Here is the all rubber tail that was on my car. It weighed a ton. It was so heavy it produced downforce without the wing.

Anyone ever seen one of these actually installed on a 1977 MY - 80 MY .....West German market only sold 911 model ? (Not ROW, but West German ONLY market) .

Apparently (according the the PET catalogs) , they are an original install piece on whaletails (early fiberglass only ? maybe all poly also ?) .... OR normal decklids on those model years. For that market ONLY. I've vever seen one before , until I got it with an early fiberglass whaletail (not attached) .

It's description in parts catalogs is : "airduct" / "Luftführung" ( translation : airguide ).

Anyone own bone stock 1977 - 1980 911 that was originally sold in in West Germany ....to stay there ?

Interesting.

I have not seen one of those in over 20 years. It seems to be in relatively perfect condition. Most of those shriveled up turned whitish and looked like crap after a number of years . It never looked correct on the car IMO.

I do recall seeing them installed on newly delivered SC's in the late 70's. I never knew if it was an aftermarket part installed by dealerships on new cars or not. One person told me it was a factory part but there is no crest under the wing, would be interesting to find out.

I would be curious to know what visible markings exist. It would make it easy if there a crest or part number existed. I could be wrong but it might have some collector appeal factory or not.

I'm sure if you had done a search on this forum for "rubber whaletail" (& probably an internet search in general if you added "porsche") , you would have had your question answered.

But ..... as far as if factory or not .... 911.512.019.02

There are no markings on it or a part#.
There is a bit of rust by the mounting studs on the bottom.

RatBox,I have one of those pieces around here somewhere. I have had it over 20 years but wasn't sure it came on a tail.

Hi kyguy 935,

I just thought i'd see what was out there in the real world. As I stated prior , interestingly , the PET parts catalog shows that piece as coming originally BOTH on 1977 Carrera 3.0's . AND normal 911's ... 1977 thru 1980 MY (that would be 1977 911S models & 1978 - 80 911sc's). So that means underneeth grills on standard decklids and early fiberglass whaletails (I don't think the rubber bolt on tails as my suspicion is that these were not used on German market cars).

But ONLY West German market cars (there is a specific notation of this).

If I knew of a german porsche forum . I would ask there , but I don't.

It seems like an interersting piece . And from looking at it (and the name) , it directs air. So there has to be some kind of benefit.

But again , apparently this is not a whaletail only piece. And remember that even on 1977 Carrera 3.0's , I believe the bulk of these cars were produced without the front & rear spoilers option (M473) anyway.

I've had a German Market 1979 911SC before , but it did not have it's original decklid/grill.

I remember seeing one of the all rubber tails on a 1977 new car. It was a US narrow body car.

The poly-urethane tails, 911.512.019.02, were used from at least '76. The dealers loved them because they could be added(along w/ the p/u front chins) at the dealership w/o painting anything. You are correct that they were very heavy @ ~20#s + ~9#s for the steel lid, though not as heavy as a 930 tea tray @ ~23# + lid

1007 is the base
1900 is the p/u lip

Well thanks for the info but I had really no interest whether it was or not until it was posted. So I figured i would ask since this is a forum about tails it should be defined as factory or not. Bill put it all in perspective.

Thanks for the link to your post #44
That is a new one for me: All street production tails that we have ever seen were metal based (either alloy or steel)

That red tail appears to have the correct german weave rough fiberglass, so if made aftermarket, it was done really well. Part numbers were faithfully copied using original parts for plugs, but looks like you have something unusual and factory made there

Goes to show you can always learn something new

+1 vote for metal base.

It does look superb, though.

Drive it through Stuttgart, if you spot a bunch of angry German engineers in white lab gowns chasing ya, then its probably a fake.

Whaletail sourced for my 3.0 911 Turbo (930), 1976. Metal framed whaletail (p/n 930 512 010 01) with all original AC parts.

I have a 1977 Carrera 3.0 Targa and a few years ago I bought a tail for it. I am going to be restoring the '77 starting late next year and figured I'd put this on it as an option to the standard deck lid it originally came with. From what I can tell it seems to be the correct tail (albeit a twin grill version) and the rubber lip is still in good shape. I cannot find any part numbers on it at all. Do I have an aftermarket version?

Thanks!

Have you tried looking where I have circled? I have one of those tails as well (in addition to the one in post 74 above) and the number is in the same location on both - on the centre support for the closing latch.

Thanks! I just scraped the paint off that support and no part number. I'm guessing aftermarket from a long time ago. I'm not concerned, it is in good shape and the rubber lip looks almost new.

BTW, Any place to get the small grill or should I modify a regular grill to fit that space?

Mine is also missing the small grill - there was a modified metal grid piece in it when I got it. I haven't tried to source the correct one for it to be honest as the correct tail (larger second grill) is complete, so fitting that one. I am guessing its likely to be tricky to source one, I dont know if they are available anymore so modifying a larger one might be an option - although it will have the slight curve on it...

Porsche Spoiler, rear (803-10)

No dimensions given so might be worth a call....

Good find on the grill part. When it is time for me to do my restoration I'll give them a call and confirm which one to get.

Thanks!
