I use a locally available oil, Agrol Super Syntet 5W-40. It's a SHPD-oil with all the right additives. I believe that synthetics are superior in many ways and I want as good lubrication as possible when the engine is cold, hence a 5W oil.

Any brand off the shelf 10w30.

Why? Best lubrication at cold start where most wear occurs and cooler operation due to less internal friction, eliminating the need for anything more than a stock fender mounted trombone oil cooler.

Cheers,

Joe

I know, I know not another oil thread but I was just curious as to who uses what brands. I am not looking at changing what I use or anything of that nature. I don't want to know who thinks what brand is best, I was just curious as to who uses what. I happen to use Mobil 1 in my 86.

No Mobil V-twin 20-50 users out there. Thought this was a full syn designed for air cooled engines with lots of zinc. A bit pricey though

Mobile 1 15-50.
I use it on both my Supercharged 997S and my '97 911. I buy it in the 5 qt jugs at WalMart when it's on sale.

Cliff Notes for Oil Selection

Cliff notes version:

Older engines (pre-mid 90's) need high levels (around 1200 ppm plus correct level of detergents) of Zinc (Zn) and Phosphorus (P) to protect cams and other high pressure surfaces.

With the introduction of roller tappets in most engines by the mid-90's, this requirement is relaxed and Zn and P levels can be reduced. The EPA pressured API to reduce the Zn and P levels to (hopefully) extend the life of the catalytic converter which is poisoned by Zn and P. They complied.

Use 20W-50 or 15W-40 oil. Brands frequently sugggested here, in no particular order, include:

Brad Penn 20W-50
Valvoline VR-1 20W-50
Kendall GT 20W-50
SWEPCO 15W-40
Royal Purple

There are others as well.

I had emailed shell about their oil and Zn and P content, received an email next day from them saying it is rated at or above 1200ppm. Ive been using Shell Rotella T 15w-40 basically since i acquired the car(10w-40 when it gets damn cold in NE). no problems yet, oil change intervals of 3-4k miles. cost is around $2.50 a quart.

Brad Penn 20W-50 because people I trust use it...the threads seem to indicate it works well and it is relatively cheap for me.

Swepco 306 15W-40 also seems to work accoording to the experts, a little more pricey for me. If changing oil hyperfrequently I don't think it really matters, as long as it is heavy.
