Is there a shorter spark plug tool?

After reading all the posts on sparkplug removal methods, I ordered the wrench from the toolkit (no toolkit with the car) from a reputable salvage yard. However, despite many attempts, it's just too long for me to maneuver. I resorted to articulated sockets, locking extensions, and hoses (Pelican posts are extremely helpful!). Took a while, but once I got the "feel", what started as a chore became fun.

However, now I've got this wonderful tool that I can't use....see pictures...were they all this long? It's missing the knurled tip that others spoke of in previous posts....could it be aftermarket (says "Klein", which I thought was factory...) Or is it just me....curious. Watch for it in the for sale forum....

There is a shorter version of that tool. It's less than half the length of yours but otherwise very similar.

That tool looks like the one for a 912 maybe? Definitely way too long for a 911. Contact the salvage yard and see if they'll exchange it for the correct tool.

That sure isn't a 911 tool, more like a 944?

Mine looks just like Bill V's. It is a great tool to have. Even at it's shorter length, there was a plug or two that took some maneuvering to extract while attached to the tool - there's no way you could get to any of the plugs with the tool in you photo!

This is the tool that came with the later 911's, I know at least 77 and newer. The shaft flex's to make it easy to remove/install in the tight area's of the 911.

The "fixed" shaft tool of Bill V's came with the early cars.

I have no idea where the tool you got came from, but it was not a 911. Possibly, as stated above, a 356 or 912...

John,

Yours is definitely one from a 944. The "flexible" 911 tool (as shown in timc's) post works well for the later cars (84-) & turbos but the earlier "fixed" is the best one I have ever used on the earlier cars. The fixed one really gives you a lot of feel which really helps when it comes to avoiding cross threading the plugs.

This one is definitely the best. I only wish that they had designed it to attach directly to a 3/8 ratchet instead of using a 10mm hex.

not that hard to weld a 3/8 end on one. 5 5/8" is the magic length. been using this one for many years.

I agree. However, mine needs a new rubber sleeve that holds the spark plug in place. I didn't see it in the Pelican parts store. I assume the dealer can still get this? Any rubber sleeve replacement options outside of this?

Recognition of two suppliers...

Contacted the salvage yard that originally supplied me the wrong tool (top of photo). Sent pictures from the responses I received on Pelican...this forum is TERRIFIC. After much searching, they located the correct sized tool (bottom of photo). No charge replacement; this after a year of my first receiving tool. dc Automotive...very responsive and honorable! Thank you to all.
