never learn or understand

Can also be vacuum system. I run it without the exhaust sensors, one is chrushed, so this can also give me idle problems.

But... IT WORKS

Its nice to follow these upgrade projects on Pelican. Im glad that you got yours running.

I just bought my engine (1997) on thursday, anfd now im thinking about ordering the modification kit from Timmins.

At this point, if I may "steal" your thread", I have one question:
What are the 2 connections in engine wiring harness for? I only have the the engine to ecu harness, and it doesnt include anything for these two:

Those look like the heater fan leads, and I'd do some research on Timmins before spending money. There are options for the necessary parts.

The 14-pin connector goes to the old harness, there is only one pin to change, i found out when i used amperemeter to check ALL the wiring, reading connection pin by pin, one side to the other.

Patrick harness came with easy instructions, installed in 1 hour... Pms has diagnostic port as well, forgot to say that when i answered your pm.

Good luck, if you have more questions, fire away

My engine is running, the sound is just fantastic Paint in june, maybe finished in end of august
